Great deal for SPAN, his agent really did a job landing $30+ million guaranteed for a 30+ year old coming off injury. Whoever had the idea to post that video of Span in the gym should get a bonus.

 

On the 3 year limit issue, Span's deal it kind of calls the Sox bluff since there's no way Cespedes or Upton sign a 3 year deal, even more so now that Span got 3 years guaranteed. Gotta go 4 years guaranteed imo, and possibly a 5th w/a buyout to beat out other teams. Or offer 3 years frontloaded big time with the 3rd being a player option of lesser AAV.

The last time he played left field was 2009. He was fine there I guess. His defense everywhere else including CF has been suspect(to put it nicely).

Obviously, the Giants got scared off by the prices on the top guys or didn't want to go into luxury tax land.

 

Their biggest problem is that Span and Pagan are both suspect in CF...in that huge stadium.

You'd have to believe if Denard is 100% that he ends up in center, though, with Pagan on a corner.

 

But therein lies an issue with the 2nd/3rd tier guys, you're picking guys with quite a few warts. No guarantees. Just projections based on due diligence.

I just read a report about an hour ago that said he didnt work out.

The Giants are scary f***ing good.

It's going to be quite a battle between the Giants, Dodgers and rising D-Backs out there...with Colorado and SD kind of floating along in limbo and retooling/rebuilding or whatever they choose to call it.

His OBP alone would have been more than welcomed here. Add in the high contact rate with a team who has a low contact rate overall.. we'll see if he's healthy though. I like that move for SF though.

Me too. I would've loved to see if we could get Span and Desmond for somewhere near what Upton/Cespedes would've cost.

In a weird way a case can be made that it kind of does both, and we'll just have to wait and see which scenario ends up having more weight/impact

I don't see this as driving the market higher at all. Span when healthy has been a 3-4 WAR player, and he still put up 1.4 WAR in just 61 games last year. $31 million over 3 years is a drop in the bucket to most MLB teams these days, and even if he just repeats last year's production he'll easily live up to that contract.

It's got to drive it up in some regard imo, or at very least it doesn't help the Sox position. Any healthy FA outfielder now makes the obvious argument that if Span gets that much guaranteed in $$ and years, then I deserve more as in theory I give you a more dependable chance at success.

Meh, with the Giants out they have less leverage now, that has a much bigger impact. And $10-11 million is really not that much, at least not enough to really move the needle, I wasn't expecting Span to sign for $6-8 million per year.

Considering he originally wanted three years and $40-50 million, the actual 3/$35 (with buyout) is about the same percentage lower compared to original expectations Gordon accepted.

 

Both older/more experienced players, both coming off major injuries that dampened their values a bit...more wear and tear in the past in terms of career games played as a risk factor in the nearer future.

Hope so. It's an argument you can bet the remaining FA's will make, but it remains to be seen if it works at all.

I can see some being a bit surprised at the number of years, but what were people expecting Span to sign for? If he was a FA last year he would have been in line for a huge payday, and the injury this year suppressed his cost, but the upside he has when healthy means it wasn't going to suppress it down THAT much.
