In terms of catching prospects, what about Illinois catcher Jason Goldstein? He's listed at 6 foot 210 pounds and is catching one of the best pitching staffs in the nation.

 

He's hitting .302 8 HRS 41 RBIs but does have 7 errors...

 

i have been looking into him in the last 2 weeks. that was when many were writing about Jay and the team. i wanted to see who else on the team that might slide into the later rounds. his hit to K's ratio's are not that bad. i can live with a weak avg cat if he can produce in other ways.

I've heard he's on their short list, whatever that means. I think he could be a 2. Had he pitched in the Illini rotation all year, he might have gone in the top 5 for slot, which would be $1 million-plus over what he's going to get.

BPA is not a myth. BPA does not equal consensus number 1's Harper/Strasburg. Kyle Schwarber was not the top guy on the board by most all accounts last year when the Cubs took him, but he was the best mix of all factors. That doesn't mean he was the consensus BPA, he was their BPA through a mix of the factors you listed and more. Talent, polish, signability, risk as a player, risk in injury, floor, ceiling, tools, etc. are all evaluated to make a BPA. It all depends how each organization values each of the things above. The BPA argument is rooted from the idea that you don't take a specific position because it is an organizational weakness but instead, take the player that provides the most value at that time regardless of position or need.

Here is a name.... Chris Cullen. He is a prep catcher from the state of Georgia. He is 6'5 200lbs and he bats and throws from the right side. His swing kid of reminds me of Jeff Bagwell.

I'm not overly concerned about 6'5" at catcher. Flowers is 6'4", Kevan Smith is also 6'4". If he has the athleticism then I don't see that extra inch as a major factor.

Joey Lucchesi who transferred from a JC in California this year who has a 3.01 ERA with over 80 Ks (Leading the conference). He is pitching right now against Belmont

 

Alex Winkelmann who has been with the team all 3 years has a 3.69 ERA and exactly 80 Ks (2nd in the conference)

Carson Fulmer's final start of the regular season before the draft went pretty well....

 

CG, 2 H, 1 R, 14 K.

 

He allowed 2 hits in the 1st inning....and no hits after that. I think he secured himself as the NCAA strikeout king. 132 Ks in 95 IP. No one has put up 132 or more Ks in 14 starts or less since Marcus Stroman in 2012. A 12.42 K/9, which hasn't been seen since........Carlos Rodon in 2013 when he had a 12.51 K/9.

 

Not bad company for Mr. Fulmer. Kylie McDaniel thinks he's a no-brainer top 10 pick.

while that is a daring and bold move, and it will address the catching position. here is a question to think about. how long will it take for him to develop to move up???

 

the sox needs their pick to be challenging for a position in at least 2 yrs. the sox have or will have glaring holes in a yr or 2.

Just to inform all the draftniks in here... the draft is by far the biggest thing we do at FutureSox each year (in terms of the amount of content, time invested, and traffic to the blog). And we're getting geared up right now! First pre-draft pieces will start showing up next week, and we'll probably have somewhere around 7-8 different articles from at least three different writers.

re Happ, just like DJ Stewart. the pitchers weren't pitching to him, and i think he started to press, there was talk that he is letting the pressure of the draft affect his approach. too bad, i had him in my preseason fav's.

 

also, i really am not that much of a fan of Bentendi, for starters i really hope he grows. he is like 5'9 a generous 5.10.

Apparently, he is a legit CF, too. I just always take college HRs with a grain of salt. After all, Beckham hit 28 HRs his junior year.

 

But looks like a great combination of power-speed and strong eye at the plate. Plus the ability to play CF.

I would be very pleased with this were the pick, you can have catch but if the bat is really something he can go to the OF or 1B
