This deal is a steal. Kind of surprised Sale signed for so cheap.

He was on sale...I couldn't resist.

This. Sale's good years, if he's healthy, are $20M pitcher years. 1 of those makes this contract a steal, 2 and it's a mugging, 3 it's... well, you get the idea.

He gave the Sox a $20 million season last year.

Even if he does get hurt, if he gives you 2 more of those seasons in the first 5 years, he's already giving you your bang for your buck.

I never would have thought Sale would come this cheap. I was on board for shopping him because I thought it would take a whole lot more than this to get it done.... just wow. Terrific move.

this team has dick for talent to pay, might as well pay a young stud starter. if his arm explodes, oh damn, team still sucks.

Exactly. I'm just shocked you could get such a good player to sign a deal so team-friendly that it basically removes risk from the equation. Sale is going to be making closer money. Wow.

Hard not to like this, but I said exactly that when we extended Danks soooooo

By the end of this contract it isn't crazy that a guy like Chris Sale could be worth $32 million a year on the open market. That is my perspective on this deal. Those last two options years are a massive discount. Thanks Chris!

Nice, now please don't let his arm fall off. :pray

Even if you lose him for an entire year, the contract should still be a bargain. That is how good this deal is.

Really good deal for the Sox if his arm doesnt explode

Chris sale can make $60M w/ 2 options if he wins a cy young, $59M if he finishes 2nd or 3rd in any year 13-18. #chisox

Compare this to Tim Lincecum, who got $63.5m in years 2 thru 6. #WhiteSox deal worth risk. Sale could get $60m for years 3 thru 9. #SFGiants

I like the deal. Works for me! (Also not my money!)

Can I get a hellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll yessssh!

Sale could put up $32 million of value this year.

Hell he could do that and not win the Cy Young. Verlander was $30.8 million last year in the fWAR world.

I absolutely love this deal... Well done Hahn.

So let's just call it 7yr/60 mil.

:cheers

Risky with any pitcher, but this is still a big market club with a decent size payroll, totally love the risk here.

WOW, this is fantastic! Still trying to figure out what these numbers mean, but I'm very pleased we can lock down Sale. If we are going to develop sparse talent, we might as well lock it down when we hit.

Absolutely fantastic move. We just locked up a potential top 5 starter in baseball for the next 4 or 6 years (excluding this coming season). The total cost of his abritration years (including his minor bump this year) is only about $19 million or $6.3 million per. For comparison, Tim Lincecum got $18 million in his 3rd arbitration year alone. I have no doubt if we went year to year with Sale he'd easily get $25 to $30 million over the next three seasons.

On top of that, we get him for three potential free agency years all at affordable costs, with only one of them guaranteed. We're talking about $60 to $90 million in value for a total cost of $37 million, with only $12 million guaranteed. Having those two option years is just incredibly valuable. They mitigate so much of the risk associated with this type of deal.

Also, just having the cost certainty is a huge plus. We don't have to worry about him winning the Cy Young award and then getting Lincecum type money in his arb years. With Sale now locked up at set prices, we should have more flexibility to spend in free agency to fill some of our offensive needs, especially as guys like Konerko, Dunn, & Rios come off the books.

Hahn deserves a lot of credit for convincing Sale to agree to a below-market extension.

Correct.

If he stays healthy, Hahn may very well have just created a contending team for the next 7 years. An underpaid ace can do that.

If healthy, this is robbery. But it's also a nice reward for Chris. We know what Chris is capable of.

You have Sale-Danks-Peavy-Q-Santiago all under team control for at least 3 years. Sounds like a good place to start from.

Agree 100%. It all starts with starting pitching and having a legit ace makes filling out the rest of rotation a lot easier.
