Yeah, for bargain money I want him back. The bullpen still could have been worse last year and as it stands now there are some spots to fill. Signing Dunn, AJ, and possibly Konerko eats some of that spending cash.

We have enough range in the OF as is. As long as our RF isn't a -20-30 defender, we should be okay.

 

I'd give Viciedo and Quentin for Pence right now.

I kind of want to get Rios in RF. He looked tired as the season wore on last year.

 

I'd have no problem with Pence either though, for the record. They're both solid players.

Perhaps, but when 1.85 of his wins come from the fact that he plays good defense, and only 1 of it came from it the previous season, it makes you wonder where the middle ground is. I'm not going to suddenly suggest that Michael Bourn is a mediocre defensive player, but simply that he was mediocre offensively last year - there is no denying that -and that you can't count on him to put up a UZR of 18.5 again, especially when, in this instance, he would have Pierre to his right and Rios to his left.

 

At the end of the day, I just don't believe the Sox need to add more defense to the outfield, unless it's as a backup. The Sox need Quentin (or someone's) bat in RF, and I don't believe that trading for Michael Bourn would satisfy enough of the problem.

 

(I don't think Pence would either, because he can be a bit overrated or underrated offensively, depending on who you talk to, but I also think he's going to cost quite a bit more. I just think that's a situation the Sox should stay away from unless they get a great price, which is very realistic with Wade at the helm)

You're not wrong. I would just like to see us move Rios to RF though. He's better there. Our field is small, but the other stadiums in our division are larger than most and I think outfield defense is especially important in our division. Rios is a capable CF, but I think he's overrated a little bit there. It's not a make-or-break thing by any means...not a huge priority. But it would be a nice luxury to have.

Pence and Quentin actually aren't far apart offensively. Pence is the much better fielder though.

 

Quentin has the higher ceiling with the bat (Pence's ceiling wOBA might be .360ish) though.

In 2008 I had my choice of a signed Quentin ball or a signed Floyd ball, and I took the Floyd ball without hesitation - even knowing his peripherals.

He's adequate enough offensively to be a corner outfielder, even if half of it came in the span of a week and a half.

Totally.....and it's weird because when you look back at his baseball america descriptions, he's a "plus" defender. They even say he's capable of CF!!

Background: Quentin’s pro debut was delayed by Tommy John surgery after he was drafted in 2003, but he has made up for lost time. He has batted .316 with 42 homers in two pro seasons.

 

Strengths:

Quentin is a classic corner outfielder with above-average hitting skills, plate discipline and power. Despite his plate-crowding tactics—he leads the minors with 72 hit by pitches in the last two years—he can cheat on inside pitches and crush them as easily as he takes outside pitches to the opposite field. His instincts make him a plus baserunner and have enabled him to get by in center field when he moved there in July. His arm hasn’t regained its pre-surgery strength but is solid for right field.

 

 

Weaknesses:

Quentin’s effort in center field was universally praised, but he just doesn’t cover enough ground to play there on a regular basis. His pure speed is average at best.

 

 

The Future:

Luis Gonzalez, Shawn Green and Chad Tracy are blocking Quentin on Arizona’s outfield corners, but he has nothing left to prove in Triple-A. He could begin his big league career in center and move to right down the road.

 

Imagine him in CF.....lol

 

I also don't see him going oppo too much unless he's late on a pitch. He has a pure-pull approach. Maybe he's a product of some Greg Walker coaching...
