WTF is wrong with them? They are just bizarre.

Worse record than most contending teams & did the same "oh were still competitive" move we did at the trade deadline. Plus, in a number of cases they'd probably be willing to take the palyer.

They are claiming players that will be pulled back. I remember reading about Steve Phillips claiming 200 players. If they want him to stop, they should reward him most of the claims, it would really put the Padres on the spot. Other than that, he is trying to keep the teams ahead of him from getting better. I don't find the harm in that.

Thats exactly why I think its bizarre behavior. They could have potentially screwed themselves even more if one of those teams pulled a "BlueJay" on them and had them take on a guy like Alex Rios with a large remaining contract.

When the Sox claimed Rios, it wasn't just a blocking claim. They were perfectly willing to take on Rios' contract.

That is why he has to only be claiming guys teams just wouldn't dump, although I would love to see the chaos if a team claimed 10 or 15 questionable guys and were awarded their contracts. It would cost a GM his job. They would have to be releasing guys for roster space.

We believe that's what happened and that's what FO can claim happened but we really will never know for sure how that went down.

But I do know that teams could just give a big contract to the Pad's and screw them even more than they already screwed themselves.

I think KW was a little hoodwinked on that one. He was looking to trade for Rios before the deadline, and they were discussing prospects and money eating. I think he was a little taken aback they just let him go, but ultimately, I think you're correct. He wanted him, and the money really wasn't a big problem.

Rios was Jekyll and Hyde. I was ok with that because it was only money

Yeah, I remember Kenny saying he was surprised, mostly because he didn't exactly want to take on the entire contract, but ended up taking it on entirely and it didn't put them in a bad position. That was my interpretation.
