  1. QUOTE (Wanne @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 07:40 PM) The best possible "additions" we could add would be a few "subtractions" of some dead weight IMO...hard to do both at the same time. I kinda doubt we're "all in" next year. Of course it depends on the second half of this season...but we've been down this road before. This "All In" figures to be a one-year thing. Right now we're one under .500 and all-in. We are only in the race because of the division we play in. If Sox don't win division handily, this all in stuff will be a thing of the past. Our payroll figures to go down drastically with the team dumping most anybody who makes a buck not named Paulie or Mark.
  2. Good article, but his quotes are all cliches. Like Al Davis says, "Just Win Baby." Just Win White Sox. Yes the guys need to play hard and not loaf. He just should have said they need to play like Tulo did in scoring on that bloop single to center all the way from first base. If we play like that, we win more than we lose. If the Sox play like the Sox usually do against the Central, it's going to be an ugly second half in the clubhouse and on this board and on Jerry's bottom line.
  3. It's got to be Yankees-Mets in KC as well. Do you know if it is? I can't believe there's no way to watch this game. They should have an exception on mlb.com for Chi-Chi and NY-NY. You should get to watch the game on there.
  4. This team has made so many bad acquisitions (Peavy, Juan, Rios, Dunn, Edwin) and decisions I can't even imagine what players we'll be bringing in in the future. Our only good moves are with unknowns like Mr. Humber!
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 05:31 AM) It's a rhetorical idea. I have no idea if I would work as hard as Juan. I'd like to think so but I simply don't know. I bet Adam Dunn is working his ass off right now, but because he's been a great power hitter in the past and he isn't starting to come through and he isn't grindy nor a particularly likable character, people like you criticize the hell out of him. That's a double standard. Oh, and as to Juan "leading" the Sox to victory...I don't think so. That is a combined team effort and him having the go ahead hit doesn't mean that he led the team to victory. If you want to play it like that, then I'd say that he's cost the Sox more games due to defensive lapses than he has won them with his bat. April and May weren't that long ago. The article wasn't about Dunn's work ethic. Ozzie hasn't talked about Dunn's work ethic. If we see similar story/comments about Dunn, I'll comment on those. I said I was in favor of Dayan coming up and I'm not all Juan. We need Viciedo and now. I wouldn't say Juan is a likeable character, not with the hate on him all season. And I didn't mean to start any trouble. Sorry if i offended.
  6. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 06:05 AM) If I played professional baseball, I would work just as hard as Juan Pierre. I'm quite clearly not as talented as any major leaguer, but through my hardwork, I would raise my batting average from .050 to .125. Would you cheer for me and want me to remain on the team? Juan Pierre is a 4th outfielder who is starting in LF and getting the most plate appearances of anybody on the team. With all due respect, how do you know you would work as hard as Juan? Do you realize the grind of a pro baseball season? Now maybe you are a Robo-man superman. I don't know you. But plenty of baseball players each offseason THINK they are going to work hard and don't. I don't think it's a given you or anybody would play as hard as Pierre does. I want Dayan in the lineup, period, but Chicago should probably be ashamed of himself hating on Juan as much as it does. I mean what other player has 2 days in a row led us to victory (besides Sergio and our excellent starters)?? Rios? Dunn? Gordon B? Lexi?
  7. Here's an exerpt from David Haugh's column. He praises Juan Pierre for leading us to victory the last 2 games: "Pierre’s five errors this season created understandable scrutiny and criticism. Ideally, he also would have more steals than 11 and a higher batting average than .262. But on a Sox team with Dunn hitting .171 and Alex Rios having just 20 RBIs — two fewer than the Sox’s leadoff man — Pierre becoming so polarizing seems odd. He doesn’t bring attention to himself or occasionally loaf like, say, his left-field counterpart with the Cubs, Alfonso Soriano. He arrives early and stays late. He epitomizes the type of athlete Chicago typically celebrates, not denigrates. Not that Pierre’s complaining. “When you play in Chicago, that definitely comes with the territory,” said Pierre, a Cub in 2006. “I just continue to work and not let any of the outside distractions enter my head.” It helps that Ozzie Guillen repeats his impassioned support for Pierre every time somebody asks about prospect Dayan Viciedo. To Guillen, Pierre is like a magic Juan who fits the mold of catalyst and leads by example. Before the game, Guillen said no other player he has managed regularly comes to work with the same steady attitude. “Put it this way: I wish I had 25 Juan Pierres, with all the respect to Paul Konerko, (Alex) Rios, (Adam) Dunn,” Guillen said. “If he’s 0-for-4 or 4-for-4, he doesn’t change any day.” With more days like Friday, maybe the perception of Pierre will." What say you about this column?? Juan Pierre deserves praise, not scorn, these days. He's hard working like Haugh says, yet we blast him. Should we Sox fans be ashamed of ourselves?
  8. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 08:26 PM) Probably Bruney, even though I do actually like Bruney. If the Sox are still running with a 6 man rotation, they have a long reliever in whichever starter is on his throw day, and that's really all you need that isn't bring provided. I have complete faith in Santos, Crain, Thornton, Sale, and, to some extent, even Ohman. The pitching is absolutely fine. What this team needs is offense. Of course, that would be assuming Ozzie would manage it properly. I believe 100% that he would screw that up. I don't see how we can dump Bruney at this juncture. Regarding your last line, I love Ozzie but one thing I don't understand. You can't order guys to bunt on our team because they are unable to execute the bunt. If Dayan comes up, he'll probably have him bunt. I mean Gordon's bunt attempts today were laughable. He does not know how to bunt. Lexi can't bunt. Even Pierre is not automatic at getting it down. I see a lot of foul balls. I would think the only guys I would even consider flashing the bunt sign to are Pierre and Omar. I have advocated the bunt before and defended Oz on it, but failure after failure makes me say OZZIE NO MORE BUNTS! And yes, I realize we hit into A LOT of double plays when we don't bunt. p.s. Do you guys think we can become a home run hitting team the second half? Do u agree it is the only way we can consistently score (to go with nice AJ singles)?
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 01:12 AM) Santos is really growing in confidence. Three games in a row with dominating stuff where there wasn't even a hint of a comeback or threat. Pierre shifting ALL the attention in the line-up back to Mr. Dunn. Bruney has been surprisingly effectively...between him and Humber, two of the best "zero cost" acquisitions of the off-season. Ozzie, please, never ever make Beckham bunt again in those late inning situations. Just let him hit away. Acknowlege what your players are capable of doing and what they're not. Finally, let's also start executing to get those late inning runs on the board from third base and less than 2 outs. QUOTE (earthshiner @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 04:56 AM) seems like maybe that loss in Colorado was a big wake up for the team 1. Great caufield post. Agree on all those points. I think you have pretty much summarized some points about our team. 2.) If the Sox truly have gained a ton of confidence and are a changed team ... I'd like to see a blowout Saturday or one of these days. At some point, are we going to win in a rout over somebody? If we truly have momentum, we need to somehow do what the Rockies did to the Royals today, have a nice, calm, 9-0 victory. Otherwise we're still the White Sox ... plodding along trying to win close games amid trying our best to avoid getting shut out for the 10th time.
  10. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 04:41 AM) I feel like so many people miss the point of advanced stats so the entire "controversy" for lack of a better word is a misnomer. Baseball has ALWAYS been a game that's heavy into stats so it's not like it's anything new... all the percentages and things that you see are the result of actual games being played and the marking of trends and whatnot. Without them, you'd basically just be pulling stuff out of your ass. Some of the more "mainstream" sabermetric stats are pretty straightforward, not even hard to understand at all. They're not different stats, they're better stats. And yes I understand how stat geeks can really come off as treating stats as gospel, and I roll my eyes too when it's obvious to the world that Player X has sucked hardcore and someone tries to make an excuse for him with his BABIP but that's not what I'm talking about. To just flat-out reject them just because you don't like them so you can just stubbornly go with your "gut" or whatever (the whole "clutch hitting" thing comes to mind) doesn't make any sense at all. Good post. I don't mind the new stats, but s***, sometimes batting average deserves to be cited as a worthy stat. Juan Pierre's batting average doesn't suggest he should be DFA'ed. Brent Morel's OBP suggests he might learn how to draw a few more walks.
  11. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 10:24 PM) I'm as superstitious as they come. I just want 'em to f***ing win. If I think they do better when I don't watch, then so be it. QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 10:38 PM) I'd still DFA him tomorrow. No one is going to take a 0 tool player at his salary, and even if we covered the salary, I can't see many takers. Unfortunately the last two games for him means he will most likely get a free pass for another month or two. 1.) With all due respect, you may need psychiatric help. The Sox play the Cubs six times a year. Enjoy the games! There's no scientific proof you turning off the TV helps. So watch the games. Be a participant, baby. 2.) Give me a break. The guy won us the last 2 games. Pure and simple. He's hitting about .270. You don't DFA him. Are you serious??? I want to make room for Dayan as well, but Pierre is a big leaguer. Trade him to Houston. Don't they like slappy hitters like Juan? If Juan decides to pull the ball like fathom suggests he has the ability to do what he did the last 2 games - that is, win us the games. He's won us more games the last 2 games than Dunn has all year.
  12. Balta listed all the heroes. Great win.
  13. Juan Pierre showed today why he's not a DFA candidate. If we want to play Dayan every day in left, fine, but we're going to have to trade Juan, not release him.
  14. That was a heck of a nice bullet throw by Morel.
  15. Except for the bunting bulls***, Oz made all the right calls today. Amazing how a manager looks good when his players produce in spots he puts them in.
  16. Nice to have that glove and arm at third. Very nice f***ing play. Sergio you are a good reliever. Congrats White Sox. Good victory.
  17. We'll take it. Two out. If Sergio gets the third out, I may cry in joy.
  18. Damn. Reed is up. Gonna have to earn this out, Sergio.
  19. I love Soriano being the leadoff hitter, not taking any pitches!! Awesome. One out.
  20. QUOTE (C_LEE45 @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 09:03 PM) id stay with crain Me too. Is four days in a row too much for any closer? We shall see.
  21. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 09:01 PM) Runner at 3rd with 1 out in the last 2 innings = 0 runs. That, Ginger Kid, loses you ballgames and keeps you 3 games under .500. Let's hope we aren't doomed.
  22. I realize why we bunt and all that, but until the Sox actually start working on bunting enough to actually be average bunters, the bunt should be gone from our repertoire. Is it safe to say THE WHITE SOX CANNOT BUNT! THE WHITE SOX ARE UNABLE TO BUNT.
  23. QUOTE (C_LEE45 @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 09:00 PM) can we just swing the bat Let's hope Sergio isnt' tired and his pitches flat. Or wild. We needed that run.
  24. Ridiculous at bat. Oz is a moron for this late inning bunting. Killing our offensive mo jo.
