Tennessee suspends WR Da'Rick Rogers, probably for the season.

Anyone catch the All Access special on OSU last night? I wanted to run out and hit someone after watching it. So glad football is f***ing back, and this year I actually have a head coach.

Well, yeah, but you know what I mean. It could have been any number of players and I wouldn't have cared much. But it just happens to be that our Top 5 in the country/future 1st round draft pick at WR decides to be a freaking idiot and blows up at the coaches and essentially gets kicked off the team. It's not like he robbed someone or was selling drugs. He mouthed off to Dooley and is paying the price.

 

With all the other stuff that has happened to this program in the last 10 years, I'd consider it an extension of our run of bad luck.

Well, actually most sources say its from repeated violations of substance abuse. Now, whether that is weed, or whatever, who knows, but he isn't getting the boot due to just talking back to a coach. Lets not cast Rogers as a model citizen who just can't hold his tongue. The kid is pretty bad trouble.

Oh, he's definitely bad trouble. I never said he was a model citizen. But there's plenty of guys in college football who have bad attitudes and big egos that are able to keep it check to the point where they don't get kicked off the team. Most of them are at least selfish enough to follow the rules not because they agree with them, but because they want that NFL paycheck.

 

And I know for a fact that it wasn't just substance abuse. If it was just drug-related, he would have had a 1 game suspension. From what I know (and this is from a friend's friend who works for the football team so it may not be 100% accurate): this "indefinite" suspension was caused because he flipped out on the coaches and said some malicious/ridiculous things, so they had no choice other than to suspend him. Of course, that stemmed from the fact that he was going to get suspended for the 1st game b/c he failed a drug test. It wasn't the failed drug test. It was how he handled the news of his failed drug test and subsequent suspension.

 

Regardless, most guys on the team didn't like Rogers. So I can only hope this is one of those "addition by subtraction" situations.

The running game was definitely awful last year. It's definitely not something I'm used to as a Tennessee fan. I'm really hoping we have it figured out. By all accounts, the running game has looked very good so far but we'll see what happens once they start playing real games. I think stealing Jay Graham from you guys was a big hire.

 

And quite honestly, with all of our starting o-lineman coming back, they have to be better. They are all upperclassmen now (except for our Soph LT). And our starting RB this year is Rajion Neal, who has now set all of Tennessee's strength and conditioning records (except for 1) at the RB position. Kind of crazy when you think of all of the awesome RB's that have played at Tennessee since the 1990s (when they really started tracking all these strength and conditioning things) - Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, Charlie Garner, James Stewart, Arian Foster, Jay Graham, Cedric Houston, Montario Hardesty, etc. All of those guys are/were NFL RBs. But, we'll see if Neal is just a workout warrior or if he can back it up on the field.

I'm pumped for this weekend, but I know that generally college football is terrible for at least another month. Illinois plays a bunch of nobodies until conference play.

Super excited for DGB's first game. He's been a gem in scrimmages. But very worried about mizzou's offensive line woes. 3 starters down to injury.

Um, what??? It's pretty much the opposite. Saying we're playing nobodies would imply we'll have an easy 4-0 start. Hardly. 2 non-conference teams that might combine for 20 wins and a late night road game, that's 3/4 games.

 

Western Michigan is a solid team, Carder is outstanding, that is going to be a really tough game to start with (see: last year).

 

Arizona State is down a bit from last year, but a night road game in the Pac 12? Probably a pick em game at best.

 

Louisiana Tech...assuming you just saw the name and figured they suck. If the game was on a neutral field, La Tech would be favored (plus they have a vote in the poll). They'll probably win the WAC. Lost by 7 to TCU in their bowl game last year.

 

1/4 games is against a nobody, Charleston Southern. This is actually extremely far from an easy schedule, especially with a new coaching staff coming. All winnable, but easily could be 1-3 if they don't play well in every game.

Yes sir. all feeds are through the receiver via HDMI. So ESPN3 via XBox, for those random off games to watch, and DirecTV of course for the rest.

Would you like them to play 4 BCS conference teams the first 4 games? Only one's a 1-AA.

 

The point is they aren't nobodies. Nobodies would be 4-0 by rolling the ball onto the field and having a picnic. 3 of the 4 should be good/close games. The schedule is not easy to start the year.
