Yadiel Hernandez

Featured Replies

Cuban outfielder Yadiel Hernandez will host a showcase for clubs on May 18, MLBTR has learned. The 28-year-old corner outfielder held a showcase back in February that was reportedly attended by as many as 25 Major League teams but hasn’t held a large-scale workout for clubs since being declared a free agent by MLB on April 21. Hernandez’s age and professional experience in Cuba make him exempt from international spending pools. He’s a left-handed hitter with excellent plate discipline and a knack for contact, and Baseball America’s Ben Badler has previously opined that Hernandez has a chance at hitting 10 to 15 homers over the course of a big league season. He’s a career .324/.449/.487 hitter in 514 pro games in Cuba.

Could be a solid addition to the mix. Not sure what his defense is like, but he checks the other boxes for being a guy the Sox could really use. Not sure how soon he could get to the majors, but I would think he could be available by the trade deadline.

A nice way to acquire some talent without disrupting the farm.

Would be very happy if it happens. Not much chance to add fairly cheap depth without giving up anything mid season. No idea what price tag is, however.

This could be an ideal situation. Not many guys are going to be available for just cash, though with Avi starting to hit, the need for another OF is greatly reduced unless it is someone you can replace Jackson with in CF, and by all indications Hernandez is not that guy.

Avi has created a minor predicament. He was an obvious choice to upgrade the lineup at DH. However, he has been serviceable to date. If we are to upgrade offensively - which I think we need to do - where is our biggest need?

Personally, I still think a power hitter to replace Avi makes sense.

We are also struggling for production at SS. Tho, there are probably even few options available there. If Anderson keeps playing well, he may be our best option at an upgrade there.

He might not be bad to have around but I doubt he would help much this season. He hasn't played in games in a year or more, and MLB is something he hasn't seen.

Wait, I feel like we have had 3 or 4 threads in the past about this guy

We have, but this is new. Nothing wrong with it.

I think you would start taking Jackson's at bats away (not majority but some) as well as Avi's.

Yeah I tend to agree with this. Maybe he can help plug a spot for next season?

I was just making sure I wasn't making things up in my head

Eaton has been fantastic in RF, but if the right bat comes around, who isn't a liability in the field, I wouldn't hate to see Eaton back in CF. Is Hernandez that guy? I have no idea.

I was going to ask before this inning if this was the inning Latos gives up no runs or a bunch and gets knocked out but yet again he gives up one run.

Sox need to not wait til the 7th inning to get some runs before they are too far behind.

A post in search of a thread . . .

Marlins, DBacks, Rockies, and Brewers have shown interest after workout.

Hernandez really does feel more like a 4th outfielder on an NL team, perhaps a starter on a lower-tier squad.

Of course, you could have said the same thing, for example, about Leonys Martin and he's really having a heckuva start to 2016 with the Mariners. Sometimes guys who look like complementary or bench pieces such as Alexei Ramirez will surprise you and the guys everyone is on like Soler, Castillo and Puig end up struggling to put it together or sustain success.
