US U-20's advance to the quarter finals with a 1-0 win over Colombia. Rubin scored and Steffen saved a PK in the 83rd minute. Supposedly CCV, Miazga and Desevio Payne were all beasts on defense. If Payne (currently starting in the Eredevisie) can become an answer at one of our FB positions down the road that'd be great. We've struggled there ever since Cherundolo retired.

 

They play Serbia at 12:30 on Saturday night/Sunday morning. A trip to the semi-finals is very possible right now.

Payne looks good. I'm not sure I'd be rushing him into the full team, but maybe in a couple years. There's not a ton of depth on this team, but there's also a lot of high level prospects. Carter-Vickers might be able to play for the senior team within a year. Steffen looks like a strong GK prospect. Zelalem is legit. Hyndman looks like a future Michael Bradley. Rubin looks good. Patience is key and hopefully these guys keep improving, but it looks like a nice group.

 

A lot of the young players on the US are looking good ahead of the Gold Cup. I think if the US win the Gold Cup, they get automatic qualification for the 2018 WC.

The US has a couple players who, when on form, are capable of carrying the roster and playing with the big countries. Bradley is absolutely one of those guys (see the win @ Italy a couple years back for another example). Jozy carried the US through a tough qualifying stretch in '13. Dempsey is obviously Dempsey.

 

The problem for the US, at the moment anyway, is that unlike the countries above them, there aren't enough guys like Bradley/Altidore/Dempsey to step up when any of them are off form (the Altidore injury in Brazil was a killer). The good news is that the talent pool continues to expand and there are some really promising youngsters.

I saw Marcelo on the 35 man roster and assumed he was going to start. I guess they're going with Filipe Luis?

 

They have Coutihno instead of Oscar, who I feel is actually just as good, if not better. Not having Hulk hurts, but I feel that as long as Brazil has Neymar, they're going places.

Chile wins 2-0, Ecuador fought them step for step for a while, but Chile's talent really showed for the last half hour.

 

Matias Fernandez decided to be an idiot and got a second yellow in stoppage time. I guess it's a good thing for Chile that their group is pretty awful and won't really need Fernandez in the group stage.

I was thinking why cant Hudson do more games. I really enjoy listening to his passion and his lines he comes up with seem authentic, not something he has written down just waiting to spew out.

Paraguay came back from 2-0 and drew Argentina. Argentina had a lot of good chances to go up 3-1 in the second half but couldn't finish.

 

Martinez also subbed on Tevez and Higuain after Paraguay scored their first goal, like they wanted to go offense-heavy when they probably should have gone defensive.

out on PKs to Serbia. There was some really bad penalties taken. Other than the one kick off the post/crossbar, the other kicks looked missed when addressing the ball.

 

But a decent showing atleast. Lost some guys to injury during the tournament that could've really made a difference last night and going forward. But a few guys to look out for over the next few years.
