Was just thinking about this topic because Fathom brought it up in the game thread.

 

Other than Sale, Viciedo and Quintana, there's not really anyone I would be upset to trade between now and the beginning of next season.

 

For a while, Mitchell would have been on this list, but that's even starting to be a bit depressing.

 

The only other minor leaguer we might want to watch start a game for the rest of the year is Simon Castro.

 

Just can't get over the lack of power from Konerko...something has to be seriously wrong with that hand/wrist, at some point, it might be better to shut it down for 10-15 days and let Dan Johnson try, but I realize he's the captain, he has a ton of pride, definitely he won't ask to take himself out of the line-up no matter how much he's hurting.

 

Ooops, didn't make it a multiple answer possibility.

 

Let's assume everyone will pick Sale first then, to make it interesting.

 

Who would you pick SECOND after Chris?

He get's my vote. I can't wait to see what this kid can do in a year or two.

Alright, since I already voted for Chris.. my number two would be Quintana. I know it's early in his career, but he's been pretty good. A lot of people mention Buehrle when they talk about him, and that worked out well. Dayan would be third.

Flowers just really hasn't had a fair chance at all to get any kind of offensive rhythm, but to think he'd be able to hit for a higher average than Dunn or strike out much less than Dunn...it would be a big risk to go with Tyler as the starting catcher in 2013.

I'll be shocked if AJP isn't back. I would also be shocked that if he leaves, the Sox go into next season with Flowers as the starting catcher. I predict that K. Suzuki would be the starting catcher next year if AJ is gone.

If the White Sox make the playoffs and have decent attendance the rest of the season...it would make a lot of sense to bring back Youk and AJ.

 

But it could just as quickly become apparent that the Sox need to move on and they can't afford to invest $20-22 million per year on two players declining in their mid 30's.

 

AJ's had a great season so far, he has been by far our most consistent hitter from Day 1, but you can't expect that when he's 36 and 37. He's been an everyday catcher now for 12 seasons, and he's probably playing more in 2012 than in any other season with the Sox.

That's what Buehrle was up against from the time he was drafted...it's the same thing Jose is facing now. Even the doubts from Ventura about him being able to finish out games.

What Quintana has done so far is incredible. Very underrated future in this organization, IMO.

The question is better phrased as "Who is our most valuable asset?" The answer is clearly Chris, even with the injury concerns.

 

Then I think you've got Alejandro, Quintana, and Dayan.

He's one of those guys who has a lot more value to the White Sox than what we could get back for him if we put him on the trade market.

Your title threw me off. It made it seem like it was a multiple answer poll. I meant to select Sale, Viciedo, Reed, and Jones. But since Jones was my last selection, it's the only one that counted.

If they traded Youkilis I don't think they make the postseason. If they don't make the postseason, it doesn't matter who they keep after Sale for the 2013 season. Lengthy rebuilding ahead.

I think you could get actually get a pretty decent prospect back for Alex at this point. But I know I am in the minority.

Once upon a time, Gordon Beckham would have been included as an option by anyone starting this thread.

 

Of course, Sale is the no-brainer, but after that, the answer to this question depends on what the team is trying to accomplish by making this trade. If it's a rebuilding kind of move, then I wouldn't be a fan of trading Viciedo. If it's a move made with this year's playoffs in mind, I'm not sure why anyone would choose Konerko. Quintana is actually one that I wouldn't get as upset about because I think it would be a case of selling high. I like him, think he came straight from heaven for this team, but doubt you would get a better return for him than you would right now.

Sale is our Verlander. I wouldn't trade him.

Realistically I think we have enough talent to get the second wildcard. Then anything can happen in the playoffs.

Not with that huge hitch in his swing. Look how fast YOUK gets to the ball, with a similar set up. And he's 7 years older. Or Rios, compare last year's swing with this year's.

 

Beckham has no chance to hit a fastball anywhere but into RF these days. The ONLY pitch he can possibly pull is a breaking ball.

 

With that stance, when he tries to turn and burn, he just fouls it back or into the 1B/RF stands....EVERY time.

Sale, Quintana, and Reed. Too good and cheap to trade.

See, I'd include Reed if I got the right deal.

 

I like his arm and his stuff, but again, he needs to change the eye level of the hitter. Fathom has been mentioning this for weeks now.

 

Obviously he is a nice piece to have, but if I was getting the right piece back, I wouldn't hesitate to move him.

Something about Reed's fastball, it's not consistently crisp, either. Sometimes it's THERE, other times, it's a liability. For a closer, you need to have more consistency with your #1 pitch, if it's not going to be the slider.

I know Santos went on to get hurt with Toronto...and it is pretty impossible to know if the same thing would have happened here, but I liked his stuff a lot better than Reed's.
