Hector wrong. Again. - Cruz back with Min
Doesn't TL want Bauer?

Trade Whispers - Starting Pitchers
Agreed. We will improve at 3rd, 2nd, DH, LF, CF, RF, BP, and SP due to player development and new guys. Slight regression is expected at 1st and catcher. SS will be about the same. Anything short of 100+ would be disappointing to me. The regression in our division just makes the whole thing kind of easy.? In spite of the current TL attitudes being frequently expressed...I think some of the lineup and in-game decisions will also add a few W's to the good guys as well.

JR has been very willing to spend money when we are competitive. Many of those spend money moves have blown up like Dunn, EE, LaRoche, Danks, etc. He put big money on the table for some of our success stories like Abreu, Robert, and all the early extensions. He has stayed away from the stupid 10 years at 30 million per year stuff. I don't blame him for not wanting to have all his eggs in one basket. It is just not prudent IMO. Only pitchers with long term deals scare him off and we probably have Danks to thank for that. I am hopeful that RH can find a creative way to attract Bauer in a manner acceptable to JR making an exception. He sure would fit this team to a tee.

I don't want to watch that act again. EE, Dunn, LaRoche, Dye, and Konerko are enough experiences to teach me that lesson. When these sluggers go downhill they go fast. I would rather watch Vaughn struggle a bit while improving over time. I prefer using Yermin until Vaughn is ready. Spend the money on starting pitching.

Garrett Richards to Boston, 1 year $10 million.
Need to settle the DH and catcher issues but I think this is the correct take on where we are today.

The Wainwright to the Cards Thread
We let Mark Buehrle walk so I guess it can happen.

Thank You Jerry Reinsdorf!
The subject being discussed as usual is JR's cheapness. This organization has never been run by big money ownership. Which one of the owners I mentioned do you feel was the big spender. Remember...this is about spending money... not the most fun. We all would agree that Veeck was the most fun. Most of the WS owners have run the club on a shoestring. JR has run the club like a business and that hasn't been all bad. JR has done many aggravating things like his early TV moves but all in all he has had his moments IMO.

Thank You Jerry Reinsdorf!
I've had 6 owners (Grace Comiskey, Dorothy Comiskey, Bill Veeck, John Allyn, Arthur Allyn, and Reinsdorf) since being a fan. Hoping to see number 7 in the not too distant future. What's really sad...JR is the best of the bunch.

Sox vs. Yankees Comparison
One of these days JR is going to surprise all of us in order to repay us for our patience.

The Wainwright to the Cards Thread
Sounds like they must be doing something right if they win while not getting into overpaying. If you trust your talent evaluators they can help you find affordable talent while not overspending on the new flavor of the hour.

Help Me Understand fWAR
Can there be a hometown bias like in calling a batted ball a hit instead of an error?

Help Me Understand fWAR
I think I saw that play.?

The Wainwright to the Cards Thread
Yep...pretty much so.?

Hank Aaron Passes Away, was 86.
I read that Hank played against 22 teams in his career including 19 games against the WS. We are the only team of those 22 that he failed to hit an HR. Thought that was an interesting piece of nostalgia.

Jameson Taillon traded to Yankees
Taillon looks a far cry from a sure thing with 2 TJ surgeries and 3 years since doing anything. The 4 guys going to Pitt look like nothing as well since none are coming from Tohanp 10 Yankees farmhands. If I was a betting man I don't think this deal helps anyone.

Sox vs. Yankees Comparison
I like this format. You mention the Yanks have a 50+ projected fWAR. Do you know the WS projected fWAR? I tried to find it myself but failed in my search.

Help Me Understand fWAR
That's the thing that perplexes me. These numbers are arrived at by someone (who knows who) that make judgments about many things that are not quantifiable. Two announcers in the TV booth disagree on if a play was an error or not as an example. We as fans argue that player A is better than player B and use WAR as our argument. If it were really that easy trades would be a slam dunk. I want your 3 WAR player so here is the equivalent. But obviously, no one seems to think of WAR as being empirically correct unless it happens to suit their point of view.

Help Me Understand fWAR
As an old school baseball fan, I relate to home runs, rbi's, sb's, runs scored, etc... WAR seems to track everything that happens everywhere on the field and grade it. How is this possible? Wouldn't that require dozens of watchers trained to score performance? It seems impossible to have all those scorekeepers using a fair and unbias system since we have trouble agreeing on an error call for example. Jose Abreu won the MVP but 3 position players had better WAR scores...why did Jose win? This question is not meant to be a clever way to say WAR is somehow BS. Some of you put great stock in it but I have trouble understanding why you value the opinions of people you don't know. I do see a usefulness for baseball executives having their own in-house grading systems but the average fan is lost when he tries to grasp what is WAR. Please try and explain in a clear non-condescending manner as I am sure many would like a better grasp of this subject.

No room for Kopech means Katz has fixed Cease and Lopez...very impressive.

Trade Whispers - Starting Pitchers
LaStella had a war of .8 compared to Madrigal .5 according to MLB stats. Not much for a 6.6 million salary differential. Have you ever considered being a Yankee or Cubs fan? When everything our team does is "bi***" worthy it can't really be much fun for you.

Trade Whispers - Starting Pitchers
Yeah...those .340 hitters will mess you up every time.

Trade Whispers - Starting Pitchers
Yeah that all-star year where he hit 19 homers instead of his usual 3. What was that about?

That remains to be seen.
