Kopech will have a chance to win a rotation spot next spring
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 08:05 PM) Your hyperbole gets real old. This is nowhere near a 120 loss team with or without our prospects being called up. Why? Because there has only been one 120 loss team since the turn of the 20th century. I'm not the first to mention 120 losses on here. And guess what? With this bullpen, it's a 110-120 loss team.

QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 07:53 PM) Giolito too. I forgot about him. Nasty. I do think we should not let our future studs play on 120 loss teams. Keep them in the minors until we at least have the possibility of .500. But hey, I want to win now so I will accept the rushing of players if that's what it takes.

Kopech will have a chance to win a rotation spot next spring
QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 07:28 PM) I've been telling you guys, the org is not comfortable with next year being a trainwreck at the major league level. They want to win in 2018, not so bad that theyll sell out and go ALL IN, but the 2019 draft is not a focus point. Expect moves this offseason to help the 2018 squad. They'll probably wind up being patient so as to not be accused of rushing guys and ruining the rebuild with impatience. I bet they want to win, but will appease Jerry by telling him to be patient and ready for a title in 2019. Just one more year of baseball hell. Alexei, what are the organizations plans for the bullpen if what you say is true. That bullpen will blow 80 percent of the games we happen to lead. That bullpen will have to be rebuilt before we can dream of .500.

Kopech will have a chance to win a rotation spot next spring
Let's say Kopech starts. We'd have Rodon and Kopech to start the rotation with Lopez. Isn't that potentially 3 pretty good starters? Isn't it better than the trash say the Royals will throw out there? Unfortunately it looks like Cleveland is ready to go on a Braves' like run of division titles. They are really good, folks, so I guess this rebuild is timed pretty well. But ... with 3 good starters minimum, pick up a veteran who can actually pitch, f*** that's a good four man rotation. Add to that you got an infield of Abreu, Moncada, TA and Davidson, that's not so awful. Flame away. If we have to lose 120 games the next two seasons, fine, but I maintain we'll have so many players expected to contribute to our next title team on the big league roster that all that losing will not be that helpful. Unless Lopez is a total flameout, the rotation could be at least better than the Royals and Twins and Tigers. I realize the bullpen as is is so bad it would ultimately make us an 100 loss team unless we worked on that. Maybe that's the key. The bullpen is so bad we're stuck at 120 losses no matter what, but I like our rotation.

Ongoing storm disaster thread
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 04:45 PM) I have a wedding to go to in Houston this weekend. My Thursday morning flight was canceled earlier, I'm trying to find a new one but I'm having a hell of a time. I'm in the wedding party but the only other options I was given to switch to get in late Friday night which would mean I'd miss the rehearsal. Other options I'm considering is just biting the bullet and paying a big sum for another flight Friday morning or flying into Austin and renting a car. The groom says the area where the wedding is was mostly unaffected so all things are a go at the moment. Keep us posted Omar. Man, that is crazy timing. I'm still wondering with so many of those highways under water (and yet to drain) and all the danger of roads caving in, etc (as at least one has done) how the hell you can navigate to get to the area of the wedding? I mean Houston is normally total gridlock anyway. When you land at Hobby or Intercontinental I would wonder how the hell you would be able to navigate the floodwaters to the wedding. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 05:05 PM) I am pretty sure we have had this debate from time to time, but realistically with as many people who put themselves in harms way of natural disasters, there isn't a way to make things fully safe from 50 inches of rain everywhere that is at risk for this. I never thought of that but you are right. It poured 50 inches of rain there with no letup. I mean Lawrence, Ks., would be underwater. It would have to be. What would happen in Chicagoland if a storm just wouldn't move out and dropped 50 inches of water straight down on Chicago? Good point.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
The Japan thing is scary. What if that bomb had detonated? The war to end all wars would have begun. You think I'm wrong? Donnie Trump is president, folks. I keep saying Kim may want to go out in a blaze of glory. What about Trump? He's kind of unstable IMO. He's 70 or so and has not that many years left himself. That said WTF is Kim Jong-Un doing?? Sending a bomb over land?? Some presidents or countries might have responded in kind with a bomb hitting North Korea.

Rating Coop
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 03:05 PM) It's amazing just how bulletproof Coop is with the fan base. No other coach has ever ripped fans for not showing up more than he has. He gets all the credit for any success his pitchers have, and gets no blame when they suck. Every other coach and manager, it's pretty much the opposite. All the blame when they suck, it's all the player when they do well. A guy goes down to the minors and starts throwing strikes, comes back and Coop is a genius. A guy sucks with the White Sox and goes on and becomes a decent pitcher elsewhere...not Coop's fault. IMO, the reality is somewhere in the middle, he's a good pitching coach, but not this treasure he's made out to be. Sports are full of unfair cliches. As you said, Cooper is a genius, case closed. There are other things to debate, but not this one. You cited good examples in your other post. Cooper is untouchable; he's the best says the cliche and that's that. Meanwhile, hitting coaches? Hit or miss. I find when nobody knows who the guy is, like our current coach, not as much criticism. But if he's "known" like former major leaguer Greg Walker, he is considered a total clown. Again, Cooper is OK, but it's definitely all cliche. The fan base worships Don Cooper and that's that. And yes, it's pretty obvious he's abrasive at best, a jerk at worst. Whatever ... it is what it is (had to conclude this cliche post with a cliche).

8/27 White Sox Winner and recent run of solid pitching
Guys: I don't care what anybody says. I am in baseball love with Matt Davidson and Avi Garcia. And congrats Mr. Giolito! Take a bow. Gawd, I love Davidson and Avi.

McGregor vs Mayweather
QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Aug 27, 2017 -> 06:31 PM) I'm not sure I agree with this assessment of the fight. Mayweather had a plan. He wanted to take the fight deep. Why? Because he didn't think he could beat McGregor with an early knockout. I'm sure if he thought he could come out and overpower McGregor and knock him out in 2 or 3 rounds, he would have. There was never a doubt that Mayweather would win on points if it went the distance. That's pretty much any fight he fights. The first 3 rounds were all McGregor. He landed some decent shots, and he didn't expose himself to shots from Mayweather. Of course, Mayweather wasn't really throwing much. Part of that is strategy. Let the less conditioned guy punch himself out. Part of that was McGregor's awkward style. He fought from an MMA distance - meaning the spacing between the two was the distance he is used to having so he can deliver strikes with his legs. In rounds 4-6, Mayweather closed the distance and started moving forward. McGregor didn't really have an effective plan for this - not sure if he really expected it as Mayweather hasn't fought that way in any recent fights. I'm not sure McGregor's corner really helped him here either. He should have been working the body more and trying to land some uppercuts because Mayweather kept ducking his head. This is where McGregor's muscle memory really hurt him. He kept resorting to hammer punches and locking up with Mayweather when he turned his back rather than pounding the body. Mayweather won rounds 4-6, but he didn't exactly dominate them. The tide turned in rounds 7 and 8. McGregor didn't have much on his punches anymore, and Mayweather could see that McGregor was tiring. In the 9th round, it became obvious to me that the fight wasn't going the distance, as McGregor was in constant retreat. I'm not sure why they didn't tell him to go to the ropes. Even with his back to them, I'm not sure Mayweather could have knocked him out, and McGregor would have saved some energy. I'm surprised McGregor did as well as he did. This is in large part to Mayweather making the decision to engage in the fight. I'm sure he could have fought the defensive fight and won 12 rounds to zero had he wanted. But, he wanted the knockout, and as someone who was disappointed by the Canelo and Pacquiao fights, I'm glad he did that. I agree with your assessment 100 percent. I think Mayweather executed his plan to perfection as you said. McGregor by all accounts actually did OK. I did notice Floyd and his dad trying to stifle laughter at McGregor's presser after the match, however, as McGregor really wanted to fight the last two rounds, thinking he'd get a final wind. I think Floyd and dad knew Floyd executed his game plan to perfection and Floyd would have battered McGregor the final two rounds. Just look at Floyd after the decision was announced. He was fresh and attacking; McGregor was gassed. But I agree with you it wasn't a bad fight at all. McGregor was not going to win if Floyd executed his game plan to perfection and he did. Trying to knock him out early would have been wrong. There always would have been a chance of 40 year old Floyd punching himself out and tiring himself later, or even worse, getting caught with something worse than that first round uppercut he got hit with. I disagree Mayweather was a bum as stephen a smith sort of indicated. I thought he looked pretty good.

Ongoing storm disaster thread
Prayers for all. Damn I feel horrible about this. There's a picture on twitter of old folks in an nursing home simply sitting in water on couches. I did have a question for those of you in Houston. I've been watching the news and I think they said virtually all highways are impassable. The TV guy maybe out of habit was talking about weather during the "rush" on Monday. My question is ... with rain scheduled through Wednesday are you basically stuck in your homes in Houston? Even if your street somehow isn't under water, is there anywhere you can go? My guess is no because so many areas are under water. Houston is one of the most congested, most populated areas in the country. You hear horror stories about traffic there when the roads are dry. Just total horror stories. So what happens now? Are all those people confined to their homes for a week minimum?? I mean if the roads are impassable and I read the highways are impassable are you just stuck?? Will neighbors band together and share food? Peace.

McGregor vs Mayweather
QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 27, 2017 -> 02:31 AM) 4 people have bet $1 million so they can get $250,000 Pretty cool to have that much money that you can make an easy 250,000 on a sure bet like this. I always wondered why gamblers don't just pick their spots like this. I mean why go out there and play hi level blackjack and lose your ass like Rodman and Jordan did? If Michael just waited for something like this, go to several casinos and bet 2 million at each casino and make a ton of cash? There are few sure things but this was a sure thing. Well 95 percent a sure thing. I guess Floyd could have had cramps or thrown the fight or something but if you bet up to 10 million at different casinos there was a 95 percent chance you were going to net an easy return on your money. Funny how Vegas sports books made a ton of money on this. Most chumps bet Conor because of the odds. They couldn't resist putting a few hundred on Conor in hopes of winning so much more. Those 300, 400, 500 dollar bets add up for the books.

McGregor vs Mayweather
It's really late at night but really enjoyed the ESPN interviews of McGregor and Floyd. They said so much I can't even summarize, but it was pretty cool to hear McGregor especially.

Illinois High School Football Thread
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 26, 2017 -> 05:42 PM) Rice's QB looks horrible. Only watched the second half. He got replaced for the final drive. Probably didn't help their OL was getting demolished. Anyways that's not going to work in the offense they run. Rice probably should start the junior and play the senior QB on defense somewhere. The senior must be a decent athlete if he split time at QB in the opener. That second half was mighty ugly for Rice, although holding Marist to 23 points is light years better than the defenses in the Badke era. Anybody surprised St. Laurence got smashed at home in the opener by Benet? I thought Laurence was gonna return to its old glory days. Maybe it's just the opener: anything can happen in openers.

Moncada to get MRI
I wonder if he needs a scope. You don't hear about baseball players needing clean up work on their knees that much. I wonder if they keep it quiet most offseasons. They must at least suspect something besides shin splints, right? Why do an MRI? Not trying to be an alarmist. I'm sure he'll be fine. Think he'll be shut down til spring training though?

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Aug 23, 2017 -> 05:52 PM) It's probably not the smartest idea to put a former cult member and someone who was charged with conspiracy to commit murder twenty feet behind the President. I didn't understand this post.

White Sox Winner !
Happy for Tim Anderson. I really can't believe Avi scored on that beautiful single, though. What a miserable throw. How could the 3B coach send Avi on that? He was barely rounding third when the LF got the ball. He should have calmly flung it home not rushed it ... but I'll take it of course. Happy for Moncada. I don't think he's getting a bad rap on Soxtalk. Some people have expressed concern but you know he's going to be a hitter. Don't care about Shields. Enjoyed the victory though.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 22, 2017 -> 08:15 PM) I thought the bigger takeaway was the timing of these things getting mass produced (i.e., during Jim Crow era and during the Civil Rights movement of the 60s). Any argument that these were made to honor the South or whatever other excuses proponents have, is disingenuous. These were built as a big F.U. to black people. I agree if we can trust the guy giving the history lesson there. Is he fake? I can't believe they put up those plastic fake monstrocities. Damn those statues look real. In reality they are as cheap as balloons.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 22, 2017 -> 04:35 PM) Good video at the link. Greg, you may want to check it out since you seemed aghast about the statue situation. Those cheap mass produced statues are weird. Get rid of them all now. That's so bizarre they are fake like that. Good video.

8/21/2017 Twins @ White Sox
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 22, 2017 -> 04:53 AM) I'm beginning to have my doubts about Mr. Fulmer given his control issues and his overall pitching motion. But Coop needs to work with him, right? It may be his only hope.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 22, 2017 -> 12:47 AM) Good god...the partisanship on this board is sickening. I think everyone in America should be an independent like me. That way you can just assess candidates on their own merit. For instance I am a former Republican conservative, yet in the pack of bad choices, I became a huge Bernie guy. I despised Hillary; saw Trump as a total rich chump and really didn't like anybody else except Biden, who wasn't running and McCain and Kasisch. Cmon folks, both major parties are crooked; both are awful. Become an independent and assess all presidential candidates in the future on their own merits, not party.

Man I love Delmonico. He swing SO hard. Looks like he has a major clue up there. Hope it continues.

8/21/2017 Twins @ White Sox
I love all the excuses for the Sox. He was rushed. We should have lost 2 more games so we could have taken who we really wanted. How bout the fact our system does not develop players??? I'd prefer keeping Carson on the big league team the rest of the year just to work with Cooper. Cooper who is arguably the BEST pitching coach can watch him, assess him and tell him what the f*** he needs to do in the offseason to reach his potential. No minor league coach can help Fulmer. It's Cooper and Cooper is the BIG LEAGUE pitching instructor. Cmon Sox ... don't send the kid back down. Have Cooper work with him for gawd sakes.

8/21/2017 Twins @ White Sox
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 22, 2017 -> 01:56 AM) I think it's fair to criticize if it's fair to praise him. Criticism for poor play even from a rookie in a rebuild is going to happen. Best you can do is make a folder and store those posts in it and recall them later when it turns out you are right or to destroy if you are wrong. I get the feeling their is at least 1 poster who does this who shall not be named. I am despised for my takes but even I do not judge Moncada on these meaningless early games in his career. He passes the eye test folks. He'll be a stud. Trust greg.

A Star* is Born
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Aug 21, 2017 -> 07:43 PM) For God's sake, just stop. I get sick of how bad our players are considered on this board. I thought it a fair question to assess some other guys and see if they suck, too. Can't believe that post caused this freak out. QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Aug 21, 2017 -> 08:15 PM) I don't know enough about the Royals on a day in and day out basis. But rough overview? I'd say if I'm the Sox I am passing on Cain as he's getting older at age like 31 or 32. He probably can fill a teams needs in the way a Melky does. He has no fit on the Sox or the Royals moving forward. Salvy to Davidson is about as apples to oranges as one can be. Savly is an All-Star catcher. That position doesn't historically produce well so when you get one they are super valuable. how you call a game, your relationships with pitchers, how you catch, frame, etc. Would welcome him on any team. Moose and Hosmer? Hosmer is having a great year. Again this isn't really about other teams. I'd rather be the Royals of 5 years ago and have these guys produce like they are at cheap. When they are becoming FA I think they cost too much compared to what their value is in return. He's a fine player. Not someone I'd want on the Sox at the pricetag hes gonna get. Those are all starters and good players. If the Sox were able to have production out of 4-5 guys like that on their rookie contracts I would be ecstatic. Moose, Hosmer, Salvy were all highly touted guys ... Nicky Delmonico, Yolmer and Saladino and Davidson were not.... The Sox will be more than fine if we have 4-5 of the guys in the minors produce as the royals had ... we can probably pencil in Moncada as a starter. we have Abreu ... now add in 2-4 more and we're cooking. I just don't think the names like Garcia, Sanchez, Davidson, Delmonico are those guys. Thanks. I'm surprised you think those Royals are good players, but glad to read this.

A Star* is Born
QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Aug 21, 2017 -> 08:16 PM) That's a totally fair point made there and agree with it. However I think a lot of times we as fans get caught up in a few good weeks by a player. Out of all these guys playing right now - we can't have more than 3 of them starting for us in 2020 if we are going for it (not counting catcher - not counting pitching) Abreu .... Avi ... Delmonico if you'd like - I don't have faith in Nicky, but that's fine. I'm fine with finding another few guys to be UTIL players as well ... L. Garcia, Saladino, Anderson I just get upset that sometimes the fan base thinks that a few good weeks out of Davidson or Nicky or Saladino equals their starting 2b or SS or whatever on a contending team. If you do get a chance I'd like you to assess Salvy Perez and Lorenzo Cain and Moustakas and Hosmer for me. Should they be starters? Are they worth a damn? My guess is they will come up lacking. I'd love to see your assessment of the NL all star roster. I'd think most of those guys suck and shouldn't be regulars. I do realize most of the Sox do suck, but I think Delmonico, Avi, the catchers, Moncada, Abreu, yes Davidson are actually not so bad. Perez by the way has 21 homers; Davidson has 22. "
