I am out of here for some sunday activities. I will read rest of thread later. Should be an interesting thread if we ultimately fail today cause of lack of hitting vs. Livan. -

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:07 PM) Say what you will, but these are time-proven statistics created by some of the smartest math people in the world. I agree the explanation somebody posted was pretty easy to follow. I just always think of the bad card game when I see the word WAR -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:04 PM) Beckham and Dunn just baffle me this season. Beckham always turns it around when I finally agree he should be sent down. Send him down! -

QUOTE (FlySox87 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:02 PM) Because I still haven't figured out how on Earth WAR is calculated. Maybe I'd respect it more if someone could explain the concept. ERA, to me, at least measures a concrete thing. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:02 PM) And for good reason, the average fan doesn't want to hear about WAR, wOBA, UZR and all these esoteric stats. It would bog down the broadcast big time and make it unwatchable for most fans. WAR to me is a boring card game that some people actually, foolishly play in Vegas. To play that game at a table in Vegas is taking your money and ripping it to shreds. -

Somebody on this thread mentioned a long time ago none of the Sox hitters cept Paulie make adjustments. Way to get shut down by this soft tosser. Beckham needs to drill a gapper here!! -

QUOTE (JoshPR @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 07:59 PM) I'll give you that, but everything now is sabermetrics, that's my point. Ok you can use them as reference but sheesh now a days is WAR, WUZI whatever At least those who don't like sabes don't have to be inundated with them. The traditional media and play by play and color announcers ignore sabermetrics like the plague. -

QUOTE (JoshPR @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:49 PM) I hate those damn sabermetrics, I mean who cares about war and whatever, bill James never played and he's gotten rich on these stupid stats Hey, those are fighting words to the sabes people. Knock it off!! Just kidding. I'm not a sabes guy either though Bill James lives here and he is a great man. -

Great line. That's really all that needs to be said about Adam Dunn. 3 more K's today ... and counting. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:39 PM) Trouble is, Adrian Gonzalez is better at that too. I'll have to take Paulie just being on the team then and watch him get the obligatory one at bat. -

QUOTE (elgonzo4sox @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:35 PM) Agree completely. But the starting lineup is determined by fans. Jeter's presence shows it's an absolute joke. I happen to love watching Paulie play defense, too. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:28 PM) Assuming that a player must be the worst of the worst because you don't know how to look for data is either hyperbole, laziness, or naivete. He's been bad. Plain bad. People have been worse. Lots of people have been worse. Brandon Wood's epic .382 OPS last year was a pretty good example. He might well be one of the worst ever to put up these numbers while being paid this kind of money. That narrows the list down considerably. Good post. As far as laziness ... it's Sunday man. Day of rest for most people. This ain't rocket science. On Monday or Tuesday maybe it'd be worth looking up, not a restful Sunday. -

QUOTE (elgonzo4sox @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:24 PM) Did Walker get into details about what Dunn is doing wrong? I think that Dunn's long swing forces him to have to start his swing early, and his poor knowledge of AL pitchers and inability to time them is making him highly susceptible to swings at bad pitches and missing any ball with movement on it. That's a great post IMO. Paulie not starting the all-star game angers me. He is the definition of 'all star starter.' -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:18 PM) I don't care what you say, that wasn't hyperbolic. You come up with a good comeback on the 139 players but Dunn should be lumped right in with them. I don't think Dunn will be sent down, but Fathom's theory is plausible. Oz loves Omar obviously. And Lilly can play anywhere. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:19 PM) It's certainly Hyperbolic to say that Dunn is the worst in the last 30 years and then accept that he should be lumped in with that other group. He can't be much much worse than them if he's in the group. Oops I mean Becks, not Dunn in my post. And it is not hyperbolic as it is reasonable to assume Dunn might be one of the worst in 20 years unless one takes the time and has the ability to quickly find the list of hitters you found. It was a reasonable assumption looking at Dunn's dead horrible stats. Perhaps he should have said worst White Sox player in 30 years getting the same number of at bats. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:06 PM) And Viciedo takes over 2b? Come on fathom. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:08 PM) Omar and Lillibridge split time at 2nd. Viciedo gives you some more outfield depth as well. QUOTE (FlySox87 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:13 PM) How about Mark Reynolds last year? Or Carlos Pena last year. They had power, but both were under the .200 line. And Reynolds was striking out at his normal lunatic rate. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:15 PM) There are 139 different players who have put up a sub .600 OPS over a 400+ plate appearance season since 1980. Cesar Izturis put up a .545 OPS last year. I don't care what you say, that wasn't hyperbolic. You come up with a good comeback on the 139 players but Dunn should be lumped right in with them. I don't think Dunn will be sent down, but Fathom's theory is plausible. Oz loves Omar obviously. And Lilly can play anywhere. -

QUOTE (elgonzo4sox @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:06 PM) Maybe this will be the game that finally gets this concept through Ozzie's thick head. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:06 PM) Yeah, that's pretty much hyperbole defined. Dunn 8th, sounds good to me. Juan ninth. Becks seventh. Balta are you serious or joking? He's got to be right on that. Dunn's stats have to be some of the worst in 20 years or more unless baseball is full of whiffers. That's no hyperbole. Maybe you were kidding. -

QUOTE (FlySox87 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:02 PM) I don't feel bad for Dunn. He's making millions of dollars a year to suck like this? I'd say that's a thief. True. If Dunn is depressed about this he can go print out his bank statement. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:01 PM) Wow, overmatched by an 85 mph fastball. I'm surprised fans aren't booing him louder He's laughably bad. Day after day and no change in the results. He could have blown this game wide open had he hit a bomb. Instead more of the same, Sox stranding runners. Doesn't it seem like we have an inordinate amount of close games? -

Dunn gets aggressive on the first pitch but got a funky pitch unhittable. Got to feel sorry for the big lug. Can't catch up to heat. Can't hit a curve. (Can you hear that fan yelling stuff? It's pretty funny. 'This is your house' to Dunn. 'Hey batter, swing' to the Nats hitters. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 07:55 PM) The league average OPS for 2b this year is .680. His is .633 and for his career is .722. People look at Dunn's past stats but won't look at Becks? I'm not a huge fan but I'm not proclaiming him a waste yet. -

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 07:53 PM) What makes you believe this? His career numbers and he's only 24. He hit .252 last year and .270 the year before. 49 ribbies last year with too many strikeouts. -

QUOTE (FlySox87 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 07:50 PM) I don't care what position it is; there is nothing average about a .228 BA. That just stinks. True. I meant when all is said and done on the season he'll have stats prolly average for a 2B. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 07:47 PM) Lillibridge's swing this year seems like one of the shortest on our roster. Not to me. He's struck out 32 times in 107 at bats. He uses that huge bat and takes a huge hack at it. 11 of his 29 hits are extra base. He thinks he's a power hitter which is OK for a utility guy I guess. -

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 07:45 PM) Again, you've got to be careful having a guy change what he's always done when what he's always done has always worked to the tune of 350 home runs. True, but at some point you might think he's lost the bat speed and might switch a bit. -

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 07:43 PM) I don't like Gordon Beckham anymore. The only likeable Beckham is the guy who gets on the torrid hot streak for a few weeks. Otherwise, yuk. He's a good fielder though, and overall probably an average hitter for the position.
