Why go for a polished, low upside bat in the 3rd round?

I suppose it is meant to balance out the low risk picks in the first two rounds. We might also just see something different than other evaluators. Definitely seems like money is playing a role here, but like everyone else, not sure what we're saving up for.

When is the next Sox pick?

I'm cool if they're saving for a big overslot guy, but otherwise you shouldn't waste early picks on guys with limited upside. Your 3rd round pick should be your 3rd best chance to get an impact player.

Tellez & Tank 1B & DH in the future hahaha whole lot of beef.

Would be nice to add another potential big LH bat to our system along with Barnum.

Not to be flippant, but the Sox just don't understand the draft process.

Rowdy Tellez-1B

Bobby Wahl-RHP

Wil Crowe-RHP

AJ Puk-LHP

Trey Michalczewski-3B

Cavan Biggio-2B/3B

In that order please :D

I would have said yes a couple years ago, but last year seemed like a big improvement. Took a ton of high upside guys and even went overslot on some non top 10 picks. That's why I believe May is likely an underslot guy.

Not that I like the May pick, you don't know what their plan is. You shouldn't be critical when you know next to nothing about not only the players, but the Sox plans, their agreements with other players, etc.

I know you can't post without being critical, but wait til these guys suck in our system for a while before you rip the draft.

It's also the end of the line for many farm hands as the Sox sign the draftees and have to make room on the farm clubs.Get cut or promoted.

Will do, thanks.

The catcher the Phillies just grabbed:

A talented two-sport athlete, Sweaney scored 14 touchdowns and snagged six interceptions as a wide receiver/defensive back last fall

They love athletes.

I like that strategy less and less as the rounds go by. Take the guy you want in the third round.

Talking about him being a bullpen guy on MLB.com

Was mentioned with possibly the best curve ball in all of college ball.

Throws 97, lower arm angle, "#1 curveball in college baseball", projects as a reliever.

Have to think we won't have him start out as a reliever with those two tools, but won't get much of a leash with control issues

A big and strong right-hander who had a solid sophomore season in TCU's rotation, there's little question about Mitchell's arm strength. His power stuff enabled him to strike out 11.8 hitters per nine innings and to keep them to a .198 batting average against in 2012. His fastball will sit 88-92 mph and he has a downer type curve to go with it. Mitchell is very durable, but he's going to have to improve his command -- he also walked 5.38 per nine -- and show an ability to throw a third pitch to remain a starter and stay high on Draft boards. If he does end up in the pen, expect some upticks in velocity from the right-hander.

Mitchell is a big, strong righty with some power stuff and some serious strikeout numbers. The de facto ace of the TCU staff since the middle of his freshman year, Mitchell throws a heavy fastball that sits in the 91-93 range and he can throw it for strikes. His bread and butter is a power breaking ball that sits anywhere from 78-82 and gets him plenty of strikeouts. He throws a change-up as a third offering, but it doesn't profile as anything more than a change of pace at this point. In 2012, Mitchell recorded 101 strikeouts in 77 innings, a very impressive total that points toward his top-flight potential. On the flip side, however, his command was frequently a problem as he issued 46 free passes and hit 10 batters in 2012. The degree to which Mitchell can refine his command and harness his power arsenal will ultimately determine his success. With stuff like his he could easily end up a power reliever, but the team that tabs him in 2013 will definitely want to try him out as a starter.

MLB Comparison: Rafael Betancourt

Keith Law likes him. Keith also notes that many see him as a reliever.

Baseball America ranks him #50 overall, ahead of our second and third round picks.

Chances of 3rd round picks being huge contributors aren't that great. Go back to the 2008 third round. Craig Kimbrel is by far the big prize, then Danny Espinosa, then guys like Morel, Zach Stewart and Tekotte.

If your 3rd rounder pans out, you are doing really well.

Their past draft record cannot be defended, but really at this point of the draft, these guys are all lottery tickets.
