GT: Tigers (27-52) @ White Sox (39-42), July 3
poppysox replied to soxfan49's topic in 2019 Season in Review
Cease learned a bit about himself today. His nerves had him on edge and he saw that he could still beat a major league team. I liked the pace at which he pitched and his stuff looked really good. Was really good with his off pace stuff. Kind of lost it whenever he tried to throw the fast ball through the wall. Learning to be a major leaguer is all part of the maturation process. I'd like to see Robert & Madrigal come up and get their feet wet as well. Every one of these future core need some time to feel comfortable at this level. Rather do that this year when the wins and losses are less important. We can compete next year. -

Detroit announcers quite impressed by the expert execution of the squeeze bunt. -

Cease in line for the W. I know some of you don't care about wins & losses but they work for me. -

Nice when a power guy can also run a bit. -

Detroit announcers were giving a detailed analysis of McCann swing changes. Bottom line...he's a different hitter than with them. -

He is a very serviceable and versatile utility player...nothing more. -

Let's sweep the series! -
Colome remains with White Sox, who always had ample interest in him

Hahn might get us a little better than reasonable. When he has something good to sell...Hahn does very well. Sale, Eaton and Q deals show Rick is no pushover when dealing from strength. -

If they don't give Detwiler another start there ought to be an investigation. -

Detroit is crapola and Cubs are beatable. When the going gets tough...the tough get going. -

Would love to go into the AS break with an above .500 team. -

Agreed! -
I'm anxious to see him pitch again. Him being something would be catching lightning in a bottle.

When your lack of a closer is what stands between your team and a playoff run...the value goes up. -

Only takes one team to think Colome is the answer to their closer problem. Two arguing over him would be even better. Don't at all mind keeping him for our own run next year. This ends well no matter what Rick does. -
It is interesting that if you go to White Sox official web site they tell me who leads the club in batting average, home runs, stolen base & rbi's. I can't find anything that tells me who is leading in any of the advanced stat races. My point is that the average baseball fan relates to stats we've grown up with. I see advanced stats as additional evaluation tools but they don't make obsolete the traditional yard sticks that make up the triple crown or win & losses and earn run averages. Is there really such a thing as a WAR monster player with poor traditional stats? For me...WAR has helped guys like Sanchez & Garcia show their value a little better than just traditional stats.

I would like to see Robert and Madrigal join Cease asap. Use the remainder of 2019 to acclimate these three key pieces to the major league game. Giolito, Jiminez, Mancada along with Anderson all needed time to adjust to the faster game after being promoted. I don't want to waste the first half of 2020 for this process. Use free agency and trades to acquire two decent starting pitchers and a right fielder. We can compete for the division in 2020 as Kopech, Dunning and Rodon get their footing following their respective surgeries. These players have all shown advanced skills and don't need to be treated with such kid gloves. Daryl Boston has been working with Eloy on his outfield play and it shows. Boston can work with Robert while McEwing works with Madrigal. Both players would be immediate upgrades to our current team and it speeds the acclimation time to the big leagues. Robin Yount skipped the minor league stint and joined the big league club at 18 years old. Worked out pretty well I would say.

Listen...yes. Never hurts to listen. Only a gross overpay should be listened to for very long however IMO. -

Jared Mitchell in 2009 drafted by White Sox over Mike Trout wasn't a high-lite either.
