underdiscussed: Avi's is awful on defense

Featured Replies

What is crazy is that Gordo leads the team in DWar with how little he has played.

The other two in the bottom 3 are Eaton and Melky. Before long, Hahn has to realize there is a need for a standout defender in the OF, and Shuck isn't that guy.

Umm, I think if you look at any of my posts, you could change this topic to say the White Sox are awful on defense. It is a huge fault, especially with a team being build around defense. All that said, we are talking small sample size and Eaton is not going to stay in the bottom. Big thing is Micah is going to make errors cause he is young and Melky is passable in left (but not good), Avi is awful (could probably be passable in left or maybe less awful) and well Connor is the same at 3B.

Bottom line, we have few elite defenders and a lot of very bad defenders. That makes for a lousy defense.

Trayce Thompson is the guy that would be the fit but I think they still see some potential their and want him getting regular at bats.

But Hawk said we have the best defensive outfield in the AL? Also interesting to see how bad Semien's defense has been at SS this year.

It's hard to make a decision on how good someone is defensively when we're only 17 games in. The sample size is way too small. That said, Avi is awful in RF.

I think we've talked about Avi's poor defense a lot in the past. But yes as has been said by others it's too early this season to make a complete judgement. That said, he needs to improve big time out there.

He has the physical ability to be a good defender. He is very young and hopefully will become better in time. Some guys it just takes a while to get comfortable out there.

He has been playing OF for at least 7 years (BR) and probably much longer than that. Shouldn't he be comfortable by now?

After seeing how badly Jose Abreu played 1B when he got here, that isn't necesarily true.

IMO, Avi has been going backwards defensively since he was acquired. If you remember, the Sox initially thiought he could be a CF.

I don't think he's ever going to be good with the glove. Just hope when he screws up it isn't at the worst time.

The first time I saw him play, I couldn't believe how bad his instincts were in the field. He's just lousy out there.
