Good, this will give him two solid months of professional experience. Are they gonna start him in Bristol/GF or send him straight to Kanny?

I already asked him where he was going to be playing. I'll let you all know if he answers.

I'd be very surprised if he didn't start in rookie ball, even if only for a couple weeks.

I'd be real surprised if he goes as far as Kannapolis this summer. I doubt he's ready for even low A. Of course, I hope I'm wrong.

I agree, but maybe they have some Kanny trip in the contract. I doubt a month of low A would hurt him.

RE: Erik Johnson. http://www.losaltosonline.com/index.php?op...9&Itemid=54

Johnson’s opportunity could start as soon as next week. Recently chosen in the second round of Major League Baseball’s amateur draft by the Chicago White Sox, the starting pitcher from Cal expected to sign with the organization this week. Johnson has been told he will begin his career in the Pioneer League, playing for the White Sox’s advanced-rookie team in Great Falls, Mont.

“I’m real excited,” said Johnson, the 80th pick overall. “I think I’m ready to move on.”

No new news on Jeff Soptic that I can find.

RE: Ian Gardeck:

http://www.nwherald.com/2011/07/01/south-g...th-sox/a22zfiw/

Gardeck said he has been in regular contact with the Sox since the draft.

“We’re just trying to come to terms right now,” Gardeck said. “I’m going to let it take its path.”

MLB teams have until Aug. 15 to sign drafted players.

For Gardeck, who is committed to playing at the University of Alabama next season, the deadline provides plenty of time to weigh his options.

“If I do sign, it will probably be closer to [Aug. 15],” Gardeck said. “I’ve got a lot of opportunities.”

SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!

Looks like Ben O'Shea (10th rounder)isn't coming aboard:

O'Shea had previously signed a scholarship with UMD to attend the university, and had until the middle of August to decide whether he was going to sign a contract with the White Sox.

For O'Shea, his decision came down to the more concrete option: attend college, get a solid education, and have something to fall back on, just in case.

"I have decided to go to Maryland next year, I feel that education is still important right now in case baseball doesn't work out," said O'Shea.

Huh...how did we also miss it in the Trib yesterday?

Extra innings: The White Sox signed second-round draft pick Erik Johnson, a right-handed pitcher from Cal, and both he and top choice Keenyn Walker will report to rookie league at Great Falls, Mont., next week. ... The Sox's bullpen has a 1.08 ERA in its last 19 games.

RE: (Chandler ) James Shepherd, round 41 draftee of the Sox.

http://www.nationofblue.com/chandler-sheph...nt-impact-8172/

Chandler pitched Lawrence County to a state championship his freshman year, and set the state record for scoreless innings his sophomore year (46 in a row, which is still a Kentucky record). He missed his entire junior year due to recovery from Tommy John surgery and finished his senior year with batting statistics of 39 hits and 24 RBI in 93 at bats (.419 BA). His pitching statistics were even more impressive at 136 strikeouts, 8 walks and only 28 hits in 73 innings pitched (.67 ERA). I told Chandler that was a pretty impressive ERA, and he said that ERA is kind of deceptive, because “you have to have a good defense behind you” as well (which I thought was a very mature response).

I asked if he was going pro or going to UK (he was drafted in round 41 of this year’s MLB draft by the White Sox), and Chandler said he is “leaning UK” but that he would have to see what Chicago offered before he made his final decision. He did say that if they both decide to forego the pros and attend UK, he and fellow 2011 commit Max Kuhn were scheduled to be roommates.

There's a video at the end of the story for those who want to view it.

RE: Joseph Pistorese, round 44 - leaning to college.

http://missoulian.com/sports/high-school/b...1cc4c03286.html

But Pistorese most likely won't be signing a contract to begin his professional career in the ranks of the White Sox minor-league system before the Aug. 15 deadline. Instead, Pistorese hopes to earn a scholarship to play college ball at Washington State.

Playing for the WSU Cougars could give Pistorese the opportunity to possibly play alongside Missoula product Ben Roberts, who despite committing to Washington State was picked in the seventh round of the draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Roberts also has yet to sign on the dotted line.

RE: Chadd Krist, 13th round selection.

http://www.dailycal.org/2011/07/04/looking...seball-in-2012/

From the outside, it looks like Cal loses big parts of its team. Shortstop Marcus Semien, catcher Chadd Krist, SP Erik Johnson and closer Matt Flemer are all likely gone to the Draft, but the Bears are lucky in that they can fill the voids.

Couldn't find any other stories than this. It's not a "set in stone" article, but just as well.
