I did an analysis here last year on grandals catcher era vs his backups in his career and pitchers performed better than grandal catching than his back up... this was despite Clayton Kershaw being the dodgers best pitcher and not throwing to grandal all the time.

Tim anderson liked the prior hitting coach, he survived and didn't cry about a new one. Grandal has a better catcher era than his backups for his career. Most of eatons defensive value in his one great year was tied solely to outfield assists. For a guy with just an average arm, that's an anomaly. He was never very good off the bat in center or right, but the sox did a nice job positioning him, he made a couple plays he didn't usually make, and he threw out a lot of guys. A perfect storm. Eaton was a shit center fielder which had a lot to do with Arizonas desire to move him in the first place. He was never expected to be a great defender in the first place and he ended up being worse than expected and now he's old. Defense deteriorates faster than offense on average. .

Couldn't disagree more. The problem with this assumption is it assumes they wouldn't win with dunning at anytime. Playoffs are a crap shoot. Goal is to get there as much as possible to Increase WS likelihood. 4 years of dunning as an ace gives you a better chance than 1 year of lynn being good.
