Eh, I had a plasma in my upstairs living room that gets a decent amount of light and it sucked. There is more glare on a plasma and the viewing angles weren't as good (at least a year and a half or two years ago). If you're talking home theater TV I agree, but LED/LCD's are probably going to be a better bet if you're using it as an everyday TV in a room with light and/or odd angles.

The only exception would be certain light situations. But when it comes to best picture, plasma dominates the competition.

If you're replacing the 40 with a 40, i wouldn't buy anything fancy. Just about any "small" TV like that will have a good picture from a brand like Samsung.

No the 40 is currently upstairs, the main TV, and it's where I'd be placing the new 55". The 40 would go to the basement and the old CRT would go to the trash.

Well the TV would be near our front windows. Hmm.

I'll have to look into the Samsung, I was checking out their LED TVs and some Panasonic plasmas last night. I care about picture quality, not any of the smart TV stuff or 3D. I wish someone would make a high-end display with the extra stuff stripped out at a lower price-point.

I hoping Fry's has some plasmas on display that I can go and check out in person before deciding.

60" Plasma, NO smart features (use your AppleTV/Ruku/Chromecast to make it truly smart in comparison to the garbage "smart" tv's include).

Oh, it's only 797$.

And it's a really good tv.

Then just make sure your plasma gets good scores on how bright it can get.

55" would already be pushing what would work in this room. The floorplan is basically this, but mirrored, and the TV would go on the wall directly to the right of the words "Living Room". It would completely dominate the room, and not necessarily in a good way.

edit: I've already got a Roku LT and a nicer Panasonic Blu-Ray with hulu, netflix etc. which is why I don't need the "Smart TV" crap.

You cant go wrong with a 120 hz Samsung LED, however if you notice details of pictures and you configure your LED you will have judder and it will be something you have to adjust to.

Plasmas can have some screen glare at times in a bright room, but to me it was only a few hours a day with direct sunlight and most of my TV watching was at night. I have a 7-8 year old Samsung plasma and it still dominates my brand new LED's.

I just wish they made larger plasmas. I want an 80 in for my basement and the only options are LED's.

200 bucks cheaper than amazon, so you still save money even with taxes. Thats a deal to jump at right there.

If I can convince my wife that 59" really wouldn't be that big and her nature shows would look incredible on it...

Are you going to mount it or buy a stand?

I've got a 70 inch LED, a 55 inch plasma, and a 42 inch LED...I prefer the 55 inch plasma as far as picture quality. The 70 inch is beautiful, but our living room has a wall of glass facing the tv and so at certain times during the day, and at night when we have our outdoor lights on, there is definitely a bit of screen glare that I hate. We have automatic shades that we can lower that most address this, but it's still a pain. If the room is going to be getting any decent amount of natural light, I would go with plasma if I were you.

Did you mean LED in that last sentence? I thought screen glare was supposed to be worse with plasmas.

Ahh, you are correct. I guess I forgot which was better in the light...and made the right choice after all. :)

One of my plasmas has windows to the left of it (now i have shutters on those windows and can adjust if needed) but haven't had to. Watching sports on an LCD/LED, specifically high speed sports games like basketball (or as rock pointed out, hockey) look like pure crap on LED/LCD's vs. a plasma. And since 90% of the time, even with my wife in the room, the TV is on sports, it is key that they look good.

If you keep the "pure motion" on its got that soap opera effect and sports look kind of weird to me. Hockey shows the flaws as the puck has a tail like back when they had the fox hockey puck. If you configure your tv's like i do you turn most of that stuff off and the puck can "skip" as players pass it. It drives me f***ing crazy at times. Luckily I have my old plasma in the basement where I can move to watch the hawks.

I believe the 4k LED;s are supposed to be better at this but who the f*** wants to spend 5k on a TV?

I think you have to take them somewhere to be recycled or donated. You can't just put them out with the trash anymore.

I've got two old computer monitors and a TV that I want to get rid of. The only places near me that will take them are Best Buy and American TV.

Nothing lasts by more curb for more than 30 minutes.

Does your town/county have an electronic recycling center?

My friend thought the same thing. They put their TV on the curb and got in trouble with the city.

I googled it and the only places I could find were American and Best Buy. American doesn't charge anything so I'll probably go there.

Yeah, in the city where I lived there was no alley or anything so I forgot this exists. As soon as I moved to Oak park I was trying to find a way to get rid of my old water heater that exploded week 1 and my neighbor said put it on the curb and dont worry about it. Gone in about 20 min.
