  1. Glad both guys are OK. Careers have ended on plays like that. Seemingly unavoidable when you have the speed of a Moncada. Just hope it never happens.
  2. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 1, 2017 -> 04:02 AM) There are also things to like about Davidson besides the power, He does use all fields. He is not strictly a pull hitter . He also made adjustments that have obviously paid off in his hit tool. He may never get the K rate below 25% but I think he'll become a more selective hitter as he learns the league. HR's still are the most effective way to get runs . I'd think being a first-round draft pick would have the stat people in his corner, but boy oh boy I found out what people think of Matt. I just wonder how they'd feel about him if he was one of the guys acquired in all the trades this year. On a team this wretched, if I had to pick a jersey to buy/wear for this horrific last-place season, I'd wear the jersey of Matt Davidson. OK, Jose Abreu, but Davidson would be in my top five picks for jersey.
  3. Trump has had an awful lot of turnover on his staff. This Scaramucci guy had to get fired in record time, even for Trump. This is embarrassing, Mr. Prez.
  4. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 1, 2017 -> 03:17 AM) Abreu and Davidson in THE 9TH! Sox come back from a 6-0 deficit to win 7-6. We can still win this thing ! El Rockin is what MLB is all about. The best fan ever. El Rockin I hope I can buy you a hot dog some day at a game. You are a fan IMO! You'd love this team if it was in last place and had the most losses of any team in the AL. Oh wait we are in last place with the most losses in the AL. El Rockin is MVP of this board this year! That award should be given at season's end. I'd rank Lipman in contention for second and PTATC for third place.
  5. Good victory over the Blue Jays; looks like the fans were having fun during the comeback and watching the walk-off ninth. Shields sucks again, but ... Matt blasts No. 22 and raps a game-winning single up the middle. Abreu comes through. Moncada avoids serious injury according to the X-rays. Fun times at Guaranteed Rate Field tonight for the fans who watched some summer Monday night baseball. Sox fever; catch it.
  6. QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 11:56 PM) If Davidson could play an average 3B he'd be a plus 1-2 WAR player. Another Matt fan here? Cool. Two in the club. Good job Mr. Davidson. Another home run, 22, creeping u closer to 30 and another game-winning hit for a wretched ballclub. Since I've been convinced by the board that Matt is nothing, I looked up if he's already earned his MLB pension. Answer is yes. Good for matt. Rule says: "MLB players must play 43 days in the majors to earn a minimum $34,000 annual pension plan. Just one day in the majors gets them lifetime healthcare coverage. After 10 years in the big leagues, benefits grow to $100,000 annually." No matter what a free 34,000 a year and lifetime healthcare; not a bad start to go with his minimum salary of 500,000 or so. Keep it truckin Matt. Prove 'em all wrong.
  7. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Aug 1, 2017 -> 04:16 AM) It's nice to see he hasn't turned out to be a total bust. Maybe you didn't mean it that way, but geez, that's pretty weak sauce/praise of Matt. How bout some love for game-winning Matt! Good job, Mr. Davidson. No matter what happens in your career you'll always remember having the game-winning hit two games in a row. You da man, Matt Davidson. Keep it up and prove the naysayers wrong.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 11:18 PM) Greg, are Chris Carter and Pedro Alvarez successful big leaguers? Compare the walk totals of Matt, with say, Joey Gallo and Schwarber, per at bat. What stands out about his game defensively? Is he a good baserunner? You guys win. Davidson is a non prospect. I move on to the next argument at some point. I will be interested to see as an addendum how quickly you guys give up on Burger if ever if he doesn't look so hot in peripheral stats after 300 at bats.
  9. QUOTE (mac9001 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 09:03 PM) The difference between Davidson and whomever we call up next is Davidson never deserved major league at bat's anyway. Well, as a first round draft pick I'd say he deserves MLB at bats, a look so to say. I guess I'm wrong from what I've read on here, but lets say the guy could hit 35 home runs a year minimum with the prpoer at bats for the next 5 seasons. Whose career would compare at that point? Almost 200 home runs in the bigs, not so bad. I do think many first rounders deserve a look, although Fields like witesoxfan said was a first rounder and CJ Henry too. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 09:22 PM) Greg, remember Josh Fields? He came up as a rookie in 2007 in what was a lost year for the Sox and slugged 23 homers in 100 games. Over 600 plate appearances, that would have been around 33 homers. It was a slightly better offensive environment 10 years ago, but he came with similar red flags - not a ton of walks, higher strikeout rate, a low average, mediocre defense, not much speed. He ended up becoming irrelevant very quickly because he couldn't make the adjustments necessary as well as some issues dealing with the environment of a big league clubhouse. Hell, Chris Carter for the Brewers (and former Sox farm hand) led the National League in home runs last year. The Brewers didn't even offer him a contract this past winter because his flaws are so pronounced. Point being, a counting number might be "sexy" but it could be very, very empty. If a slap hitter puts up a .300 average, that's good! But let's add context - he doesn't walk, he doesn't hit for power, and doesn't steal bases, and he doesn't play the field very well. So we're looking at a guy who is putting up a .300/.330/.370 line. That kind of player has value, but it's better served as a bench piece. You get a flawed player who still adds value to the team. Everything needs context. Simply saying "if x-player hits y homers, people will be celebrating" is absolutely wrong. If said player does it with a good average, good plate discipline, and good defense, then absolutely, they will be singing praise. If it's a 30 homer season with a low average, not many walks, a ton of strikeouts, mediocre defense, and no discernible speed on the basepaths, people are going to be very cautious moving forward with that player. Well, your invoking the name of Fields wins you this argument at least temporarily. Yes Fields was a first round draft pick also. Yes Fields did have the 23 home run season right off the bat then sucked big time. Your identifying Shields as a possible clone does indeed win you this argument. Cause if he indeed is the next Fields, then he blows. In a debate, no question, the revelation of Shields as a comparison or precedent case if you will, gives you the victory in this argument. If I start thinking of Davidson as Fields I will definitely despise him, soon, rather than have hopes he is a 35 homer guy the next 5 seasons minimum. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 10:32 PM) Gotta remember Greg lives in like a 2-3 week fandom window. Davidson hit a walk off dinger yesterday and therefore is one the of the Sox greats and should be treated as such. Moncada is hitting .100 for the last couple weeks and is therefore a bust. I'm not down on Moncada. You making that up? I'm just upset that the darlings we get in trades are going to get all sorts of support on here and a guy like Davidson (who also was a first rounder; I'd think the first round cliche would help him with fans) will draw yawns even if he hits 30 homers this year. My position for the record is I'm against the rebuild but as a "fan" I have the right to cheer for the product if and when it succeeds no matter if I supported the move to begin with. I worshiped Ozzie so to speak but continued following the team upon his not getting an extension and bolting for Miami. I have nothing against a potential outfield of Eloy, Robert and Rutherford with Q or somebody else at DH. I have nothing against an infield of Burger, TA, Moncada and Abreu and Collins catching and all those arms in the rotation. I don't know where you got my Moncada hate from. I'll never understand many fans always wanting the unknown over what is known.
  10. QUOTE (mac9001 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 04:46 PM) Moustakas has a career K-rate of 15%, Matt Davidson is at 39.1% so far this year. They are in no way comparable. Moustakas was always a within reach of being a relatively decent hitter with a slight change to his approach and a little luck. Davidson needs to mash HRs at elite rates just to just to stay relevant offensively. He's one bad 10 game slump away from being irrelevant offensively and he's yet to prove he's capable of providing any value defensively. Hope you judge our precious prospects as harshly after 300 or so at bats. I think it would be so cool for Davidson to hit 30 home runs and have people laugh at him like that's nothing. Please hit 30 home runs. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 04:53 PM) Just looking at Davidson's stats tell everything. He has only walked 16 times in 86 games and has 124 K's. That is not a good or sustainable mlb ratio for a player who does not make alot of contact. His stats tell everything in his first season in the majors. OK, please judge all our prospects the same way. Oh wait, Davidson I guess is old at 26. I can understand only being excited about the prospects, but I stand by what I say if he hits 30 home runs that is a very very nice figure for a first-year player. Obviously i forgot about Judge and some of the other rookies in saying he's rookie of the year if he gets to 30 hrs, but my gosh I can't understand the double standard on here. I guarantee you if Rutherford hits 30 home runs his first year or Robert or any one of our darling prospects people will overlook the bad statgeek categories and only praise the prospect and Hahn. It's all up to Davidson to help me out here, get up to 30 home runs instead of staying stuck at 21 the final eight weeks.
  11. QUOTE (Tony @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 05:48 AM) Stop asking the same question when you don't get the answer you want. It's been answered multiple times, you're choosing not to accept the answer. LOL. You sound like one of those attorneys on a TV show screaming object at the judge. My gosh it's no fun having a contrary opinion on here. Do you realize how inappropriate what you just said to me is? QUOTE (mac9001 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 05:50 AM) I'll buy him the 2nd round. But the odds are highly against his current HR rate continuing and by all indications he's been lucky to hit .240. So far there's nothing to indicate he's likely to have sustained major league success. At least you'd buy him a round as well. Cheers to you, Mac. Trying to get some love for a rookie on here.
  12. QUOTE (mac9001 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 05:44 AM) At the rate Davidson is striking out he'll likely be hitting .180 or less soon. His HR to flyball rate is also uncharacteristically high. There's nothing about his current stats that indicates its sustainable. I'd put his odds of being waived at about 50% buy this time next year. What if he gets sufficient at bats the next eight weeks to hit 30 homers in his rookie season. No props at all? A stern shake of your head saying, 'he's a stiff?' Just curious. Part of my argument is giving Davidson the 30 homers and what you'd think of him then. I'd buy him a beer in a bar for sure.
  13. QUOTE (Tony @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 05:39 AM) Aaron Judge has 33 HR's and is posting a 1.066 OPS. But that's what happens when you only are exposed to White Sox and Royals baseball. Oh, and Jose Abreu hit 30 HRs as a rookie. 36, actually. Good stat on Abreu. I think he should be part of the rebuilt team as well. You need vets to win pennants to go with the young guys. Back to Davidson. I am flabbergasted by this current argument how I'm getting no support for Davidson. My FINAL ATTEMPT as I have to go to bed. Let's say Davidson's name was Robert or Rutherford. Let's say either of them had the exact same stats right now in their debut season. Let's say Robert or Rutherford did finish with 30 dongs and the same statgeek (no offense) stats. Exact same. What would you be saying about Robert or Ruthford? My guess is you and everybody on here would be doing handstands in glee for those guys.
  14. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 05:31 AM) Yes, due to reasons I stated in an earlier post. He is a replacement level player as of right now. OMG. You are going to criticize a 26 year old rookie who hits 30 home runs in his first showing in the bigs? I love Moncada, but lets say over the next eight weeks he gets about 8 hits and continues to hit .100. Would u dare criticize him? Don't you see the cliche aspect of what you are saying? All these recent trades and these players we got are beloved. Davidson 'could' hit 30 fricking home runs in his debut season? If he does, my gosh, he deserves rookie of the year. How many rookies hit 30 fricking home runs? Cmon people, does nobody support me on this??
  15. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 04:20 AM) Burger is 21 years old right now and projects to hit for solid average, play passable defense and have good pop. I expect more from him than we get from Davidson. Hopefully he delivers. Davidson is a 26 year old who is currently a replacement level player. Outside of home runs he is not a very good all around player right now, so yes, I will criticize him. Your evaluation is totally wrong and is not how a front office views talent in the modern MLB. Now is fine. Are u going to criticize him if he pops nine more home runs and hits 30 in limited at bats?
  16. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 04:02 AM) You are ignoring any of davidsons other stats outside of home runs. A .291 OBP is not good. He does not hit for average, does not get on base and is a below average defensive player. I will criticize any of our prospects if they statistically aren't up to par. It's his first shot at the big leagues for gosh sakes. First shot. If he hits 30 home runs he should be rookie of the year candidate.
  17. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 03:40 AM) Home runs ignore a larger statistical examination of the player. Davidson does not hit for average, draw walks or play decent defense. Should he get the chance during a rebuild? Of course, but I'm not expecting him to be a part of our longer term future at this point. Proves my point. Let's say Burger is the identical same player his first season with the Sox. Exact same. You can't tell me you wouldn't be ecstatic with Burger cause of the hype.
  18. QUOTE (Tony @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 03:35 AM) At least we are at a point where you admit you're OK ignoring facts and data. I seem to remember people on this board saying Frazier had a lot of value on the trade market with his .202 BA. I'm just saying this euphoria over the "name" prospects can be sickening when a guy like Davidson in limited at bats "could" still whack 30 home runs. I don't care about any secondary stats. I sure hope he gets to 30 to see what people are saying about him. You can't tell me if Robert, Rutherford, Burger ever approach 30 homers in the majors they won't get way more love than Davidson. How many people on here even consider Davidson a decent prospect right now? Not many. But 30 homer production in limited at bats suggests he should be hyped as well.
  19. QUOTE (Tony @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 11:58 PM) He came into today with a -0.2 WAR. With his 20 HRs he still has a OPS of .763. He plays marginal defense and will be 27 when the season opens in 2017. He has been included in many of the potential lineups in this thread for next season, so I have zero idea where you claim "no interest in him being in the lineup next year" You make things up to take things to the extreme, but it's simply false. Cmon Tony. Nobody's high on Davidson like they are those recent acquisitions. Like I said if Eloy hit 30 homers and hit .230 like Davidson is gonna do there'd be a proverbial parade on here. I don't care really about anything right now with Davidson cept 30 home runs. He should play enough to reach that mark and cmon 30 home runs? He should be talked about as much as any prospect if he bangs 30 homers.
  20. This is why I laugh so much at the cliches out there regarding this rebuild. Look, Davidson has 21 home runs. He conceivably could hit 30 this year, s*** there are 8 weeks to go. If he hit 30 home runs is everybody gonna still be yawning about Davidson?? He gets absolutely no buzz, no interest in him being a possible stud in the future. No interest in him being in the lineup next year. It's all Burger for 3B, etc. Davidson is not a sexy name but what if Moncada was storming toward 30 homers or Rutherford or Eloy? People would be going nuts all over!! Look folks, Davidson given the proper number at bats is gonna hit 30 home runs this year. Yawn time?
  21. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 07:55 PM) Bye bye steroid guy. No tears here. He was horrid until this season but of course everybody credits him for this season and praises him for bringing back minimal return. However I am on record as saying the Melkman won me over!! I do applaud him forever for taking that ball off the chin HARD, staying in the box and getting a hit. In a season where his team is this pathetic, it told me a lot that rich Melky was willing to stay in the game after getting his jaw rattled like that. MELKY is da man. Before this year I despised him however.
  22. Sox finally got a hit. And Rodon is pitching well. Aside from that, wow, this team blows.
  23. So U.S. blasts China over not stopping North Korea's bulls***. North Korea says it can and will attack the US. US says we will sanction Russia and North Korea and China. More importantly, after North Korea's latest threats to attack us ... This from CNN: Continuing another trend, the US on Saturday sent two B-1 bombers from Andersen Air Force Base in Guam on a 10-hour round trip over the Korean Peninsula in what the US Pacific Air Forces called a direct response to the North Korean missile test. The B-1s teamed up with Japanese and South Korean fighter jets to test "combined capabilities" during the mission, the US military said in a statement. Folks we are going to wake up one morning to something pretty radical. I wouldn't discount us dropping some bombs on their leader's headquarters trying to kill him. I can see Trump's reasoning. They flat out are saying they are going to nuke us. We HAVE to protect ourselves and kill him first. I would prefer issuing a warning to Kim Jong-Un and say next missile test, you can expect immediate retaliation in the form of immediate violence of some king. It's all up to you. This is heading toward conflict, folks, severe military contact. And I don't like what I've heard about China's Army. The minute they decide to come on over and attack our mainland, I'm not liking that at all.
  24. QUOTE (Knackattack @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 04:31 PM) I haven't really read that he is a "free swinger", I've seen way more accounts of people saying he strikes out looking a lot. Eventually he will learn to foul some of them off but I'd much rather he K looking at a fringe strike than missing a slider in the dirt I kind of agree. I'm sick of the Tank approach to hitting where guys frankly swing at everything. Even Anderson seems to do that. I kind of agree with knackattack. It seems to me you can't convince free swingers to take pitches. At least Moncada's style has him laying off a lot of stuff a la Frank Thomas. I'd suggest with Moncada's obvious talent I'd rather go this route.
  25. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 02:02 PM) Of course not. He had the sage Ron Schueler at his side advising him back then. You remember Ron Schueler, don't you? He was the guy brought in by the genius owner after the 1990 season as the guy who, the owner explained to us at the time, would "get the team from Point B to Point C", meaning a championship. Reinsdorf fired the guy who got the team from "Point A to Point B" through successful drafts and trades that brought the team the likes of Thomas, Ventura, McDowell, Fernandez, Alvarez, Lance Johnson, Sosa, etc. But the genius owner deemed him unable to get the team to this "Point C" apparently because he wasn't very chummy in the office. Meanwhile, when a "Point C" opportunity presented itself in 1997 with the team only 3 1/2 games out of first place on July 31st, Point C general manager and the genius owner went in the direction of the infamous "White Flag" trade. And Point C general manager would go onto never getting the team to Point C, ironically. Still wonder to this day if Point A to Point B general manager could have done so. Excellent post. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 04:33 PM) Five years after the deal I did a long, historical story on that day and the impact at that time on the franchise. Here is the link for any interested: http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/rwas/in...y=2&id=1528 Amazing, must read article. The White Flag situation was despicable then and according to Lipman's beautiful writing and research, will always be remembered as a horrible part of our team's history. Good job on Caruso, White Sox. He really was a star. I'm amazed this board has so many front office lovers when except for the beautiful, delightful, stupendous 2005, our organization blows chunks. The front office lovers can believe all our trades this time around have been great. Obviously I now want the trades to all be great as I WANT TO WIN. And I want more WS titles. I will wait and see on that. Lip Man's article is a must read. This is pure talent, Lipman. Good job.
