since i have been gone for something like 8-9 yrs, how have the opener been like, re tickets

We did not get a parking pass, hopefully we are not in the lot 2 miles away.

I am taking the train, however, grills are difficult to bring on the CTA.

As someone who is coming from 180 miles away and doesn't know the city well, would it be wise for me to purchase parking in advance? I've been to plenty of games but usually not ones that will be as packed as this. If I don't pay for a pass in advance how early would be recommended to arrive to ensure parking in the Sox lots? I remember when Frank Thomas had his number retired we ended up having to park a long ways from the stadium and take a shuttle. I'd rather not have to do that again.

how is parking still such an issue and it's clear just from this thread that people are confused, even hardcore fans that post on message boards, about how exactly best to get to the park.

 

Makes me think the Sox have done a really poor job figuring out how to make it simple for folks. They need something better than "take the train".

Years ago I drove to a game with the Yankees in town and the same thing happened to me. We had to park east of IIT, take a bus, and probably got to the park by the 4th inning or so. Never driving to a sold out game again.

 

Luckily, the attendance problems prevent this from being a constant problem.

in the 90's we had to get there around 9 am and still there were alots of people...... just imagine bears tailgating kind of crowd for that game.

Sorry, didn't mean to freak you out. You will definitely find parking, sox usually have 2 big lots they rarely even use on games.

 

I just was hoping to tailgate closer to the stadium.

Just a weber. Plus chairs/tables. It's my first opening day, want to do more than my normal routine of drinking a tallboy on the curb next to someone's pickup truck.

Well, not everyone can park close.

 

My family has been parking on the street in front of Schaller's pump for a long time now. We've never received a parking ticket. It's with I a Mike's walk.

I always suggest to people to buy parking passes when they get the tickets, it tells them exactly where to park. If tailgating we tend to get there two and a half hours prior to game time. That way we have time for traffic as well as waiting in lines to park. I normally go to lot E i believe. It tends to open earlier since they have employees parking there also.

 

Be very careful parking in any lots that are not official lots. I have had friends wanting to save a few bucks and their cars got towed. Also while some people enjoy looking for the free parking, its not worth it, it normally takes to long and you have a nice hike. Now if you have a sticker thats another story.

 

Wish i was going to the game. Do they still allow you to bring food into the park. We would normally grill extra sausages and put them in a bag and bring them in, the see the food and its ok.

My favorite Opening Day was 2006. Would be nice to attend something similar next year.

Parking at the Cell isnt an issue...at all. Not even sure how anyone can argue that it is. Easily accessible, plenty of spots everywhere, usually cheap (especially on Sunday's). Worse comes to worse, park on 31st and walk.

I'll be parking outside gate 2. Right by the exit.

Parking complaints on Opening Day is as much a tradition as fireworks after home runs.

just doesn't help get people to the park. Part of the reason attendance is so high is that at 90% of modern parks parking or public transit is a given. Doesn't really seem like enough people know to just park and take the train. Maybe it's the bad rep the neighborhood has it's a perceived safety thing for many.
