WHITE SOX MAKE THREE ROSTER MOVES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Saturday, August 30, 2014

CHICAGO – Prior to today’s split doubleheader vs. Detroit, the Chicago White Sox purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Chris Bassitt from Class AA Birmingham and recalled left-hander Eric Surkamp from Class AAA Charlotte to serve as the 26th man for the doubleheader.

To make room for Bassitt on the 25-man roster, the White Sox optioned right-handed pitcher Scott Carroll to Charlotte following last night’s game.

Bassitt, 25, went 3-1 with a 1.56 ERA (6 ER/34.2 IP) and 36 strikeouts in six starts with Birmingham in 2014. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Bassitt suffered a broken right hand prior to the start of the season and did not debut with the Barons until July 29 after pitching in three rehab games with the Arizona League White Sox.

He threw 16.0 consecutive scoreless IP over three starts from August 3-15 and limited the opposition to a .206 (26-126) average with the Barons.

Bassitt was selected by Chicago in the 16th round of the 2011 draft out of the University of Akron. He will wear uniform No. 61.

Surkamp, 27, is 1-0 with a 6.91 ERA (11 ER/14.1 IP), five holds and 11 strikeouts in 23 relief appearances over two stints with the White Sox this season. He also has gone 4-5 with a 4.69 ERA (41 ER/78.2 IP) and 86 strikeouts in 18 games (11 starts) with Charlotte this season.

Carroll, 29, is 5-9 with a 5.28 ERA (63 ER/107.1 IP) in 22 games (16 starts) with the White Sox this season.

The Sox 40-man roster is at 40.

sorry to see Carroll sent down. at least he can say he made it to the "show"

not a lot of players can say that.

He'll be back in like 2 days.

Another good move. Carroll got his big league pension, thank goodness for him, but his stuff is so ordinary to bad, it's sad. Please don't bring him back up. Sox getting rid of some dead weight? This is good.

Wilkins, Sierra and Snodgress in the clubhouse, per Merkin

Sierra would be in the clubhouse regardless. Fake DL stints likely mean the player stays with the team.

Snodgress trying to earn a spot for next year I see.

at least the Sox now have 2 lefties in the bullpen (to walk the ONE guy they were brought in to face)

Hopefully he can do what Charlie Leesman could not.

Pretty sure he was in Birmingham.

So does that mean another pitcher is on his way out, or Surkamp is being sent down?

They can add 2 without another trade. I don't think it means anything is imminent, maybe a just in case, or someone wasn't going to be playing today in AAA anyway, might as well come here now.

They can basically have anyone who isn't needed in Charlotte today sit in the big league dugout for a day and it won't matter because they'll be on the roster tomorrow.
