This article from a few weeks ago covers in more depth the lawsuit against a McDonald's franchise that was mentioned in the NYT piece

http://inthesetimes.com/working/entry/1517...ll_debit_cards/

Another article on AOL that has a quote that highlights the reason more employers are doing this:

http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2013/06/27/pa...ds-hidden-fees/

“As Benson explained: “Our paycard is designed to be completely free to the employer, and virtually free for the employee.”
It's shifting the cost of payroll administration onto employees.

  • .....we could do a stimulus at the federal level where the federal government spends money....

  • What are you even talking about? The Federal debt did blow up under Obama?  EDIT: Before you respond with your partisan stuff, it blew up under Bush too and will continue to blow up under Trump.

I thought the law was that to be enrolled in any form of payment besides check/cash requires the authorization from the employee to do so.

I can still see where employers are pushing these forms of payment onto their employees and trying to take advantage of them, but they would still have to accept it first before legally having to do it.

The NASDAQ is under a full trading halt.

Down two hours now, and counting.

No one has really said. It is kind of bizarre actually. They said they were having some sort of problem disseminating and sending stock quotes, but no real detail on why.

They are now planning on opening at :45 after. The post-mortum will be interesting.

Make that 2:25 Central time now

There was some real weird stuff going on this morning. Lots and lots of stuck orders and weird prints.

Sounds like there were other oddities going on in Amex stuff earlier too.

Back open after about 3 hours.

What's going to happen with the current government shutdown threats? Sounds like it will happen this time. I read "catastrophic consequences."

I'm also pissed off in reading our Kansas legislature is one of the states that won't allow Obamacare to do its thing, won't allow the increase to Medicare or something.

I can't believe how government doesn't work any more. The Repubs simply won't work with Obama and he has never been able to figure out what to do about it.

I wish all people would vote and we could clean house of all these bastards.

Not how it works. This is how it works.

10% approval rating of congress.

90% of congress will win reelection.

Because of reasons.

I'm supporting a family of four on a government income. Shutdown would be catastrophic for me.

I giggle with anticipation of all these government workers actually having to get a real job without some criminal union protecting their incompetence. Welcome to the real world guys! You may have to work once and a while.

are you really a person? i'm honestly just baffled.

do you enjoy driving on roads? because without govt workers, you wouldn't have any.

people like you confuse the hell out of me

I drive 11 hours a day. And yes I do enjoy it.

That said the entire maintenance of our roads is a crooked scheme of lazy workers and graft to the naked eye. They don't bother hiding it.

The vast majority of government workers aren't unionized. I think all that incompetence you've been staring at is actually a mirror.

If I were incompetent I'd be fired.

I didn't mean at your job--I meant here.

They don't have pensions and are not nearly paid as well as their government counterpart.

Federal or state? Because the Federal retirement plan is very similar to many large companies, and we haven't gotten a raise in over 3 years.

Who do you work for? How many times have you rec'd speeding tickets? Have you ever fallen asleep at the wheel? Do you ever do any extreme driving like those drivers on ice on TV? Give us some stories, please.

I drive for a small-ish OTR carrier based in Oregon driving the lower 48. I won't say which because Reddy will email them.

I've never fallen asleep, never been pulled over and have passed inspections at Banning, Cottonwood and this one scale in NJ which doesn't.have the reputation of the first two but is absolutely insane. I drive legal. If some drunk kills himself by driving into my tandems I go to jail if I'm not legal. I'm not about to risk it.

Craziest story I have is when the convoy I was in got hit by a massive storm outside Vegas and the lead truck (who was dead heading) got picked up and thrown on its side. I was loaded to 78.5k lbs and the initial burst of wind pushed me all the way onto the shoulder. It was a rush.
