How do I know I won't be doing video processing on my PC in 1 or 2 years? How do I know I won't be doing CAD or SolidWorks in the future? How do I know I won't be playing intense games in the future? I don't want to have to buy something new just for these things in the future. I'd rather invest in something better right now. Anyways, my initial post was about how bad the iPad Mini and Nexus 7 comparison was. Apple decided to say bigger screen = better, even though it had a lower resolution and both screens pretty much showed the same thing.

Here Grandma and Grandpa, I know you need to surf the net and write emails to your grandkids but just in case you want to run a Hadoop cluster in your house you should buy this silly balls to the wall hardware that you probably are never going to use in the first place. You look at major operating system releases as the cornerstone of how to size most consumer environments. What is the recommended hardware ( not minimum ) + whatever main line office they are running and bump it a bit. What is the nature of how I am going to primarily use the device. Sure you dont know what your requirements are going to be, but in reality most consumers are not going to start changing their processing requirements. Gamers and other high end users usually police themselves and select hardware already based on their requirements and then some. I remember sitting in a DC with Compaq Proliant 7ks years ago. They were 4 way boxes and had a silly amount of RAM. The application however ran like a pig. So when we took a look we saw only one of the processors being pegged. It was a small section of 16 bit code that was in this 32bit software package. It couldnt run at the time on an SMP box. So in the end, buying all of that hardware did us bunk, when we needed to have the manufacturer fix their crappy software. its more of the same today. There are some well written apps that run just fine on hardware. There are some crappy apps that run crappy no matter what OS or hardware you throw it on. Some of these apps attempt to point at hardware as a solution to fix their bad programming processes. In the end for the normal consumer you make a decent selection at the time based on standards and you should be good. Edited October 24, 201213 yr by southsideirish71

There is a known wifi bug in ios 6, slated to be fixed in ios 6.0.1. That said, the wifi bug is a pretty major oversight, because they changed something from 5 to 6 in the wifi code base, as devices that were working fine started having similar issues after updating. IMO, Apple has started making some major rush to market gaffes as of late, whether this has to do with new leadership or not I have no idea. Wasn't a fan of the minor spec bump of the iPad or the iPad mini running on 2 year old hardware. New higher-end Windows 8 laptops have touch screens. Some of them are convertible. So tablet and notebook in one. I'd much rather get that than pay extra for the MS Surface. I got my $1300 laptop for $900 through Dell's student discount.

Based upon my initial impressions of Windows 8, I'd want something with a touch screen. It just seems so much more slick using swipes than a mouse. I'm waiting for a tablet/laptop hybrid that comes with Windows 8 and runs on the AMD Hondo chip or Intel's clover trail chip. My initial reading on them say that the tablet alone on those will get 10+ hours of battery life. A lot of these are also set up to allow the keyboard charge up the tablet when you attach it, which could extend the battery life another 3-5 hours. Edited October 31, 201213 yr by vandy125
October 31, 201213 yr For this laptop Id probably not care about touch screen. That would be something that Id consider if I was going to get a laptop/tablet to bring around. This one is just for moving around my house and being able to play games watch things, which is why Im leaning towards the 17 inch screen and the 1080p model.
October 31, 201213 yr Well I got it. For what I want it seems perfect, I know it may be slightly bulky not amazingly pretty, but I want function over style. The specs should be good enough for what I want to do, I cant see myself being involved in mmorpg guild raids in the future, but who knows.
