I may be in the minority but I want nothing to do with Bader, Conforto, or Hays

There was always a decent amount of risk in holding Robert into the season because of his performance and health issues. The unexpected Murakami signing had multiple layers Robert didnt have, opening up the Sox in the Japanese market again, perhaps a better trade return than Robert if he can retain his LH power and OBP from NPB to MLB, more reasons to think the Murakami contract is more likely to cost less with an uptick in season ticket sales and advertising money and the Japanese community attention. They just decided to cut bait on Robert and mitigate that risk he had attached to him. If the Murakami signing is bringing money into the organization it mitigates some of his downsize risk and opens up a chance that a good performance from him could mean a better trade return than they'd get from Robert since OBP and massive LH power is quite valuable. They werent planning on dumping Robert for what they got all along, they just decided to cut their losses , make a little bit on the return because Murakami means more the Sox now than Robert. So yeah it was better for JR regarding money. Robert contract off the books, Murakami Money Maker. JR says MMM delicious !

Sox will use 10 million and JR will pocket the other 10.

Well Getz alluded to the money being redeployed so we may all remain safe for now.

There are still good FA starters available but there is nothing but mostly mediocre to garbage FA outfielders remaining. I don’t see the Sox signing Bader so Hays is probably the best remaining FA outfielder available.

The free agents in our price range are still available.

They were just kindling names out there. No way they sign Bader

I realize that - @fathom lists the players that he thinks Sox will add; I'm listing the ones that I hope the Sox will add. I agree his list is more likely.

That’s going to be the same pile of junk we have seen both Hahn and Getz acquire in the past several seasons.

Well the fact that they needed to trade Robert just to pay Murakami is pathetic in itself, but this is a Jerry Reinsdorf owned franchise we’re talking about.

I’m not disagreeing with you but then how does any of this make the Sox better? There really isn’t an outfielder available that is better than Robert. I guess you could argue Bader after last season but that isn’t likely to continue and I don’t see the Sox going after him. Are they adding one of the top starting pitchers remaining, like a Bassitt?

Clearly you havent paid much attention the arguments as to how the Murakami signing changed the dynamic on how they may have viewed trading Robert.

They feel they need 2-3 pieces for that same 20 million.

Because Getz overplayed his hand and was asking for too much initially. They've been trying to move him for 2 offseason now. Perhaps he anticipated being able to pick up some salary to increase the return package. Mune's signing certainly threw a wrench into the Sox offseason/payroll expectations. We also don't know for sure what the Mets offer was early in the offseason. With Belly finally back with the Yankees, it seems to me the Mets needed to act immediately to secure an OF. This Sox team was never going to be all that great with or without Robert. He was ultimately a sunk cost that wasn't going to be around for the next time the Sox would be good again. Hopefully Getz can use that money to add a few other pieces and they are able to develop some of these former top prospects into something useful.

So they should have just kept Robert then because the reallocation of this $20 million won’t be on anyone of significance.

Who signed already that you think would have been realistic? They also waited because they wanted someone to cave and take on the whole deal.

Probably true, but while there are still some decent starting pitchers left, there is not much left at the other position of need for the Sox. What is left among FA outfielders? Bader, Hays, and Conforto?
