QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 18, 2010 -> 08:36 PM) They wont settle at this point, not because Blago wouldnt, but because Fitzgerald is looking bad right now. Its becoming vindictive. You got the guy, hes in financial ruins, he could go to jail for a few months or years. I think thats enough, lets save some tax payer money and move on with our lives. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 19, 2010 -> 07:20 PM) I dont think I ever said that. Merely stated that they feds have a conviction that could carry up to 5 year prison term. What more do they want? 20 year term? 50 year term? The guy is in ruins, he wont ever have the opportunity to commit a similar crime again. He poses no real risk to society. I guess Im not into punishment for the sake of punishment. They convicted Blago, why do they need another show? I would prefer that they moved on to bigger and better things. I tend to agree with Badger. This is a great thread BTW. Unlike the Sox board people on here are expressing fluent arguments and not merely presenting the same ol s*** over and over like Kotsay and Ozzie sucks. This is a GREAT THREAD. Great discussion. I love hearing your takes on Blago.

I don't doubt that, but there was a time he had no flaws in the eyes of our fans. Is he human now? I worship Bobby, but heck, they might as well give Thornton his shot now. Bobby had his try and blew those 2 saves in a week; Putz had his try and was equally horrible. Why not give Matt a shot in KC?
-
Too bad for Thornton, then. If they asked him to close, I think he'd close. Uncomfortable? Then he needs to grow up n get comfortable. There's a lot more money for him to make as a closer.
-
Paulie is second in the AL in homers. Nice. I love his glove even though he's had a few bobbles lately. I for one worship his scoops. He'll be valuable even as a defender. I'd sign him 2 years like a lot of you said, then that's it for him unless he's willing to platoon, etc.
-
Jerry's pretty old, isn't he? That's what I meant by that. He shows his elder some respect. Jerry's 74, not exactlly a spring chicken.
-
Not really. Thornton is a legitimate option. He still had to choose between Jenks and Thornton.
-
What say you all on these developments as reported by the Chicago Tribune? The tension will be high in KC if we hold a lead entering the ninth as Bobby returns to his closer role. Are you satisfied with this or do you wish Ozzie would give it to Thornton right now with Bobby visually appearing fatter than previous seasons and Thornton apparently healthy and available to close in this, his first season as an All-Star?

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 19, 2010 -> 12:36 PM) Greg this post doesn't make a lick of sense. You're comparing Ozzie to the real world? I'm not a butt kisser I did the equivalent of what Ozzie said at work: Client: I want you to get this project done by an earlier deadline, also I want it done a certain way Me: I'm gonna do it the way I want, and f*** you if you don't like it! If you don't like it then just don't bill my work. ...I'd expect to be fired within hours. Nice response, I'll give you that. You are saying Ozzie blasted the clients and an employer could expect to be upset that an employee cussed out the client base, in this case the fan base. I can see your point on that. I guess if you look at it that way, yes that could be a fireable offense. I'm too tired now to come up with a counter argument, but I'll think on it. I could simply say sports are different. I do like the fact he doesn't buttkiss up to Kenny. He does a bit to Jerry, but more than anything shows elderly jerry respect. I would like to respond to the poster who said Oz should think outside the box. Was it thinking outside the box in '05 letting all those guys throw complete games? Every other manager would have brought in the closer, maybe even set up men, then closers. Oz let them finish the game and we benefited that postseason by it and won it all. Was that thinking outside the box? Damn right. No other manager would ever have let guys all throw complete games like that. We got a WS title as a result partly of his thinking outside the box. And don't say I'm living in '05. I reallize you all think that anyway. My point I feel is valid example of him thinking outside the box and it's the first one that came to my mind.

Theories? Why do the White Sox fade in Aug/Sept. every year?
greg775 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 12:06 AM) Maybe we can find Ozzie a new career as an NFL head coach? Or at least in the NL where his managerial style is most suited, I wouldn't be surprised if he had success there at all. Unfortunately, there's no way for us to change to the NL, as close as Selig and JR are. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first year of the Ozzie era we've played NL ball. We've generally had plodders who run station to station and hit a lot of home runs. I would suspect after this season we'll go back to long ball emphasis with a batch of Beckham, Rios and Flowers doubles thrown in there. -
Baseball is a funny game. I'm not saying it will happen, but it would be so funny if we were to sweep KC and Minnesota, flying high after beating us 7 of the last 10, loses the next 3. If the shoe were on the other foot, I could see that happening. Had the Sox won seven of 10 vs. Minnie and had a four-game lead, we promptly lose all 3 to KC and they sweep. Something freaky like that would be right up the Sox alley. So why not have it reversed? That would be sooo cool.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 02:51 AM) This game was so huge. For the moment, I think the season was saved. A sweep and it would've been a wrap. We gotta take care of business against the Royals. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 02:55 AM) I know I keep piling on but 21 hits and Kotsay with an 0-fer. Keep starting him Ozzie. *shakes head* Amen to the first post! Didn't Kotsay go 3-for-5 with two ribbies and two runs scored just a couple days ago? How come I was pretty much told to quit beating a dead horse and mentioning Jenks a couple weeks ago, yet this Kotsay stuff goes on and on and on. People told me they very well know my position on Jenks. Well we know your position on Kotsay. Kotsay sucks. He is pure horses***. He should not be on the roster. Pretty much everyone on Soxtalk including me does not want him on the team. Do you ever tire of writing this? I stopped on Jenks to give people a f***ing break but this Kotsay stuff is a f***ing broken record and won't stop. He stinks. We know already!!!! He also isn't going anywhere the rest of this season unless he gets hurt. He won't be on the team next year. Fast forward to then if you would.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 19, 2010 -> 08:39 PM) Just because it's something no manager would ever do doesn't mean it's not the right thing to do to win a game. Managers in all sports tend to be conservative and not go outside of the classic game box...because if they go outside the box and it fails, they get blamed...but if they do what has been done for 75 years and it fails, they won't get blamed because that's what everyone else does. So ... what manager do you want to go outside of the classic game box? LaRussa and his batting the pitcher eighth is really innovative and has really helped them win pennants. I mean because Kotsay is up in the fifth inning and we all hate Kotsay, Oz should do what no manager in baseball would consider ... pinch hitting for a starter halfway through a game. This Kotsay stuff is so old. He goes 3-for-5 the other day with two ribbies and two runs scored and the venom was worse than ever on him even that night.

Sox @ Twins, Thursday, 8/19, M56 v The Stache

QUOTE (WinorDie88 @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 02:38 AM) I'm sorry, but in the first game, there were two terrible managerial decisions made. Letting Kotsay hit vs a LHP in the 5th, and keeping Thornton in for a 3rd inning.. No manager in baseball pinch hits for a starter in the fifth inning. Give me a break. Blame Gavin for pitching like s***. -

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 02:46 AM) HUGE lift - on to KC to beat their AAA squad. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 02:51 AM) No DeJesus, Guillen or Pods. Do they have anyone left that can hit? QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 02:57 AM) Anything but a sweep would be a major failure. Get ready for a major failure then. The Royals split with the Yankees in a 4-game set last weekend in KC. Yes split. And KC took 2 of 3 from the Tribe. Actually the team has been playing well of late, kind of like when we went into Baltimore. 2 of 3 would be very nice. 3 would be awesome. Losing all 3 would be not good. Losing 2 would be major buzzkill. -
What kind of tactician do you want? I see on here in some game threads people want pinch hitters in the fifth f***ing inning. People want to pull our established starters in the fourth or fifth. No manager does such a thing. People want to bring in relievers for lefty/righty matchups and start that parade with one out in the sixth inning. Sometimes even in the fifth. It's one thing if you want to blame Guillen for the Thome/Kotsay mess and the theory behind smallball of this year's team and his lineups which some people think would magically get better if some other guy was manager. It's another when you say you want a "tactician" yet the technical things people ask for in game threads are just silly, things no manager would ever do. This guy has used Jenks, Putz and Thornton late and they've all failed to some degree. What tactics do you want??

We should all give our predictions every night. That way later we can get praised or blasted. Mine: Minnesota 11, Chicago 3. Not sure what I'll predict for the KC series. That's a series we should really truly should win, if not sweep. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 19, 2010 -> 09:24 PM) It's the devil you know versus the devil you don't. What are the odds that there is a great motivator of men and tactician of baseball sitting around undiscovered on some other team's roster awaiting plucking? The Royals found a great one in Trey Hillman. And now they have the mighty Ned Yost. These managers are all the same. But a new face will give fans somebody new to b**** about at least.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 19, 2010 -> 09:04 PM) It sure is. He/she will most likely realize we play in a launching pad and not Petco Park and try to use that to our advantage. I thought this year was the first year we went to the speed thing. In his whole tenure, we've just been a plodding home run hitting club. People b****ed mightily about the station to station thing, now they are b****ing about the bunting and the NL speed thing. And this experiment won't last long considering our 1-2 in the order have been Pierre and Omar, who are not long term solutions to anything. It has been nice to see guys go from first to third on singles this year, but we're still not winning anything of significance.

greg775 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 19, 2010 -> 09:06 PM) Greg, it was a facetious comment made towards the poster whom he quoted, when he said along the lines of "I hope everyone who loves the Twins goes down on the plane with them when it inevitably crashes." It may have been a bit over the top, but the initial statement wasn't better and is arguably questioning the level of allegiance these fans have to the White Sox. Just because White Sox fans are critical of the team and are generally snarky and sarcastic and pissed off when the Sox lose doesn't mean they suddenly aren't fans of the team and are fans of the Twins. OK. Like Caufield, the topic kind of creeped me out, though, and made me think the board had hit a new low. Fair enough. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 19, 2010 -> 02:34 PM) COol, i hope you die in a car crash on the way to work! FUn? This board is beyond hope. -
It's going to be neat when we do get a new manager. I'm going to enjoy all the criticism of the new guy cause there will be criticism ... every single game. People on here have it down pat. You must agree the new manager will be criticized daily as well, don' t you? Ozzie wouldn't play Thome every game.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Aug 19, 2010 -> 08:30 PM) How would you manage the bullpen they way they are performing other than use Thornton and a rookie? Considering Jenks health, a bullpen arm at the trade deadline would help more than another bat. Who knows, the rookie might end up being the closer this season. Amazing how Coop always gets a free pass. The manager is and always will be the easiest target. They can be blamed for stuff in victories (and always are on here; people ranted daily about him playing Kotsay even in the 25-5 stretch) and of course in losses. My question is: OK, guys. Jim Thome is available after this season. Do you want him back?

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Aug 19, 2010 -> 08:22 PM) But they did in game 163. Yeah that was awesome. I agree. But we lose that game in Minnesota. We barely won it in the Cell. But I'll take it. -
QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Aug 19, 2010 -> 01:54 PM) The Twins have made a couple of stupid plays this series - one of them was Kubel inexplicably trying to stretch a single into a double last night and running into the second out with a man on third. Liriano also tried to start an impossible double play with a clear out at home. Exactly right. We didn't win the game but they made some bonehead plays that had me thinking we SHOULD win. Baltimore had some really bad plays as well. And the O's kicked our ass.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 19, 2010 -> 04:50 PM) If the Twins make the playoffs and the Sox don't, as much as I hate the Twins, I think I'm gonna have to root for them just so Jim Thome can finally win that ring that Joe Table cost him back in the 90s. I want to win it so maybe teams will get fired up when they play them and regular pounding of us might end.
