August 2, 201213 yr Jeff Passan @JeffPassan Source: Phillies have placed Cliff Lee on waivers. Executives expect him to clear Friday afternoon, be eligible for trade.
August 2, 201213 yr 13:$25M, 14:$25M, 15:$25M, 16:$27.5M club option ($12.5M buyout) That's making Peavy's deal look sane for 2013. Plus, we already have four lefties and Buehrle coming back, haha.
August 2, 201213 yr QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 03:11 PM) They would have to throw in like $40M to whatever team takes him. They won't do that, they were asking the Rangers to both take on his contract and to give legit talent back.
August 2, 201213 yr QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 02:17 PM) They won't do that, they were asking the Rangers to both take on his contract and to give legit talent back. Well then he's never going to get moved. No one can absorb an extra $25M a year like that for a nearly-34-year-old pitcher.
August 2, 201213 yr Could anybody afford to claim that whole contract? Maybe the Dodgers? I don't think the Yankees can right now.
August 2, 201213 yr QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 2, 2012 -> 03:30 PM) Well then he's never going to get moved. No one can absorb an extra $25M a year like that for a nearly-34-year-old pitcher. This is probably the right answer anyway. That Phillies team may be out of things this year but any team throwing Halladay, Lee, and Hamels at you has a shot at competing. And they signed that contract so that he could help them compete now.
August 2, 201213 yr Author It would be interesting to see who else from the Phillies went on waivers today, because those maybe the guys they are realistically looking to deal.

Surely we'll be adding Papelbon to our bullpen by the end of the week. Edited August 2, 201213 yr by caulfield12
August 3, 201213 yr That is one nice thing about the KW teams, there's been ONE terrible year, 2 below .500 years, and the rest have been good years. Meanwhile, it seems the "super crafty" GMs have a few years of brilliance (Theo and Amaro) where they throw massive amounts of money at everything, then it crashes and burns. Theo just merely jumped ship. The Red Sox are in for a long, painful decline.
August 3, 201213 yr MLB Network had someone on who was saying Cliff Lee has a .900+ OPS against when he's in the stretch this year. As good as he's been, he's not a guy you want to owe $80 million or so the next 3 years.
August 3, 201213 yr Nobody is claiming Lee, and that's as close to a sure thing as there's ever been in the history of waivers. He's owed so much money I doubt that the Phillies can eat enough money to trade him even after he clears waivers. He's stuck there for at least another year or two.

The only team with the cash to make a bluff like that is LAD.

August 3, 201213 yr QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 10:00 AM) They said that about Rios too Rios had youth going for him. And Cliff Lee's contract makes Rios' contract look like a pittance in comparison
August 3, 201213 yr QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 11:00 AM) They said that about Rios too They did not say that about Rios when we claimed him, in fact there might have been other teams willing to claim him other than us, and it was possible that Torotno would hold on to him until they let him go. They say that about Rios after his 2011 season.
August 3, 201213 yr Is the player automatically notified if he goes on waiver wire, or can it be on the QT?
August 3, 201213 yr Heyman just tweeted that Lee didn't clear waivers. I wonder who and what that means.
August 3, 201213 yr Cliff Lee Claimed On Waivers By Ben Nicholson-Smith [August 3 at 3:46pm CST] Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee has been claimed on waivers, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter). The Phillies can now pull Lee back off of waivers, assign his contract to the team that won the claim, or work a trade out with the claiming team. Lee can block trades and claims to 21 teams, which could limit the Phillies' flexibility, depending on the identity of the claiming team.

August 3, 201213 yr QUOTE (Jeff Liefer @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 01:55 PM) Kenny??? I was going to post my KW meme from the other thread, since it mentioned Cliff Lee, but it's no longer there.
August 3, 201213 yr Author QUOTE (Jeff Liefer @ Aug 3, 2012 -> 03:55 PM) Kenny??? I wouldn't be completely shocked. Seeing as the LAD just got Blanton, I doubt it is them.
