GAME THREAD 7-8-2005 SOX vs A's

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 09:08 PM) The thing is, in a way, it's funny that you knew Timo was going to be out once he started to go for 2nd. It's one of those things where there's that player who always seems to just be able to piss you off, no matter what they do. Congrats to Timo though for being 3-3 tonight. At least he's making solid contact. I hate Timo, but he would have been a 100 times better choice to play behind Pods tonight. He does have a good ability to hook the ball to the right side. That's what we needed. He's got two hits that way tonight. -

I'm a Willie fan, I think he can be a very useful player, but those were two terrible ABs. He did a good job taking pitches letting Scott get into second, but after that his approach was very questionable. In the first AB, up 2-0 in the count with Pods on second. The first pitch he sees is high and outside. -- No reason to swing at that, you can't hook it , or put it on the ground. -- Result flyout to left. In the second AB, up 3-0 in the count with Pods on second. The first pitch he sees is a sinker on the inside corner. He's either going to pound it into the ground to the 1B or foul -- SWING you dips***. -- The second pitch he sees is another sinker middle in. Swing and you put that one in play on the right side 80% of the time. Willie takes both pitches (was he hoping Scott would take third?) He fouled off one more. then struck out looking on a close pitch. But you can't take those first two strikes. -

Why is Hawk laughing about TIMO's terrible defense? -
QUOTE(MurcieOne @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 06:24 PM) This guy kinda reminds me of Anthony Webster just with power.... am i really far off? Webster is .272/.313/.438 at High-A compared to Young's .261/.357/.528 at AA. Webster is also older than Young.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 01:02 AM) Payton to Oakland for Chad Bradford http://www.projo.com/redsox/content/projo_...on.22f9127.html At least we've still got Miguel Olivo Freddy Garcia to show for it. Also I think this might mean Billy sends Byrnes out of dodge to Houston for Chris Burke, as Gammons suggested on BBTN.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 12:27 AM) FWIW Pods is 3rd in the AL in RF and 4th in ZR. I know. Like I said, I rely on my eyes too. And my eyes say he has played a bunch of singles into doubles, outs into hits, and has an absolute noodle arm. I'm most disappointed in how he plays balls that are sure hits. I thought coming into the season that he would get to those qiuckly, and hold runners to less bases, but that's just not the case. Runners are always thinking extra bases when the ball is on the ground near pods. So average at best defensively.

QUOTE(3E8 @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 10:57 PM) Not sure how the stat is calculated but Podsednik leads all AL left fielders and is second to only Brady Clark in defensive win shares for left fielders. But I've seen him take bad routes so maybe it can't account for balls you don't get to. Win shares are based on Pythagorean record, so players on winning teams have more win shares. Brady Clark is ahead of him because he plays Center field, and CFers accumulate more chances. Pods might also be higher on the list because he occasionally play CF There's no freely available defensive metric that I trust completely. UZR has been taken underground (or should I say purchased by the Cardinals.) The sabr-centric(boston, LA, OAK) baseball teams all have their own systems, that seem to be similar. (gammons mentioned Payton going to LA or OAK. I assume that's because they value his defense more than the other teams). Defensive Win Shares would probably be one of the last things I would use. ZR is the best freely available defensive metric, but it's far from perfect. I like to use an amalgam of ZR, RF, FRAA, and my own personal observation.

QUOTE(Benchwarmerjim @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 10:38 PM) What were the other roster moves to fill their spots ? Matt Murton (.342/.408/.498), who they got in the Nomar deal. He was tearing up AA for the D'Jaxx. And another OFer Adam Greenberg (.275/.384/.418) for the same team. They've also got Felix Pie(.304/.349/.554) down there. That's one helluvan outfield that they had down there. -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 11:31 PM) When Valido was drafted he was thought of as major league ready defensively. I figured it was just a typical bs hype line but I remember seeing him play a few games and sitting there going damn. The one thing all of the Sox good middle infield prospects have in common is that they are silky smooth defensively. They all have mental lapses on the more routine stuff and have to work on consistency, but at the same time they all have good range and arms and in Valido's case he is a very smart defensive player. I saw a few times where he made some real heady plays. Of course my favorite thing watching was down in WS when Gonzo and Lopez were a double play tandem. Could lord could you see some plays made there. I always thought that Lopez was considered the defensive wiz of the bunch. If what you say about Valido is true, he's really putting himself on the radar this season. -

QUOTE(Randar68 @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 10:59 PM) As of today, Valido is too low, and Nick Lemon is about 20 spots too high, IMO. Nick Lemon is a better prospect than Harrell, Russell, Cunningham, Brooks, Andy Gonzalez, etc? Where is Jenks? Lemon was a joke as dan alluded to. He's my adopt a prospect because I absolutely hated the draft pick last year. Valido I put that low because I'm completely unsure of his defense. What's it like? I've admittedly never seen the kid play. I thought I remembered him being the least highly thought of in terms of glove of our middle infield prospects. I see he only has 7 errors, but that means nothing to me. -

Bruce Levine reported this in between games, but I couldn't find confirmation on the net. Rowand's not exactly having a great season, but he's still far and away better than CPat. Cubs fans are still never gonna admit who's the better player though. -
QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 09:45 PM) There's a Cubs suck thread, but some reason it's not used. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...92&hl=cubs+suck Their Suckitude is implied. It didn't need any attention drawn too it by a thread.

Terrence Long = Timo Perez

I should add, that he was 13-0 with a 1.21 ERA after the ASB last year... I will guarantee he won't match that this year.

Through 18 starts last season, Santana was 7-5 with a 3.89 ERA, 29 walks and 125 strikeouts. courtesy of the StarTribune Last season he was coming off an injury, and was terrible to start the season. QUOTE(chi-guy2 @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 07:49 PM) those are pudges stats right? No Mike Piazza. Because, when you have a point to make you should bring up a player in a different league who plays a completely unrelated position.

QUOTE(Winnin Ugly @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 07:47 PM) Rob Dibble had this to say Baseball wants the All-Star game to have meaning? I don't get it. If the game means so much, why are some of baseball's best players not in the game? Derek Jeter just lost out on the internet vote to Scott Podsednik. That never should have happened. And Michael Young is more deserving than Jeter??? Don't make me laugh. If I were starting a team right now, the first player I'd take would be Jeter. No one is more clutch in big games than him, no other shortstop in baseball has more championships, and no other shortstop has to play in a tougher media town. You'll never find a better person to represent baseball than Derek Jeter. His numbers easily warrant him being in Detroit, and the fact that he had to be on the list of five players that had to beg for votes is a disgrace to the game. First, the fact that home-field advantage is decided by this game is a joke. Second, can you imagine an NBA All-Star game without Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson? Neither can I, and Jeter is the Jordan of baseball. Third, if this game means so much to the outcome of the World Series, then put the best players out there on the field and forget the "player from every team" concept. Some teams don't have All-Stars, and fans don't want to see those players anyway, especially if they don't deserve it. If you want to do that stupid internet vote, let the fans of those non-deserving players vote their player onto the team, that way, when some team doesn't have a player, only the fans are to blame. The All-Star game is a joke, especially when the best players are not going to be there. Derek Jeter is better than the All-Star game. It makes me sick that he won't be there. I don't think Pods should be there, but this quote made my day. I love hearing the ESPNers get all up in arms about a Jeterless ASG.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 07:41 PM) Ask yourself this...would you say a guy is an all star starter if he's hitting .259/.317/.430 with 9 home runs and 36 RBIs? That's not an AL OFer. Basically your argument is that Hey theres another crappy All-Star. Pods should go. Gimme a break.
-
Ask yourself this, Would Podsednik deserve to be in the ASG with his current .289/.363/.337 and 41 SB with the Sox 5 games under .500? No F'n way. You guys are letting the Sox great record cloud your vision. He's 20th out of the 21 qualified LFers in terms of OPS. He's in the middle of the pack in avg, and OBP. -- He's an average at best defensive OFer. Essentially he's a one tool player. He has speed. That's it. That's not an All-Star.
