Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon has exercised an opt-out clause in his contract and is leaving the team immediately, according to sources.

The Rays were 77-85 this season. Maddon was 754-705 in nine seasons with the team.

So maybe Don Mattingly isn't safe.

Bad month for the Rays.

Tigers would be smart to give him a call.

Nearly every team in baseball would be smart to give him a call, White Sox included.

I wish we were even close to forward enough thinking to make a move.

True, but we know every team will not, including ours.

The Tigers, and Dodgers should be the first in line. Both teams also have the stones to dump their current managers for someone better, unlike ours.

And both of those teams should be able to come up with the right price, unlike most other teams, including ours.

Friedman just left to go to LA. I'd be shocked if Maddon was going anywhere other than that.

He is obviously going to LA. God that franchise is going to be scary.

It will be the Dodgers.

Yeah, this is straight to LA.

Buster Olney thinks he ends up with Cubs

If I read it right, Friedman leaving the organization triggered this out-clause that Maddon exercised. If I'm understanding that right, it means that if Friedman stayed in Tampa, Maddon's contract had no out-clause.

Yeah, if this ISN'T Los Angeles, it's an upset.

Too bad the Twins hired Moliter he would be good there as well.

That is a stupid clause for a team to put in a contract unless it stipulated he was going to that team.

The Tampa franchise should move anyway.

Is the Texas job open?

Freidman hasn't drafted a decent player in 7 years. With their finances, the writing was on the wall for the Rays.

It just makes too much sense

Ugh, saw a tweet from Toronto sports writer Steve Simmons that there is a rumor at exec level in baseball that he will go to Cubs. Sorry no copy/paste as having phone issues.

It would suck for them to have best GM and Manager

That's the first thought that comes to mind when you think about, but there have been managerial hires that looked just as slam dunk as Maddon & the Dodgers do on the surface that ended up quietly underwhelming.

The Cubs hiring Joe Maddon would be a game changer in my opinion. Man.

Andrew Friedman already on the record today saying they won't hire Maddon

Ken Rosenthal expects him to end up with the Cubs as well
