We were just discussing this at SSS Torres is a former first rounder of the Angels. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/T/Joe-Torres.shtml Had TJ(?) surgery in '04 -- Jason will probably know. Wicked control problems but used to have dynamite stuff. I have no clue what he throws, but I think it's reasonable to believe that he and JR Perdew (Don't let this guy get out of the farm system) have found something together. He's allowed only 4 hits in his last 14 IP while striking out 20 and walking 1. That's a year after he waked over 16 batters per 9. Old for his league, but obviously has the pedigree of a major league pitcher, he just could never find the zone. I'm not getting my hopes up, but he's definitely somebody to keep an eye on. Also, Josh Hamilton, on rehab assignment for the Reds, has 3 HR in 2 games. Such an amazing story.

The ten most important players to the future of Sox
Gene Honda Civic replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
In order Danks Gio Egbert Buehrle Vazquez Sweeney Fields Cunningham Jenks I can only manage 9, and after that it's just a crap shoot, and or players who don't figure to be effective for the Sox next division title team. I don't even think you can count on Jenks to be effective 3 years from now, which should be the current (realistic) target for the Sox to be back (fighting) on top again. -
QUOTE(fathom @ May 30, 2007 -> 03:58 PM) Neshek isn't a hidden gem...he's been a well-regarded member of their minors for a few years now. I know for a fact that the BA scouts LOVE him. The last page is full of crap from people who don't understand what kind of talent the Twins have put on the field. Cuddyer, Kubel, Mauer, and Morneau have put up better minor league numbers than anyone the Sox have produced since CLee and Maggs. Liriano, Garza, Baker, Slowey, and Perkins gives them 5 players who've matched (most have exceeded) our best performing pitching prospect of the last 5 years (McCarthy).

QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 30, 2007 -> 03:13 PM) We're beyond David Weathers at this point...we have two relievers now. Last year we had three. This team and organization are sinking like the Lusitania. Logan has held lefties to a .174/.208/.217 line this season. I'd say he's an effective reliever, when used properly, of course.

Williams batted .406 Oops, .407 Nope, .406. I looked at the Korean War years.

The Time To Act... Unfortunately is Now.

QUOTE(BearSox @ May 29, 2007 -> 10:10 PM) Aybar and McPherson would be ideal for me... WTF would we want McPhereson for? To pair with Collaro and cool the Charlotte dugouts as they fan a combined 350 times? -
QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 29, 2007 -> 08:52 PM) And yet they ignore the next Brandon Webb. Pity. Can we stop with the Brandon Webb comparisons? I've turned into quite a fan of Eggy's, but I think it's silly to compare him to the best sinkerballer in the game right now. I think he'll end up better than the Shawn Hills, Aaron Cooks, and Clay Hensleys of the world, but it's still premature to start mentioning his name with a Cy Young candidate.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ May 26, 2007 -> 11:59 PM) You really will find a way to b**** about everything, huh? How did the Sox handle tonight "Piss Poor"? I am sure there was a number of reasons for the Sox calling the game tonight, especially so early. They rescheduled the game for a Monday afternoon in late August. Most college kids are back to school, as well as K-12. The walkup for that game will be crap, and they will probably be lucky to have 15+ asses in seats that game. A Saturday night game in May>>>Monday afternoon in late August. But you right, it is a shame people got screwed tonight, but blame the weather, not the Sox. Because Sunday is a getaway day, the choice was between a true double header (1 ticket, two games) and a rescheduled game, the Sox were going to choose the one that provided more revenue everytime. They've got a guaranteed 20K with their season ticket base for the reschedule, and can count out 5-10K more, which is 25-30K more tickets sold than in the double header situation.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 26, 2007 -> 09:09 PM) Anderson is 3-3 tonight, and has been picked off twice. Good, we can cut Pods when he comes off the DL.

I highly doubt Honel's topping 88, let alone sitting in the mid 90's.
-
QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 26, 2007 -> 12:44 PM) Honel is not a prospect, and McCulloch has not shown much. And "being in good shape" isn't exactly an accurate description when with Slowey, Garza, Baker, Perkins, Liriano, Andrew Miller, Adam Miller, Lofgren, De La Cruz, and Hochevar, what we have is merely keeping up with the Jones'.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 25, 2007 -> 11:08 PM) Say both Gio and Jack get bumped up to the IL. Which do you think will perform better, if, say, they both are in Charlotte's rotation for the last half of the season. You'd think Egbert's lack of the gopher ball would work well for him, but I also think that Gio's a better pitcher. Either way, Gio has nothing to prove in AA. Egbert's close to that point as well. I'd guess that Eggy succeeds quicker, or doesn't have much of a learning curve, but Gio will eventually dominate in AAA. It just might take another year. I'm still unsure about Eggy's strikeout rate. We'll have a much better idea what we have with him when we see what he does at a higher level of competition. They both should be at AAA as soon as possible. Gio because he's got nothing left to prove there. And Eggy because I want to see how that sinker holds up at the higher levels and in a smaller park, which I suppose is the same thing I just said about Gio.
-
QUOTE(BearSox @ May 25, 2007 -> 10:59 PM) If all three keep pitching like this, all three should be up. Phillips should/could be traded and Nunez is useless, put him in the pen or just release him. And then possibly trade Haeger/Floyd/Broadway to open up one more spot. There's nothing in Russells numbers that is begging for a callup. Gio is second in the minor leagues in strikeouts, and Eggy leads the SL in FIP (limiting walks + HR while striking guys out). They're both well ahead of Russel in terms of results. Russell needs his numbers to catch up to his scouting reports before I'll consider him anything more than a possible big league set-up man.
-
QUOTE(3E8 @ May 25, 2007 -> 07:59 PM) I'm not that concerned it isn't improving, strikeouts will always be part of his game. You can find several examples of successful players who K in more than 25% of their AB's. I'm more concerned about him maintaining the improvement at the next level in areas necessary if you are gonna K a ton, BB%, XBH%. Both of which he has gotten better at every single year. Also, if you're walking more, chances are you're working more 2-strike counts. If he's able to maintain his strikeout rate from last season, while nearly doubling an already acceptable walk rate, his contact skills have improved. It's just masked by him seeing a lot more pitches.

QUOTE(winninguglyin83 @ May 24, 2007 -> 09:25 PM) minor league web site touted Cassel's return tonight. Then he didn't pitch. Anybody know why? OK game by Gio? 12 Ks in 6 innings. One unearned run. He's no Sisco, that's for sure. A quick look at the context makes it much less impressive. Carolina isn't exactly a good double A team. They're batting .240 as a team and lead the league in strikeouts by a WIDE margin. Gio's pitched 11 innings against them this season. 3 hits, 2BB, 21K 0 ER.
-
I suppose that's an OK game from Gio. W-S didn't get rain, that was a 7-inning double-header than went into extras. Lujan started the second game and got SMOKED. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...wswafa_kinafa_2

QUOTE(forrestg @ May 24, 2007 -> 03:07 PM) How about Collaro he hits lefties well strikes out little too often 19 times in 77 at bats with only 3 walks. Although he does hit with authority against lefties. In 77 ab he has 25 hits 7 doubles a triple and 4 homers. that's an extra base hit every 6.41 ab. I don't know how that translates into AAA stats or major league totals. I have no knowledge of how well he plays the outfield what positions he can play. Can anyone elaborate. He's not a prospect. Can't control the strikezone while repeating AA means there's no translation to AAA or the Majors.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ May 23, 2007 -> 05:50 PM) Why the poop would you prefer ops when you're looking at team stats? Because it's more predictive of future runs scored than is R/G. OPS correlates to runs scored at about a coefficient of .97.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ May 23, 2007 -> 12:30 AM) It needs to happen. They have come out guns blazing this series and have looked great, Cy Gaudin is on the hill tomorrow, and as a few of us said about a week ago, they just need to wipe the floor with a team during a series, and they have a chance. Get it done Sox. The key for tomorrow will be on the basepaths. I read on AN that Kendall hasn't thrown out any of his last 29 runners (He was credited with 1 CS during that stretch, but it was with runners on first and third, pitcher threw to first, runner went home, throw came home, out at home) and Gaudin is really slow to the plate. I want to say there have been 19 SB against him already this year. (I don't remember the actual number) If that's the battery the A's go with, everyone not named Thome, Konerko, Pierzynski, and Dye should be running when they reach first.

QUOTE(Benchwarmerjim @ May 22, 2007 -> 09:43 PM) The Twins set a new team record by striking out Rangers batters 18 times. The old record was 17 Shouldn't count. Sosa was in the lineup. /didn't look at box score, he probably didn't strike out and went deep once.
-
QUOTE(Markbilliards @ May 23, 2007 -> 12:41 AM) I think its time for a promotion. When do you think he'll get moved up? No hits and only one walk in 7 innings tonight. After the draft. He'll be moved up to make room for somebody.
