  1. QUOTE (Señor Ding-Dong @ Aug 20, 2017 -> 03:39 AM) He's got plenty of speed and athleticism, so range isn't the problem. I think it's mostly mental issues with him and perhaps to an extent his mechanics/fundamentals. He's learning and it all will pay off for him when we play meaningful games someday. All this is prep for him. He'll be OK. He has tools.
  2. I know we are rebuilding but the commish should step in and declare Holland unfit for MLB. It's making a farce of baseball. In the greg can be wrong category ... man I was wrong bout Saladino. I loved that guy. He is a miserable hitter. Glad my fave Avi got 2 hits tonight, but Anderson with a rare (of late) 0 for 5. Just getting caught up on the game. Wowsie, Holland is so bad. Fathom could line extra bases off him. Caulfield could whack a single off him.
  3. What about our rotation? If Rodon, Lopez and Kopech are ready, playing devil's advocate, why can't we build a real pitching staff around those guys and contend? The basis of this thread is we're supposed to hit next year. I will never understand why the rebuild requires us to win 65 games two years in a row minimum when a lot of these guys are "ready." Sign two veteran pitchers for 10 mill a year apiece like the Royals always do, get a few bullpen guys and uh, win?? Is it that hard to sniff .500 in this crap division? I know, it is. If this post angers you, please ignore it. Not meant to argue. I "get it." We're in a rebuild. We're supposed to lose. I'm just playing along with the first post that says we should hit next year. Well, 3 key pieces of the future are leading our rotation ... but they have to suck first before getting good? Modern baseball really fatigues me. If I'm running a team I never do not consider the possibility of winning.
  4. QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Aug 19, 2017 -> 12:37 AM) Dig deep enough, and the list of people who are truly worthy of a statue or monument would be pretty short. True. It's amazing it took this long to get rid of most of America's statues.
  5. All this stuff has taken the focus off North Korea. I'm really surprised/thankful cooler heads have maybe started to prevail. I really saw the point of no return and global thermonuclear war. Glad to see a calming of tensions a bit.
  6. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 08:03 PM) Well if he thinks a guy who rebelled against the Nazi's from within Italy in the late-30's is irredeemable I can only imagine how he feels about my relatives who were drafted into the Wehrmacht. I would love to hear the story of your relatives. Please share on here in long fashion or PM me the story, please. I am a student of history. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 08:45 PM) So now do all the FDR statues come down because of the Japanese internment camps during World War II and an unfaithful marriage? If that's the case, Jimmy Carter might be the only one left we can't assail, yet the president with probably the fewest statues/monuments/schools named after him other than GW Bush. And should President's Day be cancelled? Six states considering legislation to protect drivers who hit protestors http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/18/us/legislati...ters/index.html North Dakota because of the pipeline I would guess... (CNN)The death of Heather Heyer in Charlottesville, Virginia, has renewed focus on bills that surfaced this year in a half-dozen state legislatures that proposed limited protections for drivers who cause injury or death to protesters. None of the legislation has passed so far. Lawmakers in North Dakota, North Carolina, Florida, Tennessee and Texas proposed bills that would make it legal for drivers to hit protesters if the driver did not do so willfully, according to Mick Bullock, a spokesman for the National Conference of State Legislatures. A similar bill also was introduced in Rhode Island, according to the state General Assembly's website. Great takes Caulfield. Yes, Presidents Day should be canceled now cause of the fact some had slaves. Kill it. Yes we should look at all the statues and take them down if said President did something racist or particularly ominous/offensive. We have to at least consider each statue on its own merit now. It's crazy, but it's America now. Any president that had a slave cannot have a statue. Any person affiliated with the South in the Civil War cannot have a statue. Case closed.
  7. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 07:37 PM) Beyond that, no, Jose Abreu is not a super special player. He is a good hitter who does not play very good defense. Please do not consider this a fight. I really don't want to get in a fight about this. But I have a followup question/point. If he gets his 100 RBI for four seasons ... don't you think if a Rutherford, Robert, Eloy do that we'll be considering them stars? Just because they are the unknown prospects? I think Jose, who has been around here a while, is taken for granted somewhat. I consider him a star. His conventional numbers the last four years are pretty damn nice. That's interesting without steroids 30 is real real old now. I'm surprised the union, considering that, has agreed for its players to wait as long as they have to, to become free agents. I would think they'd want free agency much sooner considering careers are gonna be much shorter from now on.
  8. We probably should set a new national holiday when all the statues come down of anybody who had slaves. And rename the parks and different streets on that day. It might start to bring the country together except for the Nazis and screw them. Nobody's got any money but maybe try to find funds to erect new statues of more suitable people. March might be a good time in celebration of spring.
  9. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 07:33 PM) No, he's not special. He's an aging solid hitting DH who will likely see a steady decline in the coming years. I should probably start a Jose appreciation thread to see what everybody thinks but 100 RBI for four straight years if he makes it this year? That to me is pretty special. How many players in Sox history have done that? Is 30 years old really aging now? Is baseball becoming football? 30 used to be prime time for at least 6 more seasons. I'm really not trying to fight. I feel like Jose could be called "special" for sure. Nobody backing me on this? There hasn't been much talk about what kind of money he's gonna get for next season. I would assume 15 million a year would irritate many fans but 12 would be ok since he made 11 this year. I would think if you were ever going to trade him now is the time cause you could always re-sign him in 2020 when the team is good if you want.
  10. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 05:57 PM) Jose Abreu does not return "3-4 can't miss prospects". .294 with 23 homers, 75 RBI and OBP of .346 this season after three straight 100 RBI seasons. He could have 100 RBI four straight seasons. He's pretty damn special. OK, how bout 2-3 cant miss type prospects?
  11. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 04:48 PM) https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/9kkkby/l...-mount-rushmore intially titled "blow up", changed for obvious reasons after the fact. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainmen...0817-story.html winner of two silver stars on our side http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2017/08/16/jac...s-slave-owners/ rename Washington and Jackson park http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/15/politics/lin...ized/index.html Lincoln Memorial vandalized https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/201..._come_down.html tear down Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial ... I'm failing to see the difference between this and the ISIS destruction of Palmyra. Obviously one happened in a war, but the core principle of destroying history to better suit an ideological/political history is disturbing. That rename Washington and Jackson Park piece on TV was interesting. I'd recommend watching it to see this new movement in action. The guy is right. They must immediately be renamed and the Washington statue must be taken down. I'd say in terms of Washington just rename it for Harold Washington and rename Jackson park for Jesse Jackson and it'd be simple. You might call this trolling, but I call it partly tongue in cheek, but partly not. This is the trend now and you certainly don't want violence in Chicago over something as dumb as a park name or statue. Harold Washington and Jesse Jackson are worthy enough. As far as Mt. Rushmore, again, interesting. How can we honor presidents that had slaves? This is getting crazy for sure.
  12. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 05:19 PM) The team will be contending in 2020 and should be at least be semi competitive by 2019. Jose will be all of 32-33 years old. I think he'll be alright. But according to you he's not productive now, so I don't know. He's not a free agent til after the 2019 season. He makes 11 million this year. If the Sox are truly enjoying the rebuild in terms of saving dollars, wouldn't the front office trade him this winter for 3-4 more can't miss type prospects? Arbitration eligible, you'd figure he will have to be paid at least 15 million in 2018 and 2019. I guess they can make him an offer of 12 million by Dec. 1 but you'd think that's kind of an insult since the payroll is so low. The Sox, who figure to finish last again next year and arguably could suck in 2019, could save about 30 million bucks by trading Jose for prospects. Again, the fans love prospects and in this day and age the front office can play the "decline after the age of 30" card in explaining why they've traded Jose. Personally I think he should lead the team in 2020 but we are going to find out how much in love Jerry is with making money because Jose is ticketed for a nice payday this offseason. He didn't decide to enter the arbitration system not wanting to get a healthy raise over the projected 11.5 he was gonna make next year. Interesting ... will Jose be traded in a blockbuster this offseason, the argument being he's too old to be part of the rebuilt 2020 contending team?? But the sneaky reason saving cold hard cash?? You go from paying a guy 15 million to paying some replacement 500,000 the next couple seasons. If he's still good you could still try to bring him back via free agency in 2020. Hmmm.
  13. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 12:10 PM) False. The performance of Moncada, Lopez, Engel, L. Garcia, A. Garcia, and Delmonico matter now. You don't wait until you're projected to contend to test your prospects. You do it during a rebuild. So, when it comes time to contend those guys will be there if they have proved themselves...or they won't because they didn't. This is simple stuff. This is how a rebuild works. I think that's the case with the lower rated guys like Engel and Delmonico and your Saladinos and Leurys, etc. It's not fair but the case. But the big boys, the Eloy's and Moncadas ... I think even if Moncada hits .200 the rest of this season and again next season would be in the Opening Day lineup with a clean slate in April of 2019 when the team is supposed to be good. Maybe I'm wrong, though. I can't see them losing faith in one of the big boys while the team is mired in last place. QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 02:43 PM) However he's not there yet and I also think he will never get there without a different approach at the plate. ... My worry with Moncada is that he sits and watches too many pitches. It's nice to see patience but he needs to mix in some aggressive at bats. I am calling him a George Springer at best .... and more of Starlin Castro type (with walks) .... Reasonable post, but they used to say the same thing about Frank Thomas' approach. People wanted him to draw less walks. I think in the long run, Thomas' approach and Moncada's approach is the best. Way better than the Tim Anderson's.
  14. You think Lopez will be one of the many starter prospects Sox have that ultimately will be a setup or closer? Does he project to be as 7-8 inning dominant as Gio and Kopech and Cease and guys like that?
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 05:57 AM) Just the bringing up of the topic with the A______________N word and the President can trigger a Secret Service investigation, whether it's an online message board or not. Obviously, they have to quickly determine if there's a direct and tangible/realistic threat, but it's in that same category like "bomb/terrorist" anywhere around an airport/plane and "fire" in a crowded building or theatre. I killed my original post and if there's a problem i hope everybody kills their responses. Nobody is more peaceful and God loving than me.
  16. QUOTE (Tony @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 05:41 AM) You've been posting here for years and we've gone to battle many times. I'll give you credit, your "logic" continues to amaze me. Individual performance is literally the only reason to watch this team, and the Front Office would tell you the same thing. I contend though that if we are 10 games out of first at the end of next April, individual performance means very little. How can a player give optimal performance when the team is that bad? It has to affect the little things in your approach. Why move a runner when it doesn't matter? Just swing from the heels and try to homer. The young studs will put in the time and get used to pitching and hopefully do well enough. My point is, all that training will be put to the test when we are projected to be a good team. On April 1 of that season, whenever it is, is when the can't miss guys like Moncada, Robert, Eloy, etc., begin their trial periods. When it matters. I'm not saying Moncada can hit .111 and management will be satisfied but none of it really matters til the team is projected to be a contender. Then the apprenticeship is ova.
  17. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 18, 2017 -> 03:09 AM) Wow greg, I think you finally crossed the line. Wow man. Did u see Big Hurtin's post? He didn't threaten him but called the man garbage. These are emotional times.
  18. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 07:49 PM) The Royals will be blowing up their team unless ownership signs a bunch of dudes to ill advised contract extensions. Somebody's gonna pay Hosmer, Moustakas, Escobar and Cain? The question is which team(s)? KC will keep Escobar and either Hosmer/Moustakas I predict.
  19. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 09:05 PM) Dude chill the f*** out. He has ridiculous physical tools and the numbers in the minors to back it up. Does that mean he's going to be the player we all hope? Of course not. But writing him off after a month in the majors is beyond ridiculous. I agree about the physical tools. I can be critical but I'm convinced he'll be a star. The team blows so badly I don't know why anybody would be concerned about any individual performances. Right now is not any type of audition. The audition comes on Opening Day of whatever season we are planning on contending. Until then, who gives a f*** how any individual does? Moncada is just as huge a prospect now as he was a month ago in the minors. His physical tools make him a dynamic prospect like Rowand said.
  20. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 09:42 PM) My bad if you just simply used the wrong word. I got the impression you were under some illusion that the White Sox might actually try to compete next year. No this time I simply meant "since" it's a rebuilding year it'd be neat to have Kemp lead off all year.
  21. Awful. Sad. Terrible. Heartbreaking.
  22. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 05:48 PM) You said "if" next year is a throw away year. There's no if involved here whatsoever. Simple semantics, no need for you to freak out. I should have put "since" instead of it. My bad.
  23. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 05:06 PM) lol, why? Who cares. I just like to see how they are doing now that they escaped GRate Field and the Sox zoo so to speak. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 05:13 PM) You are more than welcome to. I said "I wish." I can wish can't I? QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 05:14 PM) This post is just great. Sums up how greg's brain works perfectly. What's wrong with wanting Kemp in a throwaway year? Throwaway means losing year. Everybody said we're gonna lose next year. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 05:33 PM) I thought about making this its own topic: cratering the bullpen is a genius method of tanking. The bullpen is not only the most easily fixed component on the next good Sox team, it's also the area you can stack losses (like last night) while some of your younger guys show out like Rodon, Leury and Delmonico did. Just more credit to Hahn really. I don't know if I'd "credit" Hahn for this. But you are right. Cratering the bullpen does assure losing. However ... he'd have gotten rid of all the starters too if anybody wanted Holland, Pelphrey or Miguel. Having no starters works too. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 05:36 PM) You just get denser every year. THE SOX WILL SUCK NEXT YEAR!!! GET OVER IT! I know. That's why I said throwaway year. What do u think throwaway year means? Why can't a guy like Kemp lead off for a year? He intrigues me. Lot of pop and minor league production for a little guy.
  24. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 05:22 PM) Yesterday: Today is the bottom of this Presidency Today: Today is the bottom of this Presidency Tomorrow: Today is the bottom of this Presidency I don't think Trump has expressed himself very well the last few days. I think Kasisch is right. He's trying to win an argument basically. He's sort of turned into the mean version of Greg on this board. "By gawd some of those people (white surpremists) are good people; by gawd I like statues. They are just statues. You can learn from history." In other words like me he has his stern opinions but doesn't always express himself correctly the first time so keeps trying to win the argument and bury himself more. He should just resign though. Stern is right. he hates being president. He made his point. Now give it to Kasisch (damn that's illegal; Pence has to take over).
  25. QUOTE (Superstar Lamar @ Aug 17, 2017 -> 06:01 PM) I would be fine if I never heard the Sox and Astros speculated as trading partners again the future. The process with them is fatiguing. Great post, Lamar. We need to see more of your posts IMO. I have been intrigued by that Kemp guy. We should make sure he's the player to be named. Throw in Miguel to make sure it's Kemp. If next year is another throwaway year I wouldn't mind seeing that Kemp guy lead off.
