Adam Eaton Leading League in DRS

Featured Replies

I know it's still pretty early, but I think it should be noted that Eaton is currently leading all of MLB with 5 DRS. The move from CF is obviously having a massive positive effect on his defense, and I'm happy Hahn was smart enough to bring in Jackson who, while he needs to start hitting more, has really alleviated the pressure on Eaton on Cabrera to make plays.

It's very strange, bar 2015, there's been a huge disparity between DRS and UZR when it comes to Eaton.

2013 Eaton:

DRS: -2

UZR: -10

2014 Eaton:

DRS: +12

UZR: -3

2015 Eaton:

DRS: -14

UZR: -11

2016 Eaton:

DRS: +5

UZR: -0.3

I'd be inclined to trust DRS a bit more as it has better batted ball data, and the eye test on Eaton this year would say he's been really good defensively.

In April 2015 I specifically remember Eaton misplaying about 5 balls terribly in CF. After that he was money. I have no data to back me up, but I'd be willing to guess if you took away April last year, Eaton was more than adequate in CF. he just started the season in a slump in all facets. People who call him a bad defensive outfielder can't use their eyes to assess a baseball player.

I think he's a pretty good CF, I agree with you that people blew his first month of the season last year out of proportion. I think the problem last year was the defense in the corners.

No surprise at all. Some of us were pointing this out when the idea of signing Jackson came up. Jackson is better than Eaton in CF and Eaton better than Avi in RF. It's academic.

Austin Jackson at -2, somehow.

Now that is retard.

He's playing in loving memory of Drake.

He has been extremely unlucky though.

DRS reference on April 16th? C'mon, dude.

He's barely missed out on 3-4 homers...one, because of the weather/wind at USCF, the other a foul ball down the LF line foul by 4-6 inches that was followed up by a huge two run single up the middle.

I haven't thought that Jackson has looked amazing out there, so I don't know why people are flabbergasted that he doesn't look great in DRS. He's made at least one bona fide mistake, though that may have been after the post was made, I can't remember. Plenty of time for things to even out anyway.

One thing about Eaton that has stood out for me so far is that his arm looks terrible. I don't necessarily mean in terms of strength, but it just looks incredibly unlikely that he would throw anyone out given the chance due to how inaccurate most of his throws have been. Jackson for his part has been more accurate at least in terms of the alignment, but both of them have been just chucking it straight into the ground.

That almost certainly why is he -2.

It's amazing that the Sox have Eaton and Quintana, who are basically Heyward and Lester, for about 15% of the salary.

I wouldn't say Eaton is basically Heyward defensively yet, but I see your point.
