The other night I saw the Kannapolis club take a double-header at Hagerstown. In game 2, their DH was Kenny Williams. Does anyone know if he is related to the Sox' GM? (This Williams went 0 for 3, striking out each time.)

Oh wow, I could never find his stats on B-R cuz I was looking under Kenny Williams, he's actually under Kenneth Williams. I was thinking there may have been some truth to what KW Sr. was saying last year about scouts being impressed by KW Jr. Not so much. He blows. Hard.

As stated earlier, he is KW's son. He was drafted in the 6th round of the 2008 draft. Many (read: most everyone) saw this as an insane overdraft of the GM's son, who many scouts said was a late rounder at best, and wasn't even on the board for some teams. It was a little embarrassing, as a Sox fan, to see that. But the Sox claimed he'd surprise some people, and that they didn't see it as an overdraft.

 

He did have an injury (as noted earlier also), which may be having an effect. But the reality is, he was terrible in a short stint at Great Falls (rookie) last year, and has been pretty bad at Low A Kananpolis this year while DH'ing most of the time (KW's value was said to be in his athleticism, he isn't a power hitter).

Exactly. Taking him in the 55th round, fine. Heck, given the pedigree, one could even argue they are more likely tham similar players to succeed anyway. But 6th round? Seriously?

 

I seen him play in a game on the back fields in spring training this year. He was smashing the ball and was the most impressive hitter in that game. His dad was watching him play that game FWIW.

I'm not ready to make a judgement on him until he's 100% healthy.

Jordan Danks was projected as a finer prospect than Kenny Williams Jr. a guy who didn't even start most of the time in college and pretty much flunked out. For a team that watches its resources as closely as the White Sox, this was a ridiculous move. There was a 99 % chance he was nothing, and a guy with the exact same history with the exact same skill set and potential named something other than Williams wouldn't have received anything near $150k. If they want to draft all their kids, thats fine by me, but don't waste resources on reaches.

If you wanna go real deep, you can say he's a bad father for spoiling his child instead of encouraging him to earn his way in the world. Or, he told him that if he played four years of college ball, he'd pay him 150K and let him play minor league ball. At least Oney "retired."

Thanks for the responses. I did find the Intimidators' website and did find out that the Williams' are father and son. I also saw where in the next game, Jr. had a 3 for 4 outing. But he is still hitting about .235.

 

It is hard to make judgements at this level. A few years ago, the Sox had their high A Carolina League team playing in Woodbridge, VA, about a half hour drive from where I work. During those two years, the team had hitters hitting over .300, and was one of the top 2 or 3 teams in the league. But only two players from those teams made it to the majors. One was Mags Ordonez, who at the high A level also hit around .235, as I recall. I hardly noticed him while he was here.
