White Sox's Mark Buehrle joked about no-hitter, Ozzie Guillen sad for Arizona's Melvin

By Mark Gonzales

Mark Buehrle retired the first 19 batters but knows how hard it is to complete a no-hitter.

"I felt capable of maybe getting there, but obviously I know how hard it is to go do that," Buehrle said after allowing one hit in eight innings of the White Sox's 6-0 win over Detroit. "The changeup was the best changeup I had in a couple of years. Obviously everything was working, the velocity was up there, changing speeds, physically, yeah, I felt pretty good.’’

Buehrle joked with coach Jeff Cox about a no-hitter from the first inning until Placido Polanco hit a double with one out in the seventh.

"(Cox) came out and said, ‘hey, let’s get some more runs, this guy is pitching his butt off,' and I said, ‘and I got a no-hitter.’ I did it for the first six innings, but they just showed the one in the sixth inning (on TV) and made it look like I jinxed myself.’’

Buehrle received an extra day of rest because of Wednesday's rainout. After the Sox arrived from Kansas City, Buehrle didn't arrive at his home until 3 a.m., and then was awoken by two-month daughter Booklyn 2 1/2 hours later.

“I didn’t get much sleep a few nights ago, but I don’t think that would have mattered,’’ Buehrle said.

Buehrle compared Thursday's game to his no-hitter against Texas on April 18, 2007.

“I don’t know how good my changeup was that night, but I think I threw a majority of changeups tonight," Buehrle said. "It was one of those pitches that was just working for me.’’

Buehrle was supported by Jayson Nix, who played exceptionally well in his first start at shortstop and hit his first major league home run while starter Alexei Ramirez was benched.

"That's how it is in this game. When you get your opportunity, you have to make the most out of it and just create more opportunities for yourself," Nix said. "Not a lot of thought goes into a situation like that. You approach the game the same way and try to go out each night and help the team win and do whatever you can."

Unfortunately, there was some sadness in the Sox's clubhouse over the firing of Arizona manager Bob Melvin. Manager Ozzie Guillen and Melvin had a strong relationship during the years the Sox and Diamondbacks shared Tucson Electric Park and scheduled B games to get extra work for their players.

Melvin, 47, who managed the Diamondbacks for just over four seasons, became the fall guy for an offense that batted only .225. Mark Reynolds has a team-high 36 strikeouts. Chris Young, whom the Sox traded in the Javier Vazquez, is batting .177 with 31 strikeouts.

And Eric Byrnes, in the middle of a three-year, $30 million contract, is batting .139. Thanks to Byrnes' contract, the Diamondbacks made Carlos Quentin expendable.

Mark would be the perfect poster here. And half the poeple would call him a moron and tell him he knows nothing about baseball. :aussie: :lolhitting

On a related note, when MB was on B&B he said he would throw at the Ranger's players when his guys were getting hit. After hanging up, B&B proclaimed that he was wrong to want to throw at people. Nothing like radio hosts telling a really good pitcher how to play the game.
