There needs to be a name for Buehrle-type pitchers

I see nobody will point out to me who is an ace in baseball since Mark got good. Talking about 'ace' is stupid because there are not many out there and never have been that many since the 60s when the mound was low.

As far as Cliff Lee he was 22-3 in 2008, then 14-13, 12-9, 17-8, 6-9, 14-8, 4-4

Oh I forgot records don't matter in baseball. You tell me how he was an ace more than Buehrle.

If you want to insist on using the word "ace," let's look at Cliff Lee (whom I pointed out), Felix Hernandez, Clayton Kershaw. Those guys are absolute studs year in and year out. Lee's probably going to start regressing soon, but until he does, you keep him there.

I'm just sick of people acting like there's something wrong with Buerhle cause he's "not an ace" when there are VERY FEW aces in baseball year in and out.

Dan Bernstein was talking about Buehrle yesterday, saying that he's having a typical Buehrle season so far. He's just getting run support so the Wins are coming.

Forget about wins, he has 10 quality starts in which he's averaged 7 innings and a 1.53 ERA, That's not typical. Now he could have a Verlander type month where he can't get anyone out, but for now, anyone who doesn't think Buehrle is a top-2 or 3 Cy this season, is an idiot.

And don't get me started on Pitching WAR. Complete nonsense.

You've been on this board for 12 years now. If you somehow missed the running "Mark Buehrle is not an ace" joke, then you can read through this thread (and 16 year old me talking like a clown) as a starting point. Kalapse crash landed a thread once too, but I can't find the thread.

This is true, but it is funny that when you make that previous statement, that you pointed out someone who IS an ace year in year out.

Cliff Lee is a stud

I was listening to this discussion yesterday as well, did you hear the guy who called in and pointed out Tulo's (RIDONKULOUS) home and away splits when Bernstein was talking about how Tulo is having a way better season than Alexei?

It was quite funny to hear the wind get taken out of Bernsteins sails. Hard for him to argue Tulo when he is so bad on the road, even when he is so insane at home(cough*coors field*cough)

That might be the most classic thread in Soxtalk history. We were so adorable as 16 year olds.

I basically told C.Rector to suck it.

Also, that thread is hilarious 10 years later considering how long Buehrle's stuck around. He's been the staple for durability.

No doubt about it, that is a Hall of Fame Soxtalk thread.

You're such a fan but yet you can't even spell his name right. I'm disappointed in you Greg.

Just lazy. Check all my other posts and I bet I never spelled Buehrle wrong.

My favorite Sox of all time.

a.) Buehrle/Konerko tie. b.) Chet Lemon. c.) Frank Thomas. d.) Gary Peters.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 07:03 AM)
I liken Buehrle to Russel Wilson. The book on pitching is that you have to throw 94+ in order to make it as a pitcher. The book on QBs is that you have to be 6' 2" or taller to make it.

They are the exceptions to the rule, but I don't believe that they disprove the rule. I don't disagree that an elite fastball or height are vital components to success. It's not impossible to succeed if you don't have them, but you have to be nearly perfect in all other aspects of your game in order to make up for those shortcomings. There aren't going to suddenly be dozens more Buehrles and Wilsons coming along. It's just way too difficult to succeed with their skillsets and they are unique men.

I just saw this and I like this comparison.

Going for #11

3 scoreless.

Edited by flavum

1-0, Cardinals going to 7th.

Jays had a chance in the 6th. No dice.

Buehrle-2.04 ERA

7 ip, 5 hits, 1 er, 5 bb, 6 k

Needs two runs and two bullpen innings to get a win.

Jays need two in 7th to get 56 the W. Otherwise, at least his ERA went down.

No win today. He'd have to beat the Yankees twice, the Orioles, and Chris Sale in order to get #200 against the Sox.

Who is an ace and how many teams have had them?? Shields, for example, is no more an ace than Buehrle. How many teams have aces? I guarantee you not many, or you could argue that many guys you might pick are not aces. Remember Cliff Lee? Some years he was an ace; some years he sucked. I contend there are not many clear cut aces in baseball since Buehrle emerged as a stellar pitcher.

Yeah, James Shields is definitely not an ace.

Here are some aces for you currently in the league:

Sale, Darvish, Scherzer, Hernandez, Kershaw, Wainwright.

After that you got guys like Fernandez, Strasburg and Tanaka.

There are probably no more than 10 "aces" in all of baseball at any given time.

So if he struck out Trout and got the win on Saturday night, he would be?

does not compute

This may be the worst post you've ever had.

Chris Sale, 2012-today - 68 G, 67 GS, 458.2 IP, 2.94 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 9.3 K/9, 2.1 BB/9, 0.9 HR/9, 4.5 K/BB, 11.7 fWAR, 15 bWAR

greg, just...no
