  1. I still say if the Royals acquired a top flight starter like Buehrle or Oswalt or Greinke they might be in business. They still can't win anything with that s***ty rotation.
  2. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 10:17 PM) How do you know that? What if you give him $15 mil a year for four seasons and he has a 4.50+ ERA every year? That's not earning that salary. Then we wasted Jerry's money. Big deal. Like I said, signing Mark or not signing Mark will have NO EFFECT on ticket prices, cost of parking, concessions. I'd rather have Mark get the loot than somebody else we might bring in.
  3. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Nov 19, 2011 -> 12:13 AM) If he only hits 26 HR's that would be bust city! Twenty six home runs would be a huge year for the aging, slow-bat, no pop, no clue at the plate version of Dunn IMO.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 11:30 PM) It'd be nice to put one more other piece in there (that is presumably a not top 100 prospect), but this is about the level of return I'd expect for Matty, given his contract status and his lack of ability to close. That last post on the scouting report was encouraging. Seems like Thornton, who two years ago was money, should bring more, though. Or do we assume the Thornton we saw last year was the sign of things to come? A declining Thornton?
  5. I thought Bill James had him hitting .210 with 20 bombs next year. Something like that.
  6. QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 04:58 PM) Without out knowing what the ramifications would be with other negotiations, I would say 3/$42 with a decent mutual option for the 4th year. I would also like some list of maybe 5-6 teams that he would accept a trade. This should get it done. It's fair to both sides. SIGN HIM.
  7. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 18, 2011 -> 08:22 PM) Come on, man. Obviously it's not our money, but we still care about how it's being spent, because any money that goes to Buerhle is money that doesn't go to another player(s). And that includes saving money this year and spending it down the road. The payroll is not unlimited. Fair enough. Sorry I didn't see the poll. My bad. I'm out of whack sports wise with all the deaths, horrible scandals. Ok State coaches die; Syracuse, Penn State, horrible. I still say give Mark whatever he wants. He'll earn the money unlike some bums.
  8. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 03:14 PM) All of this. My excitement raises with each step towards rebuilding. Why would you want to rebuild when we are saddled with Dunn and Rios for another year? Those guys have to play. And we have another high paid vet in Paulie. We need to retool while trying to win the division. If we are going to rebuild, then Paulie should be traded, too. Somebody would take him. A complete rebuild makes no sense. Once the Sox are 10-20 that will be it for the season. Everybody wants to watch a winner, not some rebuilding team like the Royals. Time to tinker not rebuild.
  9. We should do a poll and ask ... at what cost would u bring back Mark. I'd say ... any cost. Just outbid everybody. It's not our money. And ticket prices will be outrageous no matter if he signs or not.
  10. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 06:55 PM) 0.12 I need a long offseason to get up the want to see Adam Dunn and Alex Rios do anything again. I'm at a 2 and it's not because my favorite Sox is gone, Ozzie. I'm over that surprisingly. No one player (manager) is bigger than my love of the team. But Beckham, Rios, Dunn, mostly the hitters' ineptitude of last season has had me at my lowest point in Soxdom in a long time. Also the inability to beat the Central and all that. I guess a few trades that make us contenders not rebuilders could make me get excited pretty fast. The new regime should wipe out a lot of the crummy stuff like inability to beat the Central and inability to win at home and inability to actually put together a hot winning streak. Robin had nothing to do with any of that, so it is a fresh slate for now.
  11. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 16, 2011 -> 05:08 PM) DeJesus is worse than any OF the Sox have. DeJesus is pretty lousy.
  12. Is it true Pujols, Reyes and Mark are considering Oz's Marlins? Not meant to flame, but this proves what a joke that poll was a few years ago that said Oz was the most hated manager by players in the game. Bulls***.
  13. It's seems pretty basic. If you are a veteran and already set for life financially, you might want to stay with one team your whole life as long as the team has a reasonable shot at anything. Now if the team is the Royals or somebody like that with zero shot, you have to flee, but if I were Mark I'd take the hometown discount. Now if he's convinced the Sox are s*** and won't be contending anytime soon (which frankly is possibly the case), then I don't blame him for heading to the money and a contender. If he does stay it means he's willing to watch Rios and Dunn hit for another full season or two, so maybe that lends us fans hope that there's hope the 2 of them will turn it around.
  14. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 9, 2011 -> 08:44 PM) Sometimes it takes some time for a player to develop. GB was rushed to the majors and has played two different positions from what he was a great college star at and he has done very well in the field. Plus sometimes you just have to have patience with young developing talent. Apparently we have a limited amount of that and think we have to have an instant Babe Ruth or the player is a failure. True, but he really stunk last year at the plate. He could have 'helped' bail out a horrific lineup had he hit like Beckham is supposed to hit.
  15. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Nov 9, 2011 -> 07:03 AM) This. Come on. What u mean by come on? Don't get it. I'm horrified and sick over this case.
  16. Well, the Penn State students are a joke. They flocked to Joe Pa's house and chanted "We love you Joe Pa" and all that. Then they hit the streets. Once again, the masses forget what this is about. Sickens me.
  17. Do you folks think Joe Pa should be fired? I say yes. This scandal really truly saddens and sickens me. Matt Millen IMO said it best. If we as a society can't protect our children, then what good is our society? My god. How could people at Penn State live with themselves knowing this predator was on the loose? I guess in a similar vein, how could some of those bishops live with themselves transferring predator priests around? I mean PROTECT THE CHILDREN people! And I am Catholic and still a practicing Catholic but the people in society who don't call the police! My god, put them in jail. Can you imagine the 100,000 people at the Nebraska-PSU game Saturday? They won't be proud PSU alums. They will be horrified alums.
  18. QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 8, 2011 -> 07:20 PM) If he gets traded now, it would be part of big package deal. Since he's been compared to Michael Young in the past, I'd like to point out Young really didn't do anything in the majors until he was 26. 10 years later, he's had a damn good career. I'd like to give Beckham at least one more year with a new coaching staff, and see if he can come around with the bat. Good post. One thing is sure. After last season, my opinion of Beckham has changed. He was gawdawful at the plate, great in the field, though.
  19. Can you imagine Mark pitching against last year's Sox lineup? He would have breezed through it with that effortless style of his. I guess Paulie would be his one problem out, though. Paulie might be the one Sox to whack him around.
  20. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Nov 7, 2011 -> 01:57 AM) Thome on a NL team makes no sense at all. The bottom line is YOU SAID IT ALL with that short post. Paulie is a master at first base digging throws and fielding grounders to his right. He's not so great to his left for some reason. Jim Thome will be a disaster at first base. a.) He's old. b.) he's huge. c.) didn't he go to the Dodgers a few years ago down the stretch and was only a pinch hitter? Jim may want a WS title, but what good is it if you never play? I guess he'll be DH for a couple weeks during the season and pinch hitter the rest.
  21. QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Nov 5, 2011 -> 05:35 AM) He'll get time at first base. Howard won't be back to start the season. Is that a good idea? He'll be a butcher at first base with absolutely no range considering his girth and his age.
  22. It says on Yahoo that Thome is going to the Phillies for 1.25 million. Two questions: 1.) Why would the Phillies want a DH on their team?? For the games against the AL? Seems dumb to have a roster spot for a guy who is basically a pinch hitter. 2.) Why would an old vet like Thome want to sit the bench all season? I know baseball isn't a real job and a million bucks is great, but isn't there some AL team that could use him as a part time DH? Or full time DH? Twins maybe?? Indians maybe??
  23. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 4, 2011 -> 02:46 PM) We Sox fans always knew the Konerko was one of the best fastball hitters in the game today. Very true elrockin. He's been on fire the past few seasons smoking hits all over the place.
  24. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Nov 4, 2011 -> 05:15 PM) If someone is going to overpay MB so be it, I do not want it to be the Sox. Heaven forbid the Sox overpay for somebody who actually would earn the money.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2011 -> 09:26 PM) Personally, I think it's an "Ideal situation" if Robin happens to be a guy capable of getting through those guys' skulls. Or Manto. Or both. This team can win the Central next year if as many things go right next year as went wrong this year. Maybe Robin will be the good luck charm and end our hex against Central Division foes.
