On the heels of Kris Bryant's Rookie of the Year Award and Joe Maddon's Manager of the Year Award, the Cubs are looking to attract big-name free agents to pad their roster for another postseason run in 2016. Rather than downplaying a century of bad luck, however, Maddon believes that the lack of championships will only enhance his sales pitch. November 23, 201510 yr That is something I always figured when it came to someone taking the manager job. Sure, you may fade away like so many in the past but if you happen to be at the helm if/when they win the series you will be god-like revered for the rest of time.
November 24, 201510 yr I think it's a good strategy. I bet a lot of players who have money already, would, all other things being equal, would think it would be cool to be a hero of a franchise for many many many years.

I thought they had 30-35M to spend, they need a CF and a SP, 20 won't get you both in today's market. That could change but its been reported over the last few weeks they are currently sitting at about 110M and expect to end up around 130-140M. Here's a link explaining more. He also didn't have a drat pick attached entering the offseason when everyone thought the Cubs were going to spend but they decided not to. (I think they've got the money to pull it off but also have a few holes that needed to be filled with it).

I bet the Cubs trade Soler for a young pitcher, sign Alex Gordon or Span or a different OF, and bring back Samardzija.
