QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 8, 2011 -> 01:28 PM) Ryan raised/s longhorn steer for a hobby. He probably could still beat up most 26 year old baseball players. True. You just have to wonder how smart a guy Robin Ventura is to charge Nolan Ryan. I'm not flaming. I know nothing about him personally and wish him well as our skipper, but he deserves all the ridicule he gets for that fight. He got owned.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 02:03 PM) My guess is Lamont will be the bench coach. I also think McEwing will get the 3rd base coach job and Manto will get the hitting coach job. I'd prefer Laker be the hitting coach, since he's familiar with the young guys, but the Tribune hinted more towards Manto. I wonder if he speaks Spanish, because we're going to need someone to help with the Cubans and other Latin players. That would be neat if Sandberg joined the staff. If anything he might be a good luck charm. Hasn't his last couple minor league teams both won the divisions they are in?

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Oct 8, 2011 -> 04:15 AM) That will never go away. I still laugh at it. That should be the 2011 Sox poster. Getting b**** slapped. Just watched it again. That's not the way to fight. It's like Ventura dipped his head right into the armpit of Ryan. All he had to do was close it and uppercut him. That's still one of the few baseball fights somebody truly gets beaten up. Ryan just clocked him on the uppercut.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 8, 2011 -> 02:05 AM) How would you rate her compared to Mrs. Teahen? QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 8, 2011 -> 04:28 AM) She was on Yes, Dear (I grew to really like that show in syndication in college). She's very hot in it. 1.) I think she is prolly hotter than Mrs. T, but I could be mistaken. 2.) Wow milkman backs me on an issue. I forgot about Yes Dear and she was hot in that as well.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 09:39 PM) I don't see the exceedingly beautiful in her, but to each their own. When she acted in Uncle Buck she played a high schooler but was really 20 so it's not creepy to ask you to watch that movie and look at her aged 20-30. She also remained a good looking woman into her 30s-40s but whatever. And she is a great singer as well as actor.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 08:09 PM) This chick? Total babe? Really? Yes. She grew up to be a very attractive young woman. She is exceedingly beautiful. Is that better?

QUOTE (Cali @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 07:32 PM) For those looking for a positive spin, just look up the synopsis for the movie Mr. Holland's Opus. And every time Mr. Holland comes up replace it with Robin. Cause you see, Mr. Holland never wanted to teach, but in the end he loved his job....and the kids, they wound up teaching HIM. So it might all work out with Robin... That one chick in the movie is hot. The one who was a teenager in Uncle Buck and then grew up to be a total babe.

After listening to that interview I can see why Coop didn't get the job. He's a wildman with that accent and edge. I love his work and like his attitude but no way he could deal with the media twice a day. You guys are right bout that one.
-
Has Coop really worked for the Sox for 26 years? I listened to the interview.

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 05:28 PM) I think greg has gone past the point of just having an unpopular opinion to that of obvious troll. Either that or related to cowley/guillen. People should just stop trying. QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 07:09 PM) He's already better than Ozzie in my book. 1.) We've been through this troll thing before. A troll doesn't show up for 10 years and have a zillion posts. 2.) Ozzie got FRIED on this board that one game for sitting CQ after he hit 2 homers the night before or had 4 hits or something. Oz was sitting him cause he was 1-for-40 against the guy who was throwing or something. Just.Win.Baby. Only way to shut people up.

I think it's a ridiculous hire (I truly do love Robin Ventura though). It just signals bad things for the future. You got Francona out there and you pick Robin Ventura? I really hope Robin proves me wrong. He doesn't fit the mold of a manager IMO, soft spoken, classy, humble, even boring. But Kirk Gibson doesn't fit the mold either IMO. A big slugging mountain of a man. So the Sox are thinking outside the box. Maybe that's good. But in the traditional baseball sense it's a terrible hire.

2011-2012 OFFICIAL NBA LOCKOUT thread

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 01:04 AM) The owners know the players will eventually cave. At this point the owners may as well sit and wait out the players. The players seem kind of pissed this time. I really don't think there will be a season. Then after the next draft, it should really get interesting. A deal will finally be reached next September probably and it should be interesting to see all the players who get cut at massive training camps. Two years worth of draft picks battling all the free agents, so much movement. But I truly don't think there will be basketball at any point this season. Guys like Harrison Barnes and Sullinger are really going to look smart as long as they don't suffer bad injuries this year. -
What do you think of the Hawks' goalie situation? How did Crawford play in the preseason? Is he an elite goalie or not? Do we still have a veteran backup? Where did last year's No. 2 go?

QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 07:09 PM) All managers do not call for the same number of bunts. You keep pointing out that Hamilton I believe bunted down a lot of runs, but it wasn't a freaking sacrifice attempt. Stop trying to spin every article out there to support what little evidence you have about your feelings on Ozzie. If Jeter hits that ball 3 more feet then I'm sure Leyland is a bum to most of that fanbase. ARod goes 2for17 in the series and I'm sure many are pissed at Girardi. It's all about the players.

QUOTE (kev211 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 08:33 AM) Seriously, I know other people have already commented on this post probably but I just got to it and have to comment. You are seriously going to believe a word Cowley writes? It's almost sick how much you love Ozzie. Cooper is a much better coach then him, and he was just looking out for himself knowing Ozzie was probably getting close to being done. Cooper lives in Chicago he was just trying to make sure had a job where he lived and has coached forever. I'm honestly shocked you are not a marlins fan right now with how much you love Ozzie. He's a worthless manager with a much too big ego. Ventura has not even coached a game yet and he's already better. I'm not a Marlins fan because this is like when one of your favorite players is traded. It sucks big time but you don't become a fan of that other team. Hey for whatever reason Rios might decide he wants to impress Robin Ventura for some reason and might have a great season. Dunn might like the guy after meeting him and decide to put in a little more work this winter and try some different things to make an adjustment or two and actually hit .270 with 44 home runs. Youneverknow.

Yes I believe Cowley. If he's wrong, he's putting his job on the line. What Cooper did is really sleazy. Nobody likes a backstabber. It's WRONG. If this was the 1950s, Ozzie would beat his ass. But nowadays he'll spend time in prison for smashing Coop a good one in the nose. (I'm assuming the article is true; if not, my bad).

QUOTE (Paulstar @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 06:06 AM) My favorite thing about Ventura is that when no one thought he could cut it at 3B, he worked hard and transformed himself into a gold glove third baseman. I really hope he does the same thing as manager for the Sox. I really don't understand the outrage about this hire. Surprising? Yeah, but there were worse moves you could have made. There is no doubt that Ventura knows baseball as well, if not better, than the other candidates. There is no doubt that Ventura is a good person and hard working. The only doubt there is about Ventura is how well he can manage a clubhouse and players. But I feel that Ventura is such a respected and smart player that he might be able to learn quick. Will he succeed or fail? I don't know, but I think he has decent odds. One thing I know for sure though, he will be easy to root for because he is a great person who loves baseball and hopefully won't make a full out of himself and bash the whole fan base when things don't go right. It's not so much outrage, but in my mind it's sadness because to me this signals the Sox know we are going to suck for some time to come. So Robin is the perfect manager to manage a team that has no chance to win. I would look for Buehrle be the first domino to fall the wrong way. He will soon announce he's looking elsewhere. Then I feel AJ will be dealt. Somebody will take him. Those will be 2 fairly significant cost cutting moves (even AJ's contract is money they'll be happy to dump with Flowers/Castro taking over) to go with the money they save in trading Robin for Oz. After that, once the winter rolls around I look for CQ to be dealt and one of Danks/Floyd, maybe both. Then our team will REALLY be in rebuilding mode and I look for about 104 losses next year. It's just too obvious a move. It signals the dreaded rebuild. I think most of us like Robin Ventura a lot. It's sadness for me. Rebuilding has begun. No hope of pennant next year. I hope Jerry likes the end of his days on earth (the odds are nobody lives to 90/100) will be with the White Sox's home ballpark about 1/3 full on a nightly basis.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 05:23 AM) Is there actually such a thing as a Sox fan anymore? By that I mean, is there anyone out there who hopes the team does well, and who would rather be positive about the future? I find it kind of strange that coming off one of the most disappointing Sox seasons in history that there are still people out there who not only think we can do much worse, but also seem to hope we do worse, and appear to be eager to see the team fail so they can be "right" rather than enjoy a future season of competitive baseball. I don't think any of us hope we'll do worse. It may seem that way. It's not the case in my opinion. I'd like nothing better than Robin open 20-10 the first few weeks.

I am not saying I'm right. Appearances can be misleading. But I can't get over the vision of watching Ventura as color announcer at the College World Series this year when they interviewed Bush. It was neat cause Bush kept asking Ventura questions. But Robin seems like such a nice, proper guy in his impeccable suit and tie. Man he does not seem like a big league manager. Managers get all worried and uptight and weirded out. Watching Leyland worries me almost. Ventura is Mr. Cool. Mr. Class. I just can't see him managing. Not a rip. He just seems like he should have a suit and tie on at all times while speaking in a low voice to people at business meetings. He's the antithesis (sp) of Yogi Berra/Earl Weaver I guess is what I'm trying to say. Welcome to a modern era manager I guess. I guess he'll study Sabes all the time and hopefully it'll work. Hope I made my point clear. Like every Sox fan, I like the guy but I can't picture him managing for some reason.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 05:51 AM) What if it isnt true. What if it's make believe from a guy with a limited education, his spawn, and his lackey. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 05:51 AM) lol I wouldnt put faith in me, Im good at failed expectations. Assuming for the sake of argument that Cowley is correct, then obviously its a messed up situation. The problem is that Cowley really hasnt proven to be a reliable source, and in some peoples opinion his nothing more than a shill for the Guillen clan. Personally I dont know, I like Robin Ventura and that is all that really matters. I dont like to get into the gossip columns thats for the birds. (Reading his column today was the first time in at least a year or longer) 1.) If it isn't true there should be repercussions to the reporter. Suspension or firing. He had some wild stuff in there. 2.) I can buy the Badger's response. No offense to anybody else, but I like his tone. If Cowley isn't reliable, fine, there could be some doubt. But I'm assuming his bosses would reprimand him if this story wasn't true, so I have to go by what I read, don't I? And I'm alarmed by Coop's alleged behavior.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 05:40 AM) I dont believe anything in any newspaper (hyperbole obviously), Im kind of a cynic. I believe in the badger. What he says goes on this topic. Badger if what Cowley writes is true, isn't that alarming behavior by Coop?
-
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 05:40 AM) Not surprising. I assume you're this guy: No need to get personal. Oh I can take a joke. I assume it's a joke. Ha ha. Milk I don't know why u have so much trouble dealing with conflicting opinions. People say I need help. But IMO I can at least handle a difference of opinion with aplomb.
-
QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 05:34 AM) Your entire schtick has got to be an act. Because If it isn't this is a cry for help. It seems your guys' premise is the article is false. Let's say it is true, one written by Pete Gammons. Would you be alarmed at all by Coop's behavior? Cmon I was born on the southside of Chicago. Guys like Coop get punched in the face ... a lot (if story is true).
-
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 05:25 AM) Seriously, if the guy were smart, he'd have backtracked and tried to suck up to the current coaches and players. He's just burning those bridges right down to the ground. Nobody will talk to him. They probably wouldn't have anyway, but this way he'd have a chance. Some people don't like to suck up. Personally I don't like to suck up at work. Prolly why I'm not on the path to being rich, yet.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 05:27 AM) I think it's time to put down Old Yeller, because this act is getting beyond embarrassing. So you think Coop's behavior is warranted and FINE? Or you just dispute what Cowley wrote. Why would a well paid reporter make s*** up? He wouldn't lest he get fired. I give the article my applause.
