John Danks would be gone after next year as the Cards will not have the money to sign him. Rios is much older and more expensive than Rasmus.

No way is he going to sign a cheaper extension than what was offered him, with or without his bad start. His start wasnt even all that bad for the most part, a lot of well pitched games and no offense whatsoever.

I agree. I think in this day and age, GMs are smart enough to overlook W/L records for pitchers. He also has the whole left-handed thing going for him. If guys like Randy Wolf can get $10 million a year, Danks is in line for a huge pay day.

Continuing to give Rios 4 or 5 ABs per game isn't going to help us win a division either.

 

Something I've noticed about Rios lately is that it seems to not be a natural instinct for him to hustle. It's like he had to remind himself to run a pop up out in Colorado the day after he got benched. Then in Chicago, he had a soft hit up the middle (that Castro almost fielded) where he was jogging to first the second he hit the ball.

 

Rios is stealing money.

I'll have to copy Les Grobstein's show and say, 'He's a bum.' At least in baseball terms. Like Fathom said, he can't hustle, he has no instinct to hustle. He's a baseball bum. He's not a bum in real life because he's made millions of dollars and is in the upper echelon of society.

 

You are all right, though. Nobody's going to acquire him and pay that salary, nobody.

Sox need to cut their losses, however, and pay half of it or more just to get rid of him.

Lilli has been by bar the best defensive cf on the team this year, I don't even think that's up for debate. Obviously Alex has the track record but this year, it's no contest.

Im not really sure you can definitively say who is the better defensive player, from my eyes its Rios, but other people say Lilli.

 

As for Rios, just have to hope that he can get it back together. When youre sucking its not always easy to have the same desire as when things are going well. Not saying thats how it should be, but for the time being all you can do is hope that he turns it around, because in my opinion hes still the most talented CF on the Sox by a pretty wide margin.

This year you can imo. Like I said, Alex definitely has the track record but this season and this season alone, Brent has been the better cf.

Rios is obviously dis-interested and dogging it this year. I've never seen a guy making about 15 mill look so unhappy. I tried to like Rios and thought he was avictim of bad luck because he was hitting the ball right at people. But it sure does look like he has shut it down.

Would this be a feasible trade? Sox pick up a good chunk of Rios's salary and ship him and Danks to StL. for Rasmus. Am I under-valueing Danks and over-valueing Rasmus? Or both the Danks for Rasmus and just DFA Rios. The next few years an OF of Rasmus, Q, and Viciedo sounds good to me. Toronto got someone to bite on Vernon Wells contract, maybe the Sox can find a taker for Rios.

I've been advocating Major League playing time for de Aza for the last year. He had a very good year last year, and is doing it again this season, especially of late.

Look at his numbers versus RHP. He's hitting .338 with a .400 OBP and a .560 Slugging %. I think he had an OBP of about .420 vs. RHP last season.

 

It's not fair to say that he couldn't be productive at the Major League level. He's really not had a chance to prove whether or not he is a Big Leaguer. He's only had 50 Major League at bats over the last 3 seasons. Even then, he was productive in his very limited playing time last year for the Sox, batting .300.

He plays very good defense, and can steal a base. What's not to like? If they could dump that Rios contract, I'd love to see him get a shot at playing CF and leading off.

You're not alone. I'm sure the Sox have their reasons, but we as fans are pulling our collective hair out watching Rios dog it, Dunn swing and miss constantly, and the rest of the team fail when there are runners is scoring position.

 

I see this team being right where they are come the trade deadline, which means there will be a trade or two to improve the team. I highly doubt we see Rios, Teahen, or Pierre going anywhere nor Viciedo or De Aza coming up before the end of August.

I was shot down everytime I mentioned it. I just wanted out of that contract so bad, and although I didn't think he would be this bad I figured on a .700 - .750 OPS, and for what we are paying him that is unacceptable.

 

The only problem to that was finding a replacement.

 

DJ's getting on him all the time about not even moving a step when a pickoff play's coming at 2B or when Edwin is on the mound taking forever and he's just disinterestedly almost not even paying attention to what's going on.

 

Even I lose interest when Edwin is on the mound.
