I saw that in the Trib, and that ESPN was either paying like no money or very little or Rome was paying them - just because he wanted to crack the Chicago market. They cut two (somewhat) decent shows for that schlock - and your comment about "coast" shows - never thought of that way but you are right - local stuff gets less and less because this syndicated s*** is cheaper for the local station and by far less work - and it all begins to sound the same so quickly...

Some idiot named cubs4life or something is calling you out by name on the MLB WS board - my personal advice - ignore it/him/her

I have very, very unimpressed by Jim Rome and think anyone who wants to a be a "clone" and live "in the jungle" seriously needs to get a life.

just paid a few bucks for this from the Tribune archives - hey, blast the Sox for what they have done, not for what they have not done - which was, they did not fire Torborg! Sox brass stepped aside for Torborg Chicago Tribune (Pre-1997 Fulltext); Chicago, Ill.; Oct 13, 1991; Alan Solomon, Chicago Tribune.; Abstract: The White Sox-Jerry Reinsdorf and Ron Schueler-could have kept Jeff Torborg from leaving Chicago. Full Text: Copyright Chicago Tribune Co. Oct 13, 1991 The White Sox-Jerry Reinsdorf and Ron Schueler-could have kept Jeff Torborg from leaving Chicago. But it would have kept a man both respected from fulfilling a dream. Torborg said Saturday that after he agreed to terms to become the manager of the Mets last week, he had "a beautiful" conversation with Reinsdorf, the owner of the Sox. "He said he kind of wished he hadn't given permission," Torborg said. And if Reinsdorf hadn't given permission? "Then I wouldn't have gone anywhere," Torborg said. But he said he wouldn't even have known the Mets were interested if Schueler, the general manager, hadn't told him. "I told him, `Schu, I don't want to go anywhere. I'm really happy here,' " Torborg said. "He said, `Just think about it. Tell me tomorrow.'" The next day, Torborg asked whether his situation with the Sox was secure. He said Schueler replied: "We want you to stay." But they agreed Torborg owed it to himself to listen. The rest happened very quickly. Is there a sense you're leaving a job undone? "Yeah," Torborg said. "But this was an opportunity, almost like a dream for me. I worked out with the Mets in '62, out of college, in the Polo Grounds, on two occasions. Rogers Hornsby behind a cage, saying, `You can't hit like this.' He was right. "But I got my first major-league hit at Shea Stadium. Walter Alston brought me to my first All-Star Game as a bullpen catcher there in '64. It occurred to me standing there yesterday. . . . I walked out on that field and thought about those feelings." But what if permission had been refused? What would have happened then? "I don't know how I would've reacted, to be honest," Torborg said. "I wouldn't have had any choice." But the permission came, and the Mets came up with what he wanted-four years, guaranteed. The generally accepted estimate over the term will approach $1.9 million. The decision was easy, but not without thoughts of what he was leaving behind. "Those players mean so much to me, as does the coaching staff," Torborg said. "I'm going to call 'em all. In fact, I was going to start tonight, calling Pudge (Carlton Fisk) and Ozzie (Guillen). The two captains." Now, with his wife, Susie, he's back in suburban New York. "We were riding home last night from the press conference, and it was raining," Torborg said. "It took us two hours to get home. And the two of us looked at each other in the car and went, `What have we gotten ourselves into here?' "Then we said, `But at the end of this trip, we'll be in our own home.' "

from baseball library October 11, 1991: The Mets hire Jeff Torborg as manager. Torborg resigned as manager of the White Sox to take the position with NY Mets... towards the bottom of the page is that quote - Torborg left us on his own, we never fired him
-
My recollection is that Torborg was not fired - he quit on his own to be near his mother in NY -

I may never eat movie popcoirn again, CK. Thanks, I guess.

The guy has been dead for 40 years. People can claim anything the want and it can never be confirmed or denied. For those of us who were alive when he was murdered, it remains one of the worst days in American history in our personal experience. Nothing said now will alter anyone's opinion of him or of his administration at this point. For those for whom the Kennedys are a cottage industry, whatever.

I do not know Steff personally. HSC is a very special friend of mine. And I know who she knows in the offices and on the team. For the KW situation: what was reported here last week was confirmed to me by two different stock holders in the Sox. Why it has not happened yet no one understands. The whole situation is unusual, down to the arrest of KW's two sons, including the release of the name of an arrested juvenile, an unusual if not illegal practice in most states. As for the insults directed against Steff and HSC, I resent those insults. Some very insulting things have been posted. It is not called for. This entire forum should not be a place for the nasty exchanges of personal insults that we are seeing today. If nothing else, the firing of KW was being considered and seemed like a done deal. That is fact, as I have it separately from what Steff and HSC posted, from two different stock holders in the White Sox. If it does not happen at all, we were informed by HSC and Steff of something that was considered by many in the Sox organization to be a done deal. Things that have been close to being done sometimes fall apart. If it does not happen, then all HSC and Steff have done is share information of something that was a mighty strong possibility with us, some of whom are not perhaps worthy of their insights and information. I am making a strong stand by the side of HSC and Steff. There is not a better friend in the world than HSC and she would never steer anyone wrong. People may think what they wish. I stand at the side of HSC and Steff and thank them for treating this forum with a maturity that has not been returned in its entirety to them.

I never thought we should send him down on the basis of his defense - as we have seen just now -

first of all - this is America - we have 2 people arrestred, no one convicted arrest does not equal guilt you refused to read the vine story and would guess at what it means - your mom was always home - you sit and judge and condemn and decide who is good and who isn't - when you are not in full possession of any facts -- when your vine goes - it will go -
-
read the story of the Vine - it is not long - it is not what you think at all - primary material is different than the guesses about it
-
thank God I was and am always such a good person

Albert Belle was simply not a HOF player. Maybe if he played a few more years or maybe this or maybe not - he was very, very good but not HOF, regardless of what he did or did not do with the media.

And here my grandson and I watched veggie tales last night and my grandson saw your avatar and identified it as Jonah - now I read the tiny print and see your identification - and you are calling my grandson a liar! Yes, the vine is one of the essentials point of Jonah.

or not. Has been status is hardly something to worry wbout given the strength of sales of his last album, soundtrack, movie, and record produced for another artist, let alone the awards that have come his way - Weird Al has the parody on the album, just won't be a video - a loss to all society (I love Weird Al's stuff, Eat it and Amish Paradise still crack me up) but - I won't lose any sleep over it either.
-
My Giants friends were not at all unhappy to see Baker go. Something about wearing out his pitchers... among other poor decisions
-
You have the veggie tale Jonah as your avatar - read the book of Jonah. Your distinctions between "good" people and others is something not supportable by the book of Jonah or the other books in which Jonah is normally contained. Nor by psychology, nor by real life.

you can preface anything with ifs - if we had no injuries in 2001... if we had more injuries in 2000... if I had won the Big Game and bought the team from JR... if if if only I had more talent than Joe Di Maggio and played my whole career with the Sox... if the Sox win 100 regular season games and then 11 more in the post season - if we are a move away from the Julio Cruz mid-83 acquisition or the mid-00 acquiring of Perry and Graf... if if if
