Probably not. A crapped out drive is a crapped out drive.

I think it's time for you to get an SSD. A good SSD has a much lower rate of failure (at least before it degrades after it reaches its writes limit). Not to mention the performance boost you'll get.

That's probably a whole bunch of upgrades for him, not to mention SSD's aren't cheap. I highly doubt his motherboard even supports them, unless he has a pretty new computer on his hands.

His computer doesn't support SATA 2?

The computer is only about 18 months old. The drive is still under warranty from WD so I'm good there, I'm just looking for any way to get what data I can off the crap drive before I send it in for RMA

Without breaking the drive, if it won't mount, there isn't much you can do.

You can get a rather large/powerful magnet and hold it to the drive, that should damage any data on it pretty severely.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, when drives are RMA'd like that, there are pretty strict rules they're supposed to follow about it's disposal.

Up front maybe not...but with such a licensing agreement, there is certainly money to be made somewhere down the line. Otherwise, they wouldn't do it just for the sake of "it's cool".

It's a marketing trade off that benefits both parties.

I'm not worried about personal information. Really, the computer hasn't even been used all that much and all of my wife's school stuff was backed up already. But there's probably some stuff on there I'm not thinking of that I'd like to have.

Oh well, no big deal if I can't. Luckily all of our important information was on other drives.

And my statement stands.

At the moment, it may be simply "mutual", but believe me, in the contracts, there is plenty of room for "adding on" other advertising features they haven't mentioned yet, which will be a net gain for Google, and IMO, a net loss for all users of Google products that will now get hammered with Kit Kat ads.

This is a trial, and if it's the least bit successful, you can bet your ass the next "nexus" phone you want to buy looks like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup package. ;)

I already want to buy Kit Kats now...so it's worked.

Tried 4 more programs, none of them worked either. After 3 hours straight of this bulls***, I may have finally found a reason to end my misery. Obviously not the answer I wanted, but I guess I can just stop trying and remove my fist from the wall.

I put this command in, and was given back info saying......

Apparently it can't support a hosted network I guess? No idea why, but I guess that's pretty cool. No Chromecast or PS3 in my room for me. Also, I get to move my 90 pound TV up the stairs in to my bedroom now, to swap w/ the one that's in there. f***ing sweet, can't wait. I hate technology.

f*** all this, I just ordered a 50 foot ethernet cable. I'll just run another damn cable across the apartment and upstairs in to the bedroom, f*** it.

Doesn't your laptop have an HDMI out? Jesus.

Since I am moving, I'm ready to procure 2 new TV's.

Currently looking for a plasma for my basement (better picture in darker room) and probably an LED for my new family room (brighter room, wall mounted).

Anyone just go through a purchase? I read alot of review etc but love real world stories.

Heres another:

I believe Steve had reviewed the Directv genie. It looks like I will be going that route, anyone else use that service? Any restrictions or annoyances?

I've got the Genie and am very pleased with it.

As for your question about tv's, I've always gone with Panasonic for plasma and I bought a 70-inch Sharp Aquos LED for my main room. Have been very pleased with it generally, although even at 240 Hz, I notice a bit of trailing when I am watching certain sports, with golf being the worst offender.

Thanks Shack, I have been leaning Panny plasma as well with maybe a Samsung LED.

Good to hear on the genie. Any issues with multiple rooms etc? Whole-home DVR for some reason seems like it SHOULD have issues.

Well, sometimes not all of my programs that have been recorded on the various dvr's show up on the Genie, but this is rare. We moved and my dvr's were not hooked up for a few days, including a Sunday, when a lot of my shows record. So anyways, a few months later I go to start Mad Men, and I notice an episode is missing...I figure I missed it when we moved and so I go buy it on iTunes so I can watch it on Apple tv...next day I turn on the tv, and sure as s***, the episode is there...it was recorded on a different dvr somehow, and all the sudden reappeared in my playlist.

I personally can't stand 240hz on LEDs. Maybe it was just my friend's tv but everything looked way too fake, it puts so much emphasis on the "front" objects that even movies/shows that I thought were high quality started to look like cheaply made soap operas with how it engineered everything. But again, it was 1 tv and my friends didn't notice until I pointed it out.

The Soap Opera Effect

Just ordered directv and schedule my appt. Seems so cheap, I hope the fees dont increase at the rate that Comcast did. I get 5 TV's on DVR at no cost upfront.

I believe without reading your article that its actually 120 hz tv's with software smoothing which "acts" like 240

I really need to find someone to do something with Flapship. ANYONE with basic design skills to post these articles. I've got way too much work to do, but this site gets effortless hits, still, based on super old content. We're talking 4,000 hits per month with nothing new.

The new content was what always made it go bananas since it's an approved Google News source.

Oh, side projects.

No issues. Playback is a breeze. We had one wonky client that they replaced.

I ordered it for the day after I close on my house. I cannot believe how cheap it turned out to be with zero money up front. I already have a dish on the house and I am not sure which company it is for so i assume they can just use the existing wiring and replace the dish.
