Red Sox interested in Thornton

Featured Replies

From Rosenthal:

Sources: #WhiteSox’s Thornton on long #RedSox list of possible bullpen targets. #Braves also inquired on Thornton; interest “limited.”

Figure this can act as the Matt Thornton rumor thread, as he almost certainly will be traded.

We'll take Jackie Bradley.

:D

Just give us some kind of hitting prospect

Get it done. If somebody wants Matt, trade him. Start this parade of trades.

I bet they won't want to trade him until that fundraiser thing happens

We won't get much for him but he is replaceable. Maybe we can at least get something useful.

Nick Cafardo ‏@nickcafardo 10m

The Red Sox are looking everywhere for relief. Interested in White Sox trio Addison Reed, Matt Thornton and Matt Lindstrom.

Okay, then I'l say with a straight face: Jackie Bradley. Gimme

Bryce Brentz please. Probably a lot more realistic than Bradley. He's got big time power and can take over for Rios if he's traded.

I could see the Sox interested in Brandon Workman. He was someone they were linked with when he was available in the draft.

Brentz would be a nice get.

I believe Workman was just called up to big leagues. Showcasing?

I don't blame Rick Hahn for trying.

Agreed. It's still July 10th, the price better be steep. You don't have to trade him by tomorrow.

I tweeted him and asked about that. Hayes responded to me that Thornton has an option for next year. I thought he was free at year's end.

team option, i think he will get a 500K buyout....he's GONE

But he won't be here. How much is the option for? A team trading him could look at him as a guy that they also get next year.

He should be trying

no way, he's paid almost like a closer, it would be a huge overpay just on salary alone, not to mention surrendering anything of value prospect-wise.

It is also midseason, so his number for this year is only $3 million, not $6 million.

The price is probably high right now because there is still 3 weeks to the trade deadline and, unlike the Marlins, we're not just looking for salary dumps.

As the deadline gets closer, the price will get more reasonable and some team will have a more pressing need and a trade will get done.

And, as much as some want to bash Thornton, he's a lefty who throws 95mph. Teams value that plus his experience.

Nothing wrong with Hahn asking a lot. Its basic negotiations, you always ask for more.
