Cleveland at Our Sox
LOL. I see we started Pelfrey tonight. I still say Fathom could do as well with a month of practice. Have there been 3 worst pitchers in a rotation in Sox history than Pelfrey, Holland and Shields? I'll put those three against any threesome.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 6, 2017 -> 05:33 AM) So your arguments are: 1.) Jerry prices parking and hot dogs too high. 2.) Jerry doesn't sign non-existent free agents when the team is rebuilding Sound, sound arguments. Not really so. I am offended that fans are all for Jerry saving money and us having a very low payroll. Want to stir people up on Soxtalk? Mention trying to sign somebody for some $$. I don't understand why Jerry makes your life miserable as a fan in terms of prices and you want to cut him a break and let him have a 40 million dollar payroll. This site is full of management lovers and I don't understand why. If it's because of 2005, say so. I might be able to embrace that, since I loved the title. Aside from that? Blah. I feel the Sox have a bunch of studs Hahn acquired and we should win someday, but there will still be a lotta work to do to win with the studs. They are gonna have to build a bullpen and build a defense to go with the bats. Without that we go nowhere. 2.) I don't see why he signed guys like Holland and Pelfrey and let his peeps acquire Shields. All three are offensively bad. I mean if we are purposely tanking, fine, but if that's so, baseball should at least fine the White Sox for making it obvious. That said ... GO SOX!

2017 Offseason White Sox News, Notes, and Tweets thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 7, 2017 -> 01:07 AM) It looks like he will be listening intently on offers this winter for Abreu and Avi. Thinks their contract and age in Abreu 's case don't match up well with their window. A lady wanted him to fire Coop. Coop will be around as long as he wants, although he has had medical issues again this year. If he ever leaves Curt Hassler would take his place. Wow. That means the rebuild is gonna take a long while if Abreu is too old. Their contract? Why would that matter? Why would some lady want Coop fired? Just cause he's abrasive?

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Wanne @ Sep 6, 2017 -> 12:43 AM) Joey Belle and Pudge Fisk say "Shaddup Greg"!!! You equate throwing money around willy-nilly (love that phrase btw) to being a good owner? Maybe Jerry should buy you a new attitude...your shtick has gotten pretty stale. And no...I'm not offended. Go be a Cub fan for crap sakes... Some of us don't trust Jerry or the front office. Many of you do. Do you gladly pay the cost of parking with a smile on your face? Do you gladly pay over 10 bucks for your hot dog and beer? Probably closer to 20. For that reason I want jerry to spend as well. Sorry if it's my "schtick." I'll give 'em credit if we dominate the 2000s or win a WS or two. Or win the AL a few seasons.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 03:33 PM) Do you ever get tired of repeating yourself in literally every single conspiracy-themed post? You know what? If the Sox payroll next year, for the team, is 15 million dollars, WHO THE HELL CARES? They are going to suck next year, get used to it now. It's part of the plan. And you know what? That's completely fine, they aren't ready to win. As for me this is the last time I'm going to respond or read any of your tripe. You are definitely the man, Lip Man, but I hate to see JR make a ton of money on teams this bad. Aren't you offended that he and his partners get all this $$$ while the fan has to pay 8 or 9 bucks, whatever it is for a hot dog and whatever it is for parking? I think Jerry should feel the pain of a rebuild as well as the fans. I'd hate a $15 million payroll knowing JR gets all that profit. QUOTE (Wanne @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 07:56 PM) That "Jerry is cheap" argument is ridiculously stale...good lord. Yet somehow...he still goes out and lands Robert. That being said and back to Avi...like many have stated...unless it's a very nice offer for Avi this offseason... I don't move him. If he continues this torrid pace next year...then you're looking at a nice return at deadline for someone that needs a bat. You don't trade him just for the fact of trading him. He's worked hard elevating his game...and still young. Not a bad problem to have whether you keep him or not and Sox are finally in a nice position to not be forced to make any deals. I think throughout his tenure there could be an argument he is cheap. I'm amazed so many fans seem to think the lower the payroll the better. It's like any significant contract is scorned right now during the rebuild. The Sox aren't moving as we have discussed ad nauseum so why shouldn't the Sox owner make less profit and have a high payroll to go with the Robert signing? Jerry should buy you frugal people a few drinks at least this offseason. He should meet you in the bar and thank u for your position. I'm serious by the way. A lot of cities would run an owner out of town for not having a high payroll in a city as big as Chicago.

Adam Engel
QUOTE (Lillian @ Sep 6, 2017 -> 12:20 AM) A guy with tools, but not really a very good baseball player, is one thing. But Engel has so much potential. Having had the opportunity to see him play, it is easy to see why the Sox have given him every opportunity to succeed, despite his poor offensive numbers. His defense is off the charts. I can't remember a better centerfielder on the Sox. He is right up there with Jim Landis and Ken Berry, from my kidhood days. He has plus-plus speed, great instincts, a good glove and a very good arm. Perhaps he just needs more time to learn how to hit. If there is any way that they can get hm to become even a .250 hitter, with power, which he certainly possess, he would be worth keeping in center, just for that Gold Glove in waiting. What do you think he needs to do to make better contact? I don't think you can learn how to hit when you hit as badly as Engel. I will say his defense is amazing though.

i am drunk 2017
You've never been this drunk ... A friend of mine got so drunk in Vegas he parked his car and forgot where he parked it. He took a cab home obviously to not drive drunk. He woke up with no clue where he parked it. He took 3 days off work and searched all the casino parking garages in the area he drank at. Couldn't find it. Had to report it stolen. Six months later cops called him, they found his car. It was in the parking garage of the Mirage. he was allowed 10 minutes to get all his stuff out of it. His computer was in there. Still working. Had clothes in there and lotsa stuff. Insurance company of course kept the car as they'd already given him the settlement.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 06:12 AM) Yep I see what you're saying: "I don't understand how any of this stuff works" I do understand how it works. I understand tanking, etc. This is a new phenomenon. You know it worked for the Cubs and 'may' work out for the Sixers in the NBA. But ... there are plenty of ways it can fail. You are basically getting rid of any proven productive player for prospects. I agree "on paper" we got some hella prospects. Eloy, Robert and Moncada and Rutherford and some of the pitchers excite me. But ... again this is a new phenomenon. Remember the White Sox stunk for several years but our manager was uh, Robin Ventura. THAT MATTERS, folks. We had Chris Sale and some other good players.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 04:10 AM) Greg. The first half of your post say that free agency is a fool's errand, and the second half says you want the Sox to be nuts in free agency. Can you please explain this? Yes. I wanted them to buy free agents the way they did in the past. They've never given the 7 year mega mega deal but they have acquired some free agents. For instance, Dye signed a two year deal. I forget what Rios signed, but I didn't like him. Dye worked out; guys like him. I mean I still don't care about Jerry's money, but even I don't like the 7 year deals. David Robertson signed a 4 year deal with the Sox. There are nuff of those kind of signings that I wanted to keep us competitive rather than a total rebuild. Dunn signed a four-year deal; that would have been good but he had that one historially bad season before he got his act together. Now if we could sign Hosmer for 4 years, he's young enough. But I don't want 7-8 years. But do you see what I am saying? I see no need for Jerry baby to have a 50 million dollar payroll next year, even if he did sign Robert.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 05:01 AM) And that contract is UNIVERSALLY considered a total disaster, despite the fact that Heyward is an above-average to elite defender by both scouting and advanced stats. Almost all of the mega contracts turn out to be disasters. I mean Detroit got rid of Verlander's contract but still had to pay some of it to the Astros. It's why I laugh whenever they talk about guys hitting free agency how much money they are going to get. The media here hasn't estimated what Hosmer is going to get but with 22 homers, 77 RBI and a .317 average, he'll get a ton of money. Astronomical amount. But after two years in his 7 year deal the team will desperately want to get rid of him. That's how it works. My stance on here is well known. I never wanted a rebuild. I wanted to spend, spend spend and stay competitive. Why? Jerry doesn't care about me paying 30 bucks for parking or whatever it is. Jerry doesn't care about me paying 9 bucks for a hot dog. Jerry doesn't give a s*** about my money; I don't care about his pocketbook. Just.Spend.Baby!

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 5, 2017 -> 02:50 AM) lol Have you read his life story? This guy was a can't miss prospect with the Padres I think it was. He hurt his arm; then missed a year after getting hit in the face. I'm telling you, the Sox have a lot of "can't miss" type prospects on the team. If we had to trade Avi for some more "can't miss" guys I wouldn't mind seeing Liriano get 580 at bats next season and see what he is. Don't some of you guys ever judge with the eye test? Liriano is a certifiable hulk of a specimin. U know, Rutherford could be a bust just as much as anybody. GO SOX!

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Sep 4, 2017 -> 10:40 PM) Past performance and WAR numbers for prior years are irrelevant. As Stone pointed out today, Avi lost weight and is getting to a lot of balls he didn't in prior years. His batting average has improved and he has had a lot of clutch hits. Today, Avi had outfield throw that nabbed a guy at second and another one where the tag just missed. At this point, I would not trade Avi for Jason Heyward. I can't stand the Cubs or Heyward anyway. I hope the Sox resign Avi. I like that player would like him to be part of the core moving forward. An outfield with Avi, Eloy and Luis Robert would be nice. I just read the awesome future sox report and Rutherford has been struggling. Avi and Abreu need to be part of our next WS team, folks. You can't win with all new guys. Why can't everybody see that? Why would you want to trade Avi when you've got that potential outfield of Eloy, Robert and Avi with either Rutherford at DH or one of the other Sox outfielders we have in the minors. I like what I've seen out of Liriano. Right now I guess you could (reluctantly) trade Avi this offseason and give Liriano 580 at bats and see what you've got there. If Liriano blows, Rutherford will be ready the following year. I hate to see Avi go, though, as I'd like he and Abreu to be the leaders of our WS teams. It's scary that Cleveland's future looks bright for a long time to come. At least Detroit and the Royals will be sucking. Twins figure to be pretty good but probably won't have the $$ to fill in the gaps. GO SOX!

Sox vs. Indians ( Sheilds / Bauer )
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 4, 2017 -> 08:21 PM) You are grounded For telling the truth in a game thread? They have a great team; ours is pathetic. The Indians took a while to get going but have woken up and appear primed to finish the job this year. The Sox are doing their thing, but it's currently a pathetic baseball team. p.s.: Any Rymer Liriano fans on here? He seems to attack the baseball

Sox vs. Indians ( Sheilds / Bauer )
QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 4, 2017 -> 07:58 PM) This series will have benches on the field. That'd be pretty dumb of Cleveland to get in a fight with the Sox and possibly derail their season if somebody gets hurt. Great teams do not need to fight pathetic teams to prove a point. If the Sox charge the mound, though, the Tribe will have to fight back.

September Call Ups
Is Rymer Liriano an intriguing prospect or a stiff? I've been reading on him. Was supposed to be a base stealing machine. Was a top Padre prospect. But hurt his arm. Out forever. Hit in face. Our forever. What an unforgiving game is baseball. A guy compared to Puig (I read it) who is about out of chances. Anybody high on Liriano at all?

The Korea Situation; It's Very Serious
Trump today blasted South Korea for thinking it can negotiate with North Korea. Trump chided China for N. Korea being an embarrassment to China, which has tried, Trump said, but failed to stop Kim's aggression in testing nukes. I'm convinced Trump wants to have military response but is probably being talked out of it for obvious reasons. I mean the minute we bomb select targets in North Korea, Kim blows up South Korea and Guam and Hawaii and all those deaths will be on the U.S. "leader." This remains scary. Don't you guys agree with me? Trump certainly wants to hit North Korea with military power of some sort. He still could do it, but I think he needs a plan because what I said will happen. There will be an awful response from Kim and millions of people will die in the places I mentioned including a lot of US troops who would be sitting ducks. I still say we're 70/30 something bad will happen soon regarding this situation. I wish it were 30/70 but you've got Kim, who is pretty much an aggressive asshole with no regard for human life, and you've got Trump, who is a rich businessman with a hot temper and not a lot of common sense who I think would like to drop some bombs on N. Korea.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 4, 2017 -> 06:41 AM) You don't think he's worthy of that?? That's peanuts today. That's Melky money. Are you saying 5/75 is way too much? You would go for 5/50? 5/60? He's not worth 10-15 mill a year in today's economy? Is that based only on the advanced stats?

Avi Hot streak
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 4, 2017 -> 12:56 AM) So what part of his approach do you like? He swings at terrible pitches and maintains a groundball swing path after five full seasons. "Barreling" the ball isn't an "approach," it's a "result." He's succeeding despite doing things that don't usually lead to success. Again, he may surprise us all and be the first guy ever to sustain a .390+ BABIP, but would you bet on it? He may finally learn to hit for 25+ HR power, but there's nothing to suggest he will at this point. A 3 win player is a nice player to have around. but if .395 BABIP Avi is a 3 win player, then normalized Avi is, AT BEST, league average. There's nothing wrong with a league average player, but you don't build around him when he's a year away from free agency. Look, I'm open to finding some evidence of something sustainable that changed with him -- I've just yet to see it. I just want what's best for this team and everything I've seen says is telling me this guy is a flash in the pan. No offense to you stat guys, but gol darn I'm glad the advanced stats don't interest me. me sees Avi; me likey Avi.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 4, 2017 -> 04:54 AM) Couldn't have said it better. Even being Avi's biggest supporter it would be wrong to extend him based on one good year . They jumped the gun on Anderson and it still may work out but still need a larger body of good performance to extend him. I don't know why you guys worry about spending Jerry's money so much. He'll be fine. Offer Avi 5 year extension at 75 million. If 15 mill a year isn't good enough, then let him walk when he's a free agent. But other than that, why not? He and Abreu will be nice pieces when we are good and NEED some true White Sox vets on the team!! You know .... you can let some guys walk. The Royals are doing it this year, letting Cain, Moose, Hosmer, Escobar, at least 3 of 'em walk. No sin in keeping Avi and seeing what happens during his FA year. If he won't take 14 or 15 mill a year for 5 year extension. Jerry must love you guys who hate spending his money.

There's a Game on Today
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 3, 2017 -> 07:48 PM) If you treat a Sox game like watching a sitcom where witty banter is the norm then Sox games can be entertaining. If you like actual baseball talk then perhaps your viewing experience is not as enjoyable. Things like Sox math , and Sticks and Stone and now the Kamka thing is a lot of silly filler but ,hey, that's entertainment !?! Bennetti and Stone are fine and at this point better than crabby Hawk and Stoney. I like Bennetti. His dumb jokes are OK IMO. I'd give him a B. Stoney an A and Hawk, whom I love, an F now. Too crabby. Giolito and Rodon. Wow. Two aces. I like it. Anderson ... way to wake up! Nearing .250. Avi had a rough game. I worship Avi. Want him badly to hit .320 to .335. Please do it Avi.

Avi Hot streak
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 3, 2017 -> 08:54 AM) Don't really agree with the strictly artificial. If it was so easy a lot more guys would be hitting .320 but hardly any do among the so many talented ball players in MLB. Is Avi the only one being so lucky or is it a product of hard work and making adjustments to his approach . He's the only lucky one obviously. Before I get in trouble, is it safe to say Avi has become a Sox talk whipping boy like Garland, Floyd and the others? Or are there enough Avi lovers that that's not the case yet? I'm starting to think he's another whipping boy and we best be rid of him to avoid all the ensuing arguments.

Avi Hot streak
QUOTE (Tony @ Sep 3, 2017 -> 03:38 PM) So based on your premise.......why would a team give the Sox ANY sort of value for Avi Garcia? Exactly. Why would anybody want Avi Garcia? We're stuck with him obviously according to that premise (green on the word stuck). But other teams know your stats. Avi will bring nothing in trade value if we go according to that initial premise of him being lucky.

sox marketing technique - acquiring attractive players
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 2, 2017 -> 10:48 PM) Funny what a minimum wage of half a million dollars a year can do for someone. Glad to see you tell it like it is. You make that kind of money you will find a perfect looking wife. Case closed.
