Serious question. Beaumont has no water. What do you do if you wake up and didn't fill the bathtubs with water and all the roads are flooded? So it's 9 a.m. and you have no water and no water will be coming for a while. The whole city is without water. What do you do? All this stuff is scary and sad both. I'm so spoiled if I wake up and can't take a shower I'd be pissed/inconvenienced beyond belief. We're talking no water to drink here and they say they don't know when there will be water. Some people don't stock up on bottled water for whatever reason.

sox marketing technique - acquiring attractive players
QUOTE (Wanne @ Aug 30, 2017 -> 06:43 PM) I know this sounds pretty ridiculous to say...but probably my biggest fear about Moncada is him getting too caught up in being "pretty" and turning into a prima donna. This thread is actually pretty funny...but even my gal commented on how many good looking young guys the Sox have...and she hates baseball. Ali was pretty and he's the "greatest of all time." Victor Ortiz is a good looking guy and he definitely turned prima donna, tried to kiss Floyd Mayweather in a title fight and got clocked. Funny thread but Bobby Jenks wasn't exactly a heartthrob and he was great.

QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 31, 2017 -> 04:24 PM) You're right, I do disagree. The Sox won't be a .500 team in 2018, but it will be a step forward. 76-86 would be a great season for a young team and mostly young rotation. If they happen to lose 90, it's not that much different. Kinda just depends on health and bullpen variance...and Renteria bunting. I don't see how you can avoid a historically bad Sox season if there's no plan to fix the bullpen yet. And I would doubt that's the plan. This team is destined to get two very very high draft picks before the rebuild starts to turn into contention.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 31, 2017 -> 04:12 PM) I know I've said this before and people can fire away again. If they have an awful season next year with that plan, the rebuild has failed and they will need to start again. If the rotation is Rodon, Lopez, Giolito and Kopech, all players they are counting on for the rebuild, they better not lose 90 games. They will struggle but they can't ALL struggle that badly. I agree. But I'm sure if those guys somehow are awful as they adjust to the bigs we'll have tons of excuses for them. We can point to Robin Ventura's horrific start to his career, wasn't he 2 for 50 or something like that; we can point to Avi taking many years. But let's say Lopez Giolito and Kopech are all as bad as Fulmer right now, wouldn't that be alarming? I'm already a believer that Rodon will be excellent next season.

Someones gotta do it: Sox @ Twins 8/30
Does Holland really belong on an MLB diamond? My gosh. Is he having one of the worst seasons by a starter in baseball history (for a guy the team has not replaced). Hyperbole? I doubt it. I'm talking about guys allowed to get hammered game after game and not replaced during the course of a season. He makes a mockery of the game of baseball. Geez. Cut the guy already.

The commentors on that Big lead story can be rude. That one person said they almost deserve what they got by staying. Give me a break. Nobody deserves that. Not everybody can flee. s***, you'd probably be fired by your job if you left in this day and age without the mandatory evacuation order. Like the writer said most people stay. Sure you can end up in a shelter but decisions are made and stuff happens.

Worth a read. This guy is in Houston, lives there and points out there have been a lot of dumb statements regarding the situation. They got a lot of rain, folks. http://thebiglead.com/2017/08/29/i-live-in...t-it-right-now/

Kopech will have a chance to win a rotation spot next spring
QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 10:07 PM) Not sure where you're getting this. I know I expect Giolito and Lopez to be on the opening day roster and many others have said the same thing. I think Kopech comes up after about 10 starts in AAA (assuming he's doing well) I actually do hope they attempt to compete next season, but not at the detriment to the rebuild. I don't think they'll be above .500 next year but I'll be upset if they tank the season by not having anyone reliable in the bullpen. Good. I like your sentiments. QUOTE (Tony @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 10:24 PM) You can maintain all you want. You're wrong. Good. I hope everybody wants the youngsters in the bigs as soon as possible.

Kopech will have a chance to win a rotation spot next spring
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 09:31 PM) The bullpen right now is as pathetic as I can ever remember seeing. The Sox are on pace to "only" lose 97 games. They have gone 14-22 since trading their two stud relievers in Robertson and Kahnle, which would also be a 97 loss pace. Where are those other 13-23 losses coming from? With Moncada, Giolito, and Lopez being up for the whole year plus a full year out of Rodon and another year of development for all the young players, something would have to go horribly wrong for this team to lose even 110 games. Not to mention 120, which as I stated before only one team had ever done. Do you really think next years team is going to be among the 5 worst in the history of baseball? Give me a break. Quit talking about s*** you don't have a clue on and go watch your precious Royals and be done with it. I amended it to between 110 and 120 losses unless they do something if they want to improve. I pointed out in the scenario presented the starting rotation would be very good but in this day and age if you went into next season with this bullpen yes they'd lose over 100 games. If the argument is 110 to 120 is too high would u at least agree it's a 105 loss team with this bullpen? As to where the losses come from, I'd suggest they'd pile up in April and continue from there. I guess if the Royals are total s*** and the Tigers total crap the Sox could conceivably go 10-9 or 9-10 against both which would cut into my 110 to 120 losses theory. I'd expect both Minnie and Cleveland to own us. Maybe to the tune of 15-4 or 14-5. I also could see the .500 scenario begin if the Sox as i said in the other post went with the 4 good young starters and add a veteran and also decide to rebuild the bullpen this offseason. Not sure who the lockdown closer is whom they could acquire but they start the bullpen rebuild if they wished. p.s. I maintain "most" fans on this site want our stud young pitchers to be in the minors all next season. It's part of the rebuild mystery. They don't want Giolito, Kopech, even Lopez anywhere near the majors next season. Rodon and four hacks and let the losses pile up. I hate to waste pitches on rodon's arm as well. I hope most of the projected stars all get a fresh start on Day One some April. By then poor Moncada and TA could be frazzled by a lotta losses.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 07:32 PM) Received a text from the groom that the wedding has been postponed, 30 minutes after I booked a new flight. Fortunately was able to get a full refund. Very very smart. I can't imagine Houston up and running by this weekend. QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 07:41 PM) Wow. Needless to be said, there are bigger concerns in this situation, but how do you postpone a wedding? Poor couple. I also would feel badly for the couple, but they have no choice. It's Tuesday and all their roads are flooded and impassable. People are still getting rescued for gosh sakes. QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 07:53 PM) Postponed, they don't have a new date yet but he said it will likely be in October. Smart move. If the catering companies, etc., don't understand I'd sue them. I mean there's a good chance they would have canceled anyway. I bet you the place the reception is at is probably underwater, or at least the parking lot. How can anybody get to work this week out there?

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 09:18 PM) I beg to differ I am pretty sure you are the first and only I read 120 losses in one of the threads, that's why it was on my mind.

Kopech will have a chance to win a rotation spot next spring
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 08:05 PM) Your hyperbole gets real old. This is nowhere near a 120 loss team with or without our prospects being called up. Why? Because there has only been one 120 loss team since the turn of the 20th century. I'm not the first to mention 120 losses on here. And guess what? With this bullpen, it's a 110-120 loss team.

Kopech will have a chance to win a rotation spot next spring
QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 07:53 PM) Giolito too. I forgot about him. Nasty. I do think we should not let our future studs play on 120 loss teams. Keep them in the minors until we at least have the possibility of .500. But hey, I want to win now so I will accept the rushing of players if that's what it takes.

Kopech will have a chance to win a rotation spot next spring
QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 07:28 PM) I've been telling you guys, the org is not comfortable with next year being a trainwreck at the major league level. They want to win in 2018, not so bad that theyll sell out and go ALL IN, but the 2019 draft is not a focus point. Expect moves this offseason to help the 2018 squad. They'll probably wind up being patient so as to not be accused of rushing guys and ruining the rebuild with impatience. I bet they want to win, but will appease Jerry by telling him to be patient and ready for a title in 2019. Just one more year of baseball hell. Alexei, what are the organizations plans for the bullpen if what you say is true. That bullpen will blow 80 percent of the games we happen to lead. That bullpen will have to be rebuilt before we can dream of .500.

Kopech will have a chance to win a rotation spot next spring
Let's say Kopech starts. We'd have Rodon and Kopech to start the rotation with Lopez. Isn't that potentially 3 pretty good starters? Isn't it better than the trash say the Royals will throw out there? Unfortunately it looks like Cleveland is ready to go on a Braves' like run of division titles. They are really good, folks, so I guess this rebuild is timed pretty well. But ... with 3 good starters minimum, pick up a veteran who can actually pitch, f*** that's a good four man rotation. Add to that you got an infield of Abreu, Moncada, TA and Davidson, that's not so awful. Flame away. If we have to lose 120 games the next two seasons, fine, but I maintain we'll have so many players expected to contribute to our next title team on the big league roster that all that losing will not be that helpful. Unless Lopez is a total flameout, the rotation could be at least better than the Royals and Twins and Tigers. I realize the bullpen as is is so bad it would ultimately make us an 100 loss team unless we worked on that. Maybe that's the key. The bullpen is so bad we're stuck at 120 losses no matter what, but I like our rotation.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 04:45 PM) I have a wedding to go to in Houston this weekend. My Thursday morning flight was canceled earlier, I'm trying to find a new one but I'm having a hell of a time. I'm in the wedding party but the only other options I was given to switch to get in late Friday night which would mean I'd miss the rehearsal. Other options I'm considering is just biting the bullet and paying a big sum for another flight Friday morning or flying into Austin and renting a car. The groom says the area where the wedding is was mostly unaffected so all things are a go at the moment. Keep us posted Omar. Man, that is crazy timing. I'm still wondering with so many of those highways under water (and yet to drain) and all the danger of roads caving in, etc (as at least one has done) how the hell you can navigate to get to the area of the wedding? I mean Houston is normally total gridlock anyway. When you land at Hobby or Intercontinental I would wonder how the hell you would be able to navigate the floodwaters to the wedding. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 05:05 PM) I am pretty sure we have had this debate from time to time, but realistically with as many people who put themselves in harms way of natural disasters, there isn't a way to make things fully safe from 50 inches of rain everywhere that is at risk for this. I never thought of that but you are right. It poured 50 inches of rain there with no letup. I mean Lawrence, Ks., would be underwater. It would have to be. What would happen in Chicagoland if a storm just wouldn't move out and dropped 50 inches of water straight down on Chicago? Good point.

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
The Japan thing is scary. What if that bomb had detonated? The war to end all wars would have begun. You think I'm wrong? Donnie Trump is president, folks. I keep saying Kim may want to go out in a blaze of glory. What about Trump? He's kind of unstable IMO. He's 70 or so and has not that many years left himself. That said WTF is Kim Jong-Un doing?? Sending a bomb over land?? Some presidents or countries might have responded in kind with a bomb hitting North Korea.

Rating Coop
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 03:05 PM) It's amazing just how bulletproof Coop is with the fan base. No other coach has ever ripped fans for not showing up more than he has. He gets all the credit for any success his pitchers have, and gets no blame when they suck. Every other coach and manager, it's pretty much the opposite. All the blame when they suck, it's all the player when they do well. A guy goes down to the minors and starts throwing strikes, comes back and Coop is a genius. A guy sucks with the White Sox and goes on and becomes a decent pitcher elsewhere...not Coop's fault. IMO, the reality is somewhere in the middle, he's a good pitching coach, but not this treasure he's made out to be. Sports are full of unfair cliches. As you said, Cooper is a genius, case closed. There are other things to debate, but not this one. You cited good examples in your other post. Cooper is untouchable; he's the best says the cliche and that's that. Meanwhile, hitting coaches? Hit or miss. I find when nobody knows who the guy is, like our current coach, not as much criticism. But if he's "known" like former major leaguer Greg Walker, he is considered a total clown. Again, Cooper is OK, but it's definitely all cliche. The fan base worships Don Cooper and that's that. And yes, it's pretty obvious he's abrasive at best, a jerk at worst. Whatever ... it is what it is (had to conclude this cliche post with a cliche).

McGregor vs Mayweather
QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Aug 27, 2017 -> 06:31 PM) I'm not sure I agree with this assessment of the fight. Mayweather had a plan. He wanted to take the fight deep. Why? Because he didn't think he could beat McGregor with an early knockout. I'm sure if he thought he could come out and overpower McGregor and knock him out in 2 or 3 rounds, he would have. There was never a doubt that Mayweather would win on points if it went the distance. That's pretty much any fight he fights. The first 3 rounds were all McGregor. He landed some decent shots, and he didn't expose himself to shots from Mayweather. Of course, Mayweather wasn't really throwing much. Part of that is strategy. Let the less conditioned guy punch himself out. Part of that was McGregor's awkward style. He fought from an MMA distance - meaning the spacing between the two was the distance he is used to having so he can deliver strikes with his legs. In rounds 4-6, Mayweather closed the distance and started moving forward. McGregor didn't really have an effective plan for this - not sure if he really expected it as Mayweather hasn't fought that way in any recent fights. I'm not sure McGregor's corner really helped him here either. He should have been working the body more and trying to land some uppercuts because Mayweather kept ducking his head. This is where McGregor's muscle memory really hurt him. He kept resorting to hammer punches and locking up with Mayweather when he turned his back rather than pounding the body. Mayweather won rounds 4-6, but he didn't exactly dominate them. The tide turned in rounds 7 and 8. McGregor didn't have much on his punches anymore, and Mayweather could see that McGregor was tiring. In the 9th round, it became obvious to me that the fight wasn't going the distance, as McGregor was in constant retreat. I'm not sure why they didn't tell him to go to the ropes. Even with his back to them, I'm not sure Mayweather could have knocked him out, and McGregor would have saved some energy. I'm surprised McGregor did as well as he did. This is in large part to Mayweather making the decision to engage in the fight. I'm sure he could have fought the defensive fight and won 12 rounds to zero had he wanted. But, he wanted the knockout, and as someone who was disappointed by the Canelo and Pacquiao fights, I'm glad he did that. I agree with your assessment 100 percent. I think Mayweather executed his plan to perfection as you said. McGregor by all accounts actually did OK. I did notice Floyd and his dad trying to stifle laughter at McGregor's presser after the match, however, as McGregor really wanted to fight the last two rounds, thinking he'd get a final wind. I think Floyd and dad knew Floyd executed his game plan to perfection and Floyd would have battered McGregor the final two rounds. Just look at Floyd after the decision was announced. He was fresh and attacking; McGregor was gassed. But I agree with you it wasn't a bad fight at all. McGregor was not going to win if Floyd executed his game plan to perfection and he did. Trying to knock him out early would have been wrong. There always would have been a chance of 40 year old Floyd punching himself out and tiring himself later, or even worse, getting caught with something worse than that first round uppercut he got hit with. I disagree Mayweather was a bum as stephen a smith sort of indicated. I thought he looked pretty good.

Prayers for all. Damn I feel horrible about this. There's a picture on twitter of old folks in an nursing home simply sitting in water on couches. I did have a question for those of you in Houston. I've been watching the news and I think they said virtually all highways are impassable. The TV guy maybe out of habit was talking about weather during the "rush" on Monday. My question is ... with rain scheduled through Wednesday are you basically stuck in your homes in Houston? Even if your street somehow isn't under water, is there anywhere you can go? My guess is no because so many areas are under water. Houston is one of the most congested, most populated areas in the country. You hear horror stories about traffic there when the roads are dry. Just total horror stories. So what happens now? Are all those people confined to their homes for a week minimum?? I mean if the roads are impassable and I read the highways are impassable are you just stuck?? Will neighbors band together and share food? Peace.

McGregor vs Mayweather
QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 27, 2017 -> 02:31 AM) 4 people have bet $1 million so they can get $250,000 Pretty cool to have that much money that you can make an easy 250,000 on a sure bet like this. I always wondered why gamblers don't just pick their spots like this. I mean why go out there and play hi level blackjack and lose your ass like Rodman and Jordan did? If Michael just waited for something like this, go to several casinos and bet 2 million at each casino and make a ton of cash? There are few sure things but this was a sure thing. Well 95 percent a sure thing. I guess Floyd could have had cramps or thrown the fight or something but if you bet up to 10 million at different casinos there was a 95 percent chance you were going to net an easy return on your money. Funny how Vegas sports books made a ton of money on this. Most chumps bet Conor because of the odds. They couldn't resist putting a few hundred on Conor in hopes of winning so much more. Those 300, 400, 500 dollar bets add up for the books.

McGregor vs Mayweather
It's really late at night but really enjoyed the ESPN interviews of McGregor and Floyd. They said so much I can't even summarize, but it was pretty cool to hear McGregor especially.
