Anyone ever take a job in another state?

When my wife and I decided to make the move out of state, I have a few added levels of complexity.

Not only do we own a home that we would have to sell, but we also have two daughters. So, any move out of state would include transferring schools and avoiding paying a mortgage while renting before we buy in the new location.

My biggest fear is they would say "we need you in 2 weeks"

I think an out of state employer would most likely be understanding and give you a little more time to take care of things at home and give you a little more time than a potential local hire.

Another thing I discussed with my wife was possibly having her continue to work here while using a recruiter to find a job out there. She'd have friends/family to stay with here while I started working in Portland. That way we'd still have 2 sources of income while she tries to land a job out there.

My thought was the same thing when we do it. IF i had to be working before we could move, my wife and kids could live with my parents in their basement while she finds a job. Our GOAL is to have her only work part time once we move, but between you and me... I dont see that happening... just dont tell her that.

Yeah I hear ya. The good thing about Portland though is that my wife could feasibly work part time or for a considerably lower salary than she's making now since the cost of living is lower there. But one step at a time for me. I don't even have an offer yet.

yea, for me it really all depends on what I would be making. If I can get a $10,000 increase in pay from what I make now (whic I think is reasonable if I move from my current career into an IT field), my wife could work part time as one of those women's party consultants (scrapbooking, candles, sex toys, you get the idea).

You live in Iowa. Outside of like Gary and Detroit, anything is "nice".

lol, but Gary has one of the best casinos (Majestic Star) in the Chicago area. A "little" crime in Gary aint gonna stop me from going there. :P

One of my closest friends is a security guard at that place. I still have not went to Gary to go there, though it isn't just cause of the area. (hell I grew up in South Chicago)
