    2018 catch-all

I'm moving in 3 weeks, and I'm supposed to be taking stuff to storage on my days off but I can't get myself started. I started to today, and then saw all the clutter almost solely caused by my wife who hasn't done much (if at all) to help clear up and immediately lost all my motivation. Most of everything else that's in storage is there in spite of the other people who live in my house.

I don't understand why the Packers gave up their best secondary player. I'm assuming it's the typical Green Bay reason (we don't want to pay him and we'll just draft someone with the picks we've stacked) but if that's it then why not wait for a comp pick?

Completion percentage in the modern NFL is inflated, Trubisky's accuracy seems to either run cold or hot. When it's cold, he will miss WRs downfield (but, and this is key, not usually turn it over) and make a bunch of short completions in the flat or bubble screens. That torpedoes his Y/A, but lately he's been getting big chunks of yardage in the second half.

The Bears have lost 3 games, and they were definite losses since there is no such thing as a "should've won" loss, but despite all their mistakes they were in a position to realistically win any of those games. They will probably get crushed against the Rams but looking at the rest of their schedule, if they can hold their own in the division (Fox was pathetic in this area) playoffs isn't out of the question.

    11 dead at Pittsburgh synagogue

That first picture is from before Obama was president (he denounced Farrakhan during the campaign and Farrakhan isn't exactly a fan of Obama - plus their houses in Hyde Park are literally walking distance from each other) and I don't know how you figure Aretha Franklin's funeral was some kind of Democratic-sponsored event. She was a Black American cultural icon, so that's the crowd who was at her funeral. Black Americans have a complicated relationship with Farrakhan but that's a whole other topic. His anti-Semitism is well known and he's been rightly been condemned for it over and over again.

When Trubisky takes off running there are times when I'm like "GET DOWN SLIDE IDIOT" but he's made 2 linebackers miss by the time I'm able to yell it and he ends up with 31 yards. If he is gonna be one of the best running QBs in the league with significant accuracy issues maybe we should call him Truvicksky.

Trubisky is at times maddeningly inconsistent but he hasn't actually been outright bad for a whole game, and when he's hot he's very hot. He's showing enough for me to think that we're not wasting time with him.

Farrakhan has been disavowed and denounced numerous times a long time ago already. He's not in mainstream politics.

^^See: Rosewood massacre, 1920 Tulsa, 1985 MOVE bombings - this isn't stuff that just started happening. I don't understand how people think we have had some recent decline, and then use things that have either always been happening or were worse in the past (like teen pregnancy and murder rates) as evidence.

What country are you guys talking about? That element has always existed in this country and we've never managed to be rid of them. We don't like to think about it because it clashes with how we like to see ourselves as a society but it's all over history.

The crypto mining bubble finally and mercifully burst a while back and there's some great deals on used high-end GPUs - like a 1080 Ti for under $600. I think I might partake.

The gameplay is the same as the first game (not fond of the "repeatedly press A to sprint" thing Rockstar likes doing for some reason). I haven't figured out the food and water thing yet, like I have no idea what I'm looking at until it starts blinking red and my health starts going down.

Loving it so far. It's got a pretty long intro and it's a couple of hours before it releases you into the world compared to the first game, and I haven't gotten a chance to play with all that yet. I have the Xbox One X version and the 4K HDR looks astounding (not as good as what the PC version will look like when they release that, but incredible for a console).

    2018-2019 Official NBA thread

I read earlier that the Timberwolves don't want to do this trade, and by "Timberwolves" that pretty much means Thibodeau because ownership wants him moved. I really wonder if everyone's on the same page about what Thibodeau is now? What he did in Chicago is, at best, a mirage, and there's plenty of evidence for that now. All he was doing was playing his starters for the entire game to win regular season games and burn his guys out killing their careers while his "defensive system" spread throughout the entire NBA only to be rendered obsolete a couple years later.

Yeah, I figured you meant that when you said "8-9" since there's only 8 seeds in the playoffs.

So is no one falling on the sword for 2018?

If you ask anyone who coaches youth sports they'll pretty much all agree to a person that the parents are the worst part. I can remember this one mom particularly who told everyone in so many words I wasn't shit as a coach (this is a fair criticism honestly, if you think I suck as a coach you're allowed to think that) and that I didn't do anything and wasted her time (this is bullshit, I gave them at least 10-15 hours of my time per week FOR FREE on top of my day job - this actually deeply offended my wife more than me because she could see how much time and energy I was putting into this). But she was the main one who protested when I held practices at noon on Saturday afternoons and tried to complain about me to the commissioner, whose response was along the lines of "he is the coach and practice is when he says it is." She had a problem with the fact that her son didn't improve very much by the end of the year. 1. You bring your son to less than 50% of practices where I do drills with the kids for that specific reason 2. The season is only like 2 months, the fuck 3. The pitching rubber and mound are 45 feet. Your son can throw, on average, 44.5 feet. The only way he'll develop that arm is if he throws more and I left him in games to improve. He didn't, and I'm sorry if I couldn't turn your noodle-armed son into Chris fucking Sale.

I did, at the time, because I use the logic "do it if you gain something if you make it but lose nothing if you fail" but then I thought about it and analytics/probability says that's the correct call. If you fail but score again, you get another shot to go for 2 again to even it up, and that's what they did.

So is no one falling on the sword for 2018?

I would not say that but travel baseball seriously siphons away the pool of available kids, and that gets really expensive. It's hard for families without some sort of means to stay with it for very long. The regular leagues start to atrophy and the kids that aren't as talented start to lose interest. If you're a kid from a lower-income family, basketball is a LOT easier to get into (at least until you get into the debacle that is AAU). That's always been true, though.

So is no one falling on the sword for 2018?

Anecdotally, I was coaching youth baseball until a couple years ago. I loved it, there was a fair amount of interest from kids starting from the lowest ages until the first year they do live pitching, then at age 10-11 (proper "Little League" age) there was a sudden, sharp dropoff in the numbers of kids. I don't know if that was overall participation or just the league I was playing in, but I was really surprised and kind of disappointed to see that. That was the age I taught myself to be a switch hitter so I could swing like Ken Griffey Jr. Also the environment was different from what I remember growing up... we used to ride our bikes to practice by ourselves and our parents were barely involved except as coaches or to come to games, these kids' parents would drive them to practice and watch them the whole time. I would be thinking "GO HOME AND COME PICK THEM UP LATER. DON'T YOU HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO?"

So is no one falling on the sword for 2018?

Honestly this is a structural problem all of baseball is going to have to reckon with when the older fans eventually start dying off and the people who are middle school kids now become full adults. Most of us thirty and fourty-somethings latched onto baseball as kids, but the interest level with today's kids isn't there like it was.
