Gallardo signs with Orioles, 3 years, $35 million

It just goes to show that fans everywhere can look at their own GMs and say "WTF DUDE! WHY??!?"

Lol, no kidding. Looking at the overall shape of the Orioles (MLB team/farm) makes me feel better about the White Sox.

Dave started off by talking about Gallardo, what he brings and possible concerns if he signs with the Orioles saying “clearly you have to be concerned that if your velocity goes down and strikes out go down is that a problem…to me this is a huge signing they need somebody in the rotation and to get a guy like him with experience is exactly what they need to do.” Dave clearly really likes the Gallardo signing saying “I really don’t see any down side to this at all.”

As for possibly getting Fowler also Dave said “he is a better lead-off candidate then anybody the team has right now…it makes them better heading into spring training.” When asked about giving up draft picks to get guys like Gallardo and Fowler Dave said “this team is poised to win now, the time is now for this club to be able to compete…2 or 3 years from now when the draft pick is ready to play the core of the team may not be here anymore.”

Sure sounds as though Baltimore will sign Gallardo. I know its just a media report but here sure s alot of smoke to not only the Gallardo rumor but with the Fowler rumor as well.

When asked whether Gallardo would soon be joining the team, Duquette said, “we’re trying to upgrade our pitching staff."

“A 13-game winner would do that, right?” Duquette said. “Gallardo’s been a good pitcher over his career. He did well in the National League with Milwaukee, and he also pitched well this year with Texas and he pitched well in the playoffs. That’s why teams would have interest in him.

Duquette also had a few comments on Fowler, though he would not say for sure he is interested in Fowler.

Heyman "Reds believe orioles do have prospects to make a Bruce trade. O's also looking at fowler, alvarez. Likely to add 1 hitter."

Go ahead Orioles, trade for Bruce! :D

I would think most high schools have the prospects to trade for Bruce.

Yeah, I don't get the wording about prospects in these Bruce tweets. Cinci should be giving him away for free.

No doubt guys. I don't see how Bruce is worth any valuable prospects. I see Bruce as more along the lines of possibly worth a mid-twenties flame throwing reliever that struggles with control and has yet to make it above AA.

Heyman is again being used for leverage by one organization/agent or another.

The Orioles also have a reputation for being one of the worst run organizations in baseball. It isn't hard to squint and see them doing something stupid to get another named player in there.

Would certainly seem to me that Fowler is next on their radar.

ORIOLES What is a fair structure for a Yovani Gallardo deal?

I think is a pretty interesting writeup about comparisons between Gallardo and Chen. It gives some potential insight to what the Orioles might be trying to work out with Gallardo and why its seemingly taking so long for a deal to materialize.

I still think the O's were better off with Chen but the article makes a good case for the O's going after Gallardo.

The Orioles have zeroed in on Yovani Gallardo. What if that's not so bad after all?

There are a lot of ifs and maybes up there, and none of them address the obvious counterpoint that, if the Orioles can't really afford to be paying $15+ million for average-ish performance, the best way to avoid having to do that is to draft and develop their own pitchers, which they won't be able to do if they're doing stuff like giving up the #14 pick to sign Gallardo.

The Orioles back is up against the wall big time. The Orioles have spent plenty this off season and that does not include the potential signing of Gallardo and possibly Fowler. How will these signings affect more important players such as Machado and Jones, whom are free agents after the '18 season? Baltimore is a very desperate organization without minor league depth and play in one of the toughest divisions in all of baseball. Boston is on the rise, Toronto will be around for a while and the Yanks will continue to spend their way to contention once they shed some salary over the next two years. The Rays future looks bright with what they have on their major league team as well as their minors. Imo, Baltimore has disaster written all over them for now and the future.

This is cheaper than I would have guessed. The comp pick really hurt Gallardo, IMHO.
