It wasn't just a bad few weeks for Konerko, it was about a 3 month stretch where he clearly wasn't the same player. The Sox gave Konerko every chance in the world to snap out of it, and unfortunately, he never could this year. It's too bad he can't play the outfield even at a mediocre level, as he would have been a huge upgrade over Viciedo vs RHP.

Once his wrist got hurt, he was done. Too bad, I would have loved to see how he ended up with a healthy season, after the start he had. Plus once PK got hurt, Dunn really slumped too.

526 times in Major League history has a player had 3+ HR in a game. Once has that game accounted for his entire season total #DanJohnson

Huh, I thought Tuffy Rhodes fell off the planet after that opening day 3 homerun fest

I can see Toronto picking up Johnson and him hitting about 40 home runs. Seems like thats Toronto's thing to do, find a guy that no one wanted and play him everyday and he becomes a huge home run hitter. Its worked for them with Jose and Edwin . . .

I wish the Sox would find offensive diamonds in the rough - Although Sox do a good job of finding pitching like that.

they have had their fair share of misses. Lyle Overbay, Aaron Hill fell off the map, Travis Snyder never became what they hoped, Adam Lind has been up and down, and Colby Rasmus still hasnt put together any semblence of the total package he was touted as. Edwin Encarnacion was considered to be fairly expendable coming into this season as well.

And I dont care what anyone says, Bautista is juicing IMO.

DeWayne Wise has twice been that guy down the stretch too.

Viciedo should have been sitting August 1 at the latest v right-handers. If Dan Johnson couldn't play left, Dunn could have. Can't believe they didn't try anything different to get the extra bat in the lineup they desperately needed.

Carlos Quentin, AJ, Jermaine Dye, Jim Thome (considering he was coming off a major injury), Alexei Ramirez certainly qualifies...Viciedo, to a lesser extent.

Even Wise, Flowers and Johnson the final 2 months this year.

It's just that we didn't get what we needed out of Konerko, Dunn, Liriano, Peavy...the list goes on and on for the final 4-6 week disappearing act.

Alexei and Dayan both struggled quite a bit down the stretch. AJ. Rios was one of our few consistent threats. YOUK against the Tigers or on the road was a disaster. Everyone knows the Beckham story, second verse, same as the first.

Better than 50/50 odds Dan Johnson doesn't hit 3 homers in the major leagues in 2013.

Johnson gives a good AB. For a lefty stick at the league minimum with power and the ability to take a walk, I'd like him back in whatever role. If you go nutty with the rebuilding stuff this offseason he's a fine stopgap, otherwise he's best as a bench bat who can fill in if necessary & force himself into greater playing time if he's good enough. There have been a lot of players around his age & experience level who have bounced around a while before having 2-3 good years as starters somewhere, and while unlikely, you can never say never.

Disagree.

I think he at least gets a bench role somewhere at the minimum, and over 100 AB or so he'll get at least 4.

Dan Johnson had some very good PAs with the Sox. He made pitchers work and usually ended up on base. I don't see why you wouldn't have him stick around and battle for a roster spot next spring.

You really can't waste a bench spot on a guy who can only DH & play 1st. Especially in the AL.

He's basically a poor man's Adam Dunn. They are almost exactly the same age too. Johnson is a few months younger.

A VERY poor man's Adam Dunn. Career .750 OPS as a 1st baseman/DH? Yuck.

Who are big market teams in the AL that need a DH? Baltimore? Boston?

The White Sox.

Dan Johnson did himself a favor on the last day of the season in a meaningless game. He assured himself a spot on an AAA roster again next season. If he doesn't want to get on with his life, it was a great moment for him.

Ya know what, I'm gonna go full blown heel right here and say I agree.

Ever since I heard an A's announcer mention "all the platoons worked out" or something along those lines it had me thinking about how our team didnt do that.

A Wise/Tank split should have happened, and a T Flo/Johnson DH while PK was hurt platoon would have won us a couple games maybe.

Dan Johnson isn't a good baseball player and he's only had about a month or two of appearing to be a worthwhile bench player. Let's not get crazy now. I'd be happy with finding a way to keep him on our bench next year and that's about it. If PK or Dunn get hurt next year, I'm happy to give him a shot.

This might be the reason why they can't get the job done after ASB. The bench is always beyond bad.

By that theory, Kotsay and Jones should have worked over Thome, but it didn't.

All depends on the quality of the players in the platoon. Assuming Wise and/or Johnson would have excelled with 350 or so at-bats, and that Viciedo would still have crushed LH'ers with just limited plate appearances, that's a guessing game at best.

They belong into my "beyond bad" category.

Whoa bro. I want him on the team but how about your first bat off the bench, versatile guy, who can play 1B/DH/OF. Thanks.
