Reds Claim DJ Peterson from White Sox
QUOTE (Lillian @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 12:28 PM) This report and video from 2014 provides a good insight into just how highly he was regarded, back then: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/80378086/sea...shot-at-majors/ Let's just hope that most of our current top prospects don't suffer a similar fate. That's why I don't care about prospects and why I get excited when a guy like Davidson actually shows promise on a big league diamond. I'm totally outnumbered though, as prospects and the mystery of the future are sexy. And even though a guy like Davidson had some incredible moments this season and was headed for 30 home runs before he got hurt, he's considered a bum because his advanced stats suck. No mention of the fact he might improve and be able to build on a 30 home run season. I truly hope you rebuild people are correct and our organization dominates the AL for years to come.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 02:34 PM) My solution is to open diplomatic relations with another country. Work out a peace agreement. This idea that American has had an "anti-war policy" towards NK is totally wrong. Like I said, the only hope is to actually let China and Russia solve this issue and there's no reason to believe they care. They'll just wait and see what happens and respond in whatever is in their best interests to take over the world. Scary. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 02:40 PM) Dude, North Korea isn't just another country. It's run a pyscopathic dictator. This idea of negotiated peace is absurd. They want to become a serious nuclear power and will do so until they have the nuclear capabilities to hit mainland US. No amount of aid or sanctions will change that. Exactly and this dictator may want to go out in a blaze of glory. Why wouldn't he? If things start getting toasty for him ever, instead of shooting himself in the head he blows up Guam, blows up South Korea and blows up the US Mainland. We either need China's help in this escalating situation fast or somehow develop a defense system in which we can blow the nukes out of the sky. We're f***ed. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 02:51 PM) So your answer is to be held hostage by a madman forever? And put the mainland US at risk? Is that really what you're saying? I don't think you're taking this threat seriously. The day Kim feels his days are numbered, whether driven by us, or China, or another vested party, who is to say he doesn't launch some nukes at the US assuming he has the capability? This guy is not a rationale human being living in a rationale world. He kills on the regular to retain his grip on power and he just may want to go out in a blaze of glory assuming he knows that power will soon be lost. Under no circumstance should we allow him to further develop his nuclear capabilities. This is a real fear of mine. But there is no way the USA can solve this problem. Jong Un hates America and you can bet his ultimate goal is to hit us with nukes. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 04:05 PM) I haven't read the ENTIRE thread so I don't know if the answer is in there somewhere but here's my question... Does anyone know what North Korea ultimately WANTS? Do they want to rule the world? Cuz that ain't happening. Do they want to be accepted as a major power? Cuz that ain't happening either. Or do they just want the entire Korean peninsula? Cuz that ain't happening either. Good questions. I think they simply want to be on the same plane as countries with nukes. The ability to hit the USA with nukes. The problem is with a madman like Jong Un, at any point he can say, 'f*** it; I'm launching some nukes at America' just for the hell of it.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 05:45 PM) Hopefully cooler heads can prevail and loss of life can be prevented More than loss of life, but the end of life as we know it. Once nukes start falling you are talking millions upon millions of people dying and many countries/locales unable to sustain life any more because of nuclear fallout. Again, the question is, does Russia or China care. If they do not care about this new world about to be thrust upon us, it truly could be the end of the world as we know it. Trump and Jong Un have the power to get it started.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 02:24 PM) I don't have any more problem with NK having a nuclear bomb than any other country. Nobody else is threatening to use them. NK is telling us to our face they will bomb Guam, they will bomb us. Hawaii is getting prepared for a nuke being thrown at them in which they'll have 20 minutes to respond. This is a whole new ballgame. The tone of the NY Times article pissed me off today. It said Trump's comments led to NK issuing a threat toward Guam. Trump sucks we all know that, but if some media are going to imply N. Korea is reasonable at all in this area, this is almost treasonous. It's also scary to think NK not only will lob nukes at us, Hawaii and Guam but you can bet sell the nukes to somebody who will immediately use them on us.

White Sox winner
That's our rare winning formula say once out of every 7 games. I fully expect us to lose 6 of 7 the rest of the season. The formula is to once every seven games hit the s*** out of the ball and survive like tonight, 8-5. Only hope for regular wins is Rodon or Friday's starter dominating a game. Right now here's how I'd rate our team. Starting pitching: D-minus. Bullpen: F. Lineup: D to D-minus. Defense: D to D-minus. Baserunning: F. Managing: D to D-minus.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 06:23 AM) Nuclear fallout is 100x more likely to impact China, Eastern Russia and Japan than the USA. Then I wish during a summit they'd explain that and get China on board. And Russia on board. Though Russia hates us even more now and China doesn't give a flip about the USA. I wonder what the odds are that within 3 years at least 2 countries are completely destroyed by human beings and inhabitable. My guess is N and S Korea will be wiped off the map and we can only hope the USA is unscathed. But if there's any fallout affecting Russia or China they'd most assuredly send nukes our way as well. Not a pretty picture.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 02:04 AM) This will keep up until finally the inevitable happens. Whether it is this year, next year, 10 years or longer it is going to happen soon enough. In my opinion, the tipping point is long since gone. They have the nukes. It is already way too late. But what we really need now is the partisan blame in place so we all have our political marching orders, because THAT is all that matters here. This is very very astute and very scary. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 03:20 AM) 3. Negotiate. In good faith this time. Make a deal where they give up some things, perhaps a portion of their missile technology, in exchange for aid. Then actually keep up that deal. I don't think they want to negotiate anything involving their nukes. Jong Un doesn't care about sanctions as long as he is comfy. These crazy leaders only want personal gratification. He doesn't care about his people. That's why it's in China and Russia's hands. And they seem to be enjoying the fracas, figuring the USA is a sitting duck for nukes.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 03:32 AM) So. What's your solution. Guys, you consider greg a moron but please tell me I'm wrong here. You can't. The solution... The only solution (and it won't happen). TRUMP: Pleads with Russia and China to have an emergency summit in which we will tell them our plans of blowing N. Korea off the map unless this can be resolved. On the final day of the summit, invite Kim Jong Un to attend. I would think he'd come and not think we simply were using it as an excuse to assassinate him. At the Summit, get China and Russia to negotiate a solution. It's up to them this time. Do they care or do they secretly want USA and N. Korea to take part in thermonuclear war in which they hope nuclear fallout does not affect their countries at all, just the USA and the Koreas. Without the help of China and Russia, N. Korea is going to escalate and fire some nukes our way and at that point, it's all over.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 01:34 AM) All of their rhetoric, their positions, their desire to not be dead. The regular citizens have no say and I think Kim Jong Un knows he's not going to be living a long life so might as well go out with a bang and kill millions of Americans and South Koreans. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 01:38 AM) But the one guy calling the shots is a bit unpredictable. He may think nuking the US is a pretty big trophy he wouldn't mind taking with him on his way to meet his maker. Exactly. And I firmly believe one morning we're gonna wake up to reports several nukes are on the way to the USA. It's going to be mass panic and I think could be the end of the world as we know it. If those nukes hit US soil, WTF are we gonna do? QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 02:04 AM) Now they have an estimated 60 warheads and are quickly working towards the easiest parts which is delivering them to where they need to go. They are flat out telling us what they plan to do with the missiles, and still we pretend it isn't real, and instead roll over for them as if they were a child throwing a temper tantrum. Even if they aren't the ones pushing the button to launch, they will be selling the missiles and technology to those who will, assuming they haven't done so already. Millions of people will die because of the situation the United States has actively allowed to happen. This is a great post. We are in deep deep s***, folks. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 9, 2017 -> 03:23 AM) Somehow, cooler heads have to prevail from those three entities, along with the new South Korean government, that has been caught in the middle on THAAD since Ms. Park was impeached. You say "somehow." I pray there is a way. For the first time ever I see an end of the world scenario here. It's all set up too perfectly. A moron president of the USA in Trump; a psycho in Jong Un, and two powers, China and Russia, who have no interest in cleaning this up for some reason. To the pacifistic people ... what would China do if N. Korea was uttering this s*** to them about how they ARE GOING TO attack? What would Russia do? We are in trouble folks.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 8, 2017 -> 07:47 PM) Trump gets a folder full of positive news about himself twice a day It’s known as the “propaganda document" s*** like this is why I'm much more concerned about Trump actually having unilateral control over thousands of nuclear warheads than NK potentially having a nuclear weapon at some point in the future. I'm a lot more worried about the North Korean leader. He is a powerderkeg just dying to flick some nukes at the USA and South Korea. All he has to do to be remembered forever is start the war that begins the end of humanity as we know it. He's nutty enough to do it. If he sends a nuke our way, we will literally blow that country off the map and that means S. Korea will be blown off the map too. At that point China and Russia decide what to do. If the North Korean nukes cause a lot of damage in the USA ... wow.

Sox vs 'Stros
How embarrasing for the Stros. We actually won. Good to see Anderson go 2-5; Delmonico get a hit and walk; Moncada get a hit and two walks; Avi goes 2-5 and is still just above .300 at .304. Smith continuing to look like a big leaguer at least with two hits 4 RBI and a homer. Engel with the defense. Horrible pitching as usual. These are the kind of games we'll win once every 5 or 6 games. Where our bats click and we outscore somebody. About the only way we can win unless Rodon is on or the new guy who'll pitch Friday.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (Sonik22 @ Aug 8, 2017 -> 08:48 PM) This has gone from being a "yeah it'll never happen though" situation to "this is f***ing scary" rather quickly... I must pat myself on the back here since everybody thinks I am never spot on any issue. I've been worried about this a long time and expressed my worries on this board. This is the powerderkeg, folks. This is the issue that figures to start the end of the world as we know it. Only solution believe it or not, is China and Russia and they don't seem too concerned at all.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
This probably would be best in another thread, but it's scary how quickly things could change ... in a blink of an eye the world could change forever as we know it. This is not the best matchup either: the ultra aggressive, ruthless businessman, make quick forceful decisions Donald Trump against the aggressive, ruthless, morally corrupt Kim Jong Un. Cooler heads prevail here? Dunno bout that.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 8, 2017 -> 04:16 PM) US analysts believe they've miniaturized their warhead and can mount it on an ICBM now https://twitter.com/washingtonpost/status/894954486762008576 Some good posts in this thread. Guys, nobody wants war, but it's time to play War Games over this issue. Would Russia and China agree to a meeting with Trump now in which Trump tells them that this is crisis mode? He tells them that we have been issued a direct warning by Kim that North Korea is going to punish us for the sanctions. We have taken Kim's warning seriously. We are going to tell him to dismantle all nukes now or we are prepared to drop bombs on North Korea now in an attempt to hit all their plants and kill Kim Jong Un. Yes, this means Kim probably immediately bombs South Korea and begins what could be the end of the world as we know it. Kim has specifically threatened us. He has nukes now and we do not have the technology to blow them out of the sky and protect ourselves. What are we supposed to do? What if he was threatening China like this? What would China do? Are we supposed to sit back and say, 'Oh Kim is bluffing. He's not going to attack the U.S. because he knows that will be the end, that we'll blow North Korea off the map and he will die.' I don't see how we can sit back and relax here. Kim is arguably insane and knows odds are he's not going to lead a long life if he continues to be this outspoken and aggressive. What better way to go out than fire some nukes at the U.S. and end the world as we know it? How can we sit back and do nothing? Hopefully our military people are good enough and spy well enough to know actually what's going on in N. Korea and if indeed they are planning a surprise launch of nukes at the USA. Why no emergency meeting of USA, Russia and China in which we tell those folks, look, we have to do something. Fact: We've been threatened by Kim. He flat out says he's going to gain revenge. How can we sit back and do nothing? If Kim wants to start the war that ends the world he must be stopped. It's either kill him or sit back and wait and see if he's bluffing. One thing for sure. It's going to be the worst day in American history when we wake up to the news a nuclear warhead has been spotted on the way to the USA and is going to hit land within 24 hours and there's nothing we can do about it.

Matt Davidson to DL, Avi Garcia back
QUOTE (ron883 @ Aug 8, 2017 -> 05:59 PM) You must have loved white sox-era Adam Dunn if you like Matt Davidson this much I tend to support guys who provide 'moments.' I'm not saying he's the greatest thing ever, but he definitely was one of the best players on the team this season. In his first full season he raked some big-time home runs. Davidson and Avi arguably have several of the top 10 highlight moments of the season. As far as 'potential' Davidson definitely showed that. I despised Dunn but he was a veteran. I realize Davidson sucks and his advanced stats suck and project him to be a flop, but I do know he's had some of the team's Top 10 moments of a dreadful season.

Matt Davidson to DL, Avi Garcia back
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 8, 2017 -> 04:51 PM) Matt Davidson must be the most celebrated .2 fWAR player in Sox history. Get well soon but meh. If anything this allows the Sox to try Yolmer more at 3B down the stretch. Another guy who for whatever reason is not well liked on this board. Was on pace for 30 homer season. I know, his advanced stats suck and will always suck. If somebody else got hurt, ruining a productive season, there'd be a ton of sympathy. Have you seen some of Davidson's bombs this season? Crushed. Definite highlights in one of the worst seasons in Sox history. This all can drive a person crazy. You don't need to tell me how bad Davidson is BTW. I've read all your advanced stat posts. Yeah, he sucks. I know.
-
Avi Garcia to the DL
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 7, 2017 -> 10:23 PM) +1 Wouldn't want to actually win a few more games. I'm being serious. There is zero reason to rush him back. Keep losing. We've made it this far. Might as well go for the #1 spot. Adding a #1 pick to this farm system, not to mention all the additional bonus pool money, is bonkers. The bonkers part is that the #1 overall pick will probably slide in at at #3 in the system behind Eloy and Kopech. drool. Ugh. Let Avi play in the bigs now.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
OK. Trump should be fired (oh wait we can't just fire him). Why? Because he has been caught in a huge lie. Trump before he became a presidential candidate tweeted that nobody should ever take vacation. He said if you enjoy your work and are committed to it, what's the problem? Just work. He lied. He takes many vacations. Also he specifically blasted Barack for taking time off. He said he would never take time off. Now, look. When you get caught in a red-faced flat out lie, there should be repercussions. Some media member needs to cite his tweets of the past and call him on it. Now that media member will get lambasted and perhaps kicked out of the White House but it must be done. We can't have our president flat out trolling the country which he has done. I realize politicians all lie, but rarely is it this blatant. Fire Mr. Trump. he is a liar.

Delmonico promoted to big league club
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 6, 2017 -> 06:30 PM) I can't believe people actually want abandon ship with Anderson in year one of our rebuild. I don't want to abandon him. But the Sox should tell him this offseason that in spite of his nice contract, his playing time will be determined by whether he becomes a better on base percentage guy and if he cleans it up defensively. The guy proved last year he has glove potential. So work on it this offseason or let the guy we just acquired start at short next year and have Anderson learn how to play baseball in the minors for the final bad year of the rebuild. He has to improve at the plate where he has shown potential (10 homers this year not bad; lotta doubles) and more importantly settle down defensively. I hate to say it, but his nice contract appears to have hurt him as well as the personal tragedy in his life. The tragedy gives him a free pass on his horrible play this season. But next season he needs to improve a lot and try to put the horrible tragedy behind him. I expect him to hit .285 with 20 home runs, 84 RBI and cut his errors in half.

Tebow
QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Aug 7, 2017 -> 01:14 AM) This is going to sound like a troll idea, but here goes. Deep breath, you guys are going to *crush* me. What would be the downside of trading for Tim Tebow and bringing him up in late August or early September? It would (obviously) be 1000% a marketing move. Upside would be generating revenue for the team through ticket sales that could be used towards big ticket signings in the future. But on a team that's as terrible as this one, what is the downside really? Main argument is that we wouldn't want to be viewed as using celebrity power for ticket sales and a loss of respectibility. I would definitely do it. He's not stealing at bats from any prospects in the OF as long as we have room for Delmonico somewhere every day. Bill Veeck would approve. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 7, 2017 -> 02:02 AM) Too disrespectful to the sport...the Sox never brought up Michael Jordan. This would be more of an Eddie Gaedel/Minoso sideshow. Didn't Minoso get a hit at age 60 or something? I don't know if it would be as bad as Eddie Gaedel.

Melky Cabrera Traded To Royals
Probably just coincidence but the Royals haven't been playing well since the Melky came aboard. If they are committed to playing Gordon every day, the Melkster doesn't really help them much cause Bonifacio was doing a Melky-like job playing every day. I think they are going to play Gordon almost every day so that means Melky replaces Bonifacio who wasn't that bad as a regular.
-
Eloy Jimenez Calls His Shot
Eloy definitely passes the eye test as does Moncada and some of the pitching candidates for the rotation in the future. I'd really be surprised if Eloy flopped. I sure hope we get a catcher who passes the can't miss eye test and third baseman (I'm taking your guys word for it that Davidson is a stiff and won't cut it) and DH as well (Delmonico?)

Sox vs Sawks
QUOTE (harkness @ Aug 6, 2017 -> 01:23 AM) I'm not sure ive seen a team lose this much.... like 2 wins since the all star break? I can't remember anything like this. It's not hyperbole to say the current squad the way it is composed is one of the worst in baseball history. The starting rotation is so bad it assures no more than 20 wins the second half. Rinse repeat statement on the current bullpen. You really only have a chance right now, a chance, when Rodon is pitching or if Miguel happens to have a "good Miguel" night, which have become very rare. It's like KU football right now and the last several years. If "somehow" KU happened to play a good game it still would lose because of a blocked punt or pick six or fumble returned for a TD or blocked extra point. If the Sox happen(ed) to play a good game they'd normally still lose cause of getting picked off base or an error on a simple fly ball or bunting taking them out of an inning. Between 100 and 110 losses. How many is up to conjecture.
-
Sox vs Sawks
Tonight's game was pretty last-placeish from a White Sox standpoint. What a truly horrendous and dull baseball game.

**2017 Films Thread** (Beware of spoilers)
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 11:01 PM) The Big Sick is the best movie this summer. Not even close, imo. For action or comic fans, Spider-Man or Wonder Woman. I need to check out the Big Sick. What's your problem with Apes? You didn't think it was wonderful? Chicago's own Richard Roeper gave it an A-minus after giving Dawn an A and he also liked the initial Rise. I may need psychological help as I'm just a huge fan of the Ape trilogy. Just really enjoyed the three movies. Also thought Baby Driver was cool. Is the Big Sick good cause of acting? What's the hook on that movie?
