  1. I'd like to add. Who the hell was our "long man" in '05? Did we not win 99 games? Who the hell was our "long man" in '06? Did we not win 90 games? It seems to me that carrying a "long man" for the sake of carrying a "long man" is part of the problem, not the solution. If you've got 3 or 4 respectable bullpen arms, and you need 6 to fill out a major league bullpen, what is the point in carrying #7? QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 11:55 AM) From watching him start. I think he will do well in the bigs as a starter. One game against the Cubs makes you a starter? How Felix Diaz these days?
  2. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 11:52 AM) Hes going to be a solid starter in the near future He has a WHIP of 1.64 above AA. How the hell does that translate into success as a starter?
  3. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 11:35 AM) It's because he's the best candidate in the organization at "long man." If not for the second game of the season against CLE and the Cubs' Sunday sweep avoider, he would be history too. The only solution is to flip-flop him with Gavin Floyd, Lance Broadway, Heath Phillips or Charles Haeger. Maybe it would work, maybe it wouldn't. He has definitely shown some flashes, though. Floyd and Broadway have had better success at AAA, but I think they'd both suck just as hard. Egbert, on the other hand, with his ability to keep the ball in the park, limit walks, and strikeout batters at a respectable rate, all while not possessing a terribly high ceiling, would be my definition of the "best candidate in the organization at 'long man.'"
  4. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 11:24 AM) Well...at least they weren't dumb enough to call up Gio. But they were dumb enough to get infatuated with Nick Masset, who is still inexplicably on the roster.
  5. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 11:06 AM) Doesnt matter. Owens should start in leadoff every day to show that it shouldn't cost $1M to $3M to get a light hitting, low-OBP speedster to play OF.
  6. First on the list should be Egbert. Throws strikes. Doesn't give up homers. Keeps the ball on the ground. Sounds like a recipe for immediate success.
  7. .270/.315/.370 /huge Sweeney fan. Still needs time.
  8. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 04:44 PM) Apparently you all don't realize that Jerry Owens would be worse out there. I think this is overstated. He's obviously not as defensively inclined as Anderson or even Sweeney, but from what I've seen of him in spring training, he was not a disaster out there. He played the first 4 months of last season in Charlotte's CF before the mandate came down from the front office to give Sweeney some work there. He's been relegated to LF this season not because he CAN'T play there, but because the organization wants to maximize Sweeney's value. And I'm not an Owens fan. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing him in CF, at least until he had a couple of Mack-like screwups out there are proved the scouts here right. Owens needs to prove that he can be a true 4th outfielder, one that can cover CF when Torii Hunter injures his foot next season.
  9. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 02:17 PM) These things also tend to happen occasionally when your average starting OF age is 32, and Jermaine Dye is considered the least injury prone of the bunch. Fixed.
  10. Substitute some names, and this quote could be from Kenny. Something will happen between these two clubs because they are both looking for something, anything, on June 1, and their GMs sound desperate.
  11. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 12:25 AM) I'll guarantee that the Sox will bring back Erstad next season, even if he doesn't meet his option incentives. I agree. Who wouldn't want to bring back the perennially injured below average grinder? If either Pods or Erstad sniffs the roster next season, Kenny needs his head examined and returns to the Krivsky/Bowden level of MLB GMs
  12. If you could live with the strikeouts, I'd expect a the improved batting eye Fields to put up a .230/.325/.400 line right now. That's far from disastrous.
  13. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ May 31, 2007 -> 11:37 PM) Young is on pace for about 18 homers and 60 RBI's, with a .277/.314/.465. I'm not saying that's bad for a rookie, I just get the feeling that if Sweeney or Fields were to put up those numbers a lot of people on this board wouldn't be very happy, that's all. A-Erstad B-Young C-? Konerko. And you have a terribly skewed view of what is a successful rookie season.
  14. QUOTE(pale_hose @ May 31, 2007 -> 09:47 PM) Why not Dye and Lance Broadway for Carl Crawford? McFly?
  15. QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 31, 2007 -> 07:37 PM) DJ, there's someone pitching tonight for BHam that you coulda mentioned. Don't link to his boxscore, or keep talking about him. Remember, we've found out that he can't pitch well with you all over his jock.
  16. QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ May 31, 2007 -> 07:36 PM) To me IMO, Erstad blew his achilles (sp?) This is what I thought initially, but he was holding the front of his ankle/shin.
  17. QUOTE(Texsox @ May 31, 2007 -> 12:36 PM) I just have no energy to care about anyone outside the 40-Man roster and really only can care slightly on 26-40 except for trade meat for mlb ready talent. That sucks because usually 26-40 is filled with dreck. It's a breeding ground for players with promise, but not results, who need to be "protected." The interesting long-term names on the 26-40 is two deep. Sweeney and Fields.
  18. They won't keep him for $6M, but they will for $5. Name a "young SS with upside that's cheap" that you can acquire without giving up anyone off the proverbial 3-year board. Didn't think so. Uribe stays. Secondbaseman are underrated and underpaid because they're relatively easy to find. Hence, Iguchi has little to no trade value. I don't understand the goal to be "more twinlike." Should I bump one of the sign Christian Guzman threads? Crede should be traded, but not to be "more twinlike." The goal should be to get impact players in return. Runs are bad. Get rid of 'em. They're too slow. We need a team full of Erstads. These two are vital in any rebuilding effort. They won't be part of the Sox next division champion, but they will be the only draw to the park in your current plan. Any future plan that includes Darin Erstad as a central figure is fatally flawed. Contreras has a no-trade clause this season, and amazingly there's not a single member of the team that is "getting younger." Shocking, I know. You're wrong. Crede, Iguchi, Pods, Anderson, and Uribe all have little trade value. Dye and Buehrle's value is limited because of their impending free agent status. Contreras is the only player you've listed with a lot of value, and there would be no way you'd make the haul you just listed without giving up Danks and Jenks. I really don't understand your reasoning to get rid of Uribe, but keep Erstad. They're essentially the same type of player. They're below average with the bat, but good in the field at important defensive positions. There is one key exception, however. The CF market will be flooded next year, while the SS market remains predictably barren. And you couldn't get anything more than a bag of balls for Pods. He's not even worth mentioning. Attendence would plummet as the sox limp to a 28-48 second half record, the whole time Jay Mariotti and Phil Rogers write articles weekly about the Cheap Reinsdorf led White Sox. Sports radio rails on the front office for not getting any major league talent in return. They play mock "the kids can play" radio spots. And the Sox don't compete for 4 years, while attendance returns to late-90's levels, causing the Sox to go with a lower payroll, and consequently be unable to afford those free-agent pieces that would be vital to rebuilding effort following a haphazard get-rid-of-the-non-grinders effort. If you can't figure this part out, you shouldn't have made the list in the first place. The Twins have some of the best scouting an developing teams in all of baseball. They also don't rush their players to the point where they're dicked around a bit. And even then players with great minor league numbers don't succeed as quickly as you seem to think. Take a look at Cuddyer's development, or Morneau's, or Kubel's. They all had dynamite minor league numbers, and took about 3 years at the big league level before they started producing (They're still waiting on Kubel.) Instead of making a post about how we need to get rid of all these players to be more twinlike, you could have succinctly put it like this: The Sox need to get new scouting and development people.
  19. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ May 31, 2007 -> 11:36 AM) I think it's total bush league and when Uribe did it to Derek Lee, I thought that as well. Also Jermaine Dye should have told the home plate umpire that the ball hit his bat, not his hand, in WS game 2. Please.
  20. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ May 30, 2007 -> 11:53 PM) I wouldn't mind seeing Broadway in the pen right now, he's a two pitch pitcher and I could see him having success. Neither would the rest of the American League
  21. QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 30, 2007 -> 10:30 PM) That'd be more of a Gavin Floyd role, wouldn't it? Nah, I think Floyd will take over the role of walking in the winning run, or giving up game-breaking grand slams.
  22. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 30, 2007 -> 10:33 PM) Are you sure you're not overvaluing Egbert a TAD? Vazquez? I made my list based on the notion that the next Sox team that can compete for a division title will be 3 years from now. Vazquez is signed through then, and thus, is important. Relievers are less important because they're relievers, which is why there was no Russell on my list (I think he's a future reliever) Starting pitching is the property I value most. And the Sox future success, based on what is already in the system, will mainly hinge on the development (or attrition) of the players I listed. Buehrle was listed lower because he's a free agent, and it's hard to put such high importance on a guy who's not likely to be here next year, let alone in three years.
  23. QUOTE(Brian @ May 30, 2007 -> 09:32 PM) AROD with another amateur moment. Posada pops one up on the infield with 2 outs, AROD running to third yells, "I Got It." Clark, the Jays 3B, thought it was his team mate and let the ball fall and a run scored. MacDonald started jawing with ARod. May see some more photoshop goodness as ARod was standing at third, waving his finger like a woman at MacDonald. I don't see anything wrong with that. I'd be proud if Juan Uribe did it. If Darin Erstad did it, we'd never stop hearing about what a heady ballplayer he is. But since it's A-Rod, a player with infinite talent and the money that goes with that talent, he'll be raked over the coals for being "Bush League."
  24. I'm beginning to think that Eggy could out-perform Masset in the long-man/6th starter role.
